THE RANCH
The matrix constraints that drove this design were ADA and Aging-inPlace. Focusing on these constraints created a ranch-style design, where everything was accessible on the first floor, which worked well with the long length of site 02. The Shed Roof, crafted from a system of uniform trusses at varying heights, was utilized to create a variety of unique interior and exterior spaces. This helped to differentiate the private areas of the house from the more open, communal areas. The Super Insulation constraint pushed the Masonry Fireplace to the exterior which helped to frame a half-enclosed, covered patio. This patio is an extension of the kitchen, connecting interior space with the backyard.

These constraints produced a house that offers a variety of captivating interior and exterior spaces. The first floor is easily accessible to anyone. The double-height space has the potential to add up to two more bedrooms and a bathroom, without altering the exterior facades, if a second floor is added above the kitchen. This means the house can also be altered to fit the other sites without losing the essence and integrity of the design. This project also provided some helpful research for the studio with the proposal of an exterior fireplace, a system of uniform trusses, and the utilization of accessible appliances.
