CASE STUDY BRIEF Today is characterized by two fundamental problems: COVID and climate change. But changes in society and family structures are also crucial for today’s architecture. COVID has changed the requirements for today’s housing situation. Most people spend large portions of the day in their house or apartment and do all the activities of the day such as working, cooking and leisure activities within their own four walls. Thus, a problem with privacy arises first and foremost, but lack of the space and noise pollution also play a role. A new way of thinking about the traditional spatial programming could be beneficial. Especially in recent years, the extent and fundamental problem of climate change has become the number one issue in the world. Most areas of life are affected by these impacts and problems, and, the housing industry is no different. Efforts should be made to work mainly with natural and recycled materials, as well as to build more durable buildings or to renovate more existing buildings instead of building new ones. Above all, the aspect of energy saving plays a major role here. In this context, smart home is becoming increasingly important. This means that energy and power consumption can be optimally regulated and people can live more economically.

During the design process, I determined seven points through which I would like to achieve the design goal. These points are mainly concerned with the environment and the coexistence of several generations. In order to achieve these goals, I have thought of three main elements that support the design: filter, airspace and patio. I divided the different generations of families into different parts of the building, all under one roof with common areas and retreats. The grandparents are in the front part, the family in the back. The common areas are in a connecting part. The building constellation naturally creates a patio with additional outdoor access. Depending on the space requirements, the different parts have a different number of floors. The house is made of rammed earth as well as wooden elements. In conclusion, the overriding message of my design is: apart but still together.
