NEST STUDIO
THE RAIL HOUSE MICHAEL WEBB
Historic context and contemporary culture combined to drive the development of this design; contemporary culture is implemented through the popularization and necessity of co-housing amongst young adults, and the historic context of rail yards and industrial movement is represented in the layout of the plan that is meant to evoke and take cues from the limited, linear movements of rail systems. The utilization of the rails of a train track as means of denoting division of space and movement through the home were conducive to the lot itself and the context of the surrounding buildings. The simple linear organizational system allows for the segmenting of space into clear navigable, social, and private spaces. The private spaces are pushed out of the way of the more easily accessible social spaces meant for gatherings and entertaining.

Flexibility in utility, privacy, and socialization amongst a group of adults in such an intimate setting is an incredibly fragile balance that must be achieved. Navigating and creating spaces conducive to such flexibility has become more of an issue throughout the country, but it is now more of a pressing issue in the Neighborhood of northside as well due to the rise in property value and the stymieing of well-paying jobs for young adults entering the job market. The design that I have proposed allows for flexibility by designating all social, private, and navigable spaces into sections that allow for an easing of the strain that many adults may feel when inhabiting the same confined space.
