Milling in the City

Milling in the City is an urban lumber mill designed as a part of the “Up There” architecture studio taught by Sergi Serrat. Our project involved bringing lumber production and the production of wood products back to the urban center of Cincinnati and bridge the gap between the districts of The Banks and the downtown financial district. Our building’s design was driven by the idea of utilizing a building infrastructure of open columns and beams to allow for maximum efficiency and moduality, along with the idea of using natural ventilation and passive cooling techniques during the industrial lumber process. A program of mixed-use is utilized throughout the project with a range of programmatic elements from the industrial factory to residences, along with commercial and civic elements along our ground floor including restaurants, stores and public workshops. Overall this project is meant to revitalize the urban core of cincinnati by bringing back the industry that the downtown area once had and create a more livable and pedestrian friendly area.
