NORTHSIDE
CO|HOUSE NATE HALSTEAD
11
Starting with constraints drawn from the predetermined matrix, this house leans heavily into the Co-Housing Occupancy Type with a Private Attitude towards the Street. The form of the building was derived from a simple and affordable box, undergoing several changes to better meet the constraints selected from the matrix. The distinctive roof planes created an opportunity for a dormer, which utilizes Passive Solar heating strategies. On the interior, the compact nature of the plan enables the house to benefit from a single stacked plumbing wall extending from the second floor to the utility basement.

The core of the house becomes something around which the life of the space can begin to take shape. The core, consisting of utility and ordered structure, become a rigid mass that the messiness of everyday activity and chaos shift around. These variable spaces take on different functions as needed but remain ever anchored to the logos of the house. This move allows the house to take upon a degree of variability when repeating the house to other sites, simply by varying the location of the core. This can produce different living spaces and a unique floor plan, while retaining the recognizable elements that define the house.
