CINCINNATI-DAYTON INTL AIRPORT MICHAEL HEYN / PROFESSOR JOSS KIELY (FALL 2020)
CINCINNATI-DAYTON INTL AIRPORT (CDI) FALL 2020 / MICHAEL HEYN Sited near exit 29 on Interstate 75, the Cincinnati-Dayton International Airport is composed of two distinct features; The terminal and the “landscape “intervention, the latter having been designed in conjunction with three classmates. Central to the concept of the master plan is the Transit Hub, depicted in the following spread. By providing public transit lines at both the regional and local scale (fig. 06), guests can enter the site to visit the commercial hub and recreational facilities of the landscape, or can continue through the Transit Hub to the midfield terminal. To travel through CDI, you fulfill check-in and security functions in the Transit Hub before riding the subway line to the below-ground level of the terminal, where upon arrival, you ascend to your flight above. At the foundation of the terminal design is the concept of an architecture that reflects the motion of its inhabitants, articulated as a series of identical geometries in motion (fig. 08). Progressing from one end to the other of this series, the overlapping areas become the defining moments of the project’s form. On the main floor (fig. 10), the departure level, the most heavily overlapped areas evolve into the spaces that contain the courtyards, atriums, commerce and dining, but most importantly they are the zones of congregation, choreographed by the oculi in the “roofscape” above. Directly under the oculi are blocks containing commercial and restroom functions, with access to lounge and bar spaces at the mezzanine level above (fig. 14). Alternatively, the less overlapped areas become the points of departure, or the gates and waiting areas (fig. 11, 17).
