CASE STUDY BRIEF Working from home, learning from home, staying at home. The COVID-19 pandemic made all of us spend the biggest part of the day at home. While the way of living changes the meaning of a home also changes. Especially in our daily work, these changes will remain long after the pandemic. People will continue to work from home as well as from the office. Meaning that the requirements for a home are changing. Not only COVID, but even more the climate change and waste of resources force us to rethink the way we build. It forces us to find a way the construction of new houses will cause as little damage to the earth as possible. New buildings must reflect the awareness of this responsibility and the entire life cycle of the house must be considered. Material, programm and fabrication must positively affect the house in a sustainable way and contribute to its longevity. For us as students, the task is to design a prototype of housing for America within the framework of the >Case Study House Program 2022< which responds to the current developments of the planet and is based on an extensive research of different topics.

How the system works THE SYSTEM The basic idea for this concept is to develop a system for the Case house study 2022 house that is not exclusively related to one property. Rather, a system should be created that can react to different properties and environments. This system should also meet different requirements, such as cost effificiency or environmental friendliness. From these requirements the idea of the „Alphabet housing system“ was born. The concept is based on a catalog of modules made of CLT, coded with letters in alphabetical order. A house can be built from different modules and individualized by different compositions. Prefabricated modules of CLT are prefabricated in the factory and transported to the construction site, where the assembly can be done quickly. Due to the fact that the modules come from a catalog, they can be produced cheaper and faster.

THE DESIGN The e1F12+ House provides a home for a multigenerational family. Grandparents, Parents and two kids are living together. A small apartment inside the house is made for the Grandparents so if they don´t need it anymore it can be a seperate apartment for one of the kids or can be subleased to a differnt family. The building has the appearance of two volumes shifted to each other, opening mainly in one direction. This creates more private areas, as well as an arrival zone. With the entrance towards a quiet road the building provides a good view and a backyard towards the city. From the outside also stands out a green house, which is hidden inside the building. It offers the opportunity to let the family grow their own food and have a project to work on together. The building is entierly made of the pre fabricated CLT-Modules. They create a frame and by adding Exterior and interior walls the result is a perfect working house. The wooden modules also carry their materiality to the outside and thus the building appears entirely in wood.
