HISTORIC AND CONTEMPORARY LOCK AND DAM SITES -LOCK 31Lock 31 is a privately preserved site along the Ohio. My design approach involved providing balance and newuse to the site while preserving the existing infastructure. My final program resulted in a self-sufficient learning center with complimentary riverwalk and walking trails to provide recreation, education, and gathering space. With post-analysis and evaluation, the biggest challenge for a lot of these lock and dam sites will be navigating the floodplain and making a design impactful enough to attract constant attendence by the user year-round. ↑ Existing Site Plan: Each lock and dam site encompassed a number of dwellings or buildings to facilitate the operation of the lock and dam. Lock 31 was well preserved and thus you can still see most of the ‘campus’ structure these sites originally had.

↑ Site analysis of the existing site focuses on the grid, axiel balance of the infastructure, and access points on the property. The resulting masterplan involves adjusting the grid and axis to give a more balanced site design.
