Project Overview
We will plan and design a new urban cemetery in Cincinnati’s Pendleton neighborhood by proposing visionary organizational models for a cemetery of the future. Our proposal is to incorporate art with the ashes of our loved ones. The goal would be to make death feel not as isolating when someone precious to them dies by having something physical to wear or put in their homes to make a person feel like their beloved is still with them. Death is a scary reality everyone in life will face at one point, so we want to make it seem less scary by putting the ashes into an art form whether that be a painting, jewelry, or a sculpture. Death will be a peaceful thought. Through this, our design will be an art museum accompanied by artist sutdios and other supporting spaces.

THE PROCESS
Jewelry
Carbon is extracted from the ashes and then purified. The carbon is then put under pressure and heat for six to twelve months to form a diamond. This can be placed into a piece of jewelry of your choosing.
Painting
Ashes of the deceased is mixed with any kind of paint in order to make a painting.

Sculpture
Lines are formed with the ash and then mixed with the chosen material to form a sculpture.

CHOOSE YOUR PIECE
Jewelry
The options for jewelry are making a diamond from the carbon in the ashes and setting that into a piece of your choosing or mixing the ash with a medium to then set into the piece. This can be the designer’s choice or the deceased’s choice of what to make such as a bracelet, ring, watch, etc.
Painting
Sculpture
The options for painting are using acrylic or oil paint and mixing ash with the medium to create a beautiful painting. This can be a family tree, the painter’s choice, or the deceased’s choice of what to paint. This can also include choosing a single stroke, single color, the entire painting, and so on. The single stroke and color can be added on to for generations.
The options for sculpture are making a piece out of clay, stone, or glass. This would include mixing the ashes with the mediums to create a sculpture of the designer’s choice or the deceased’s choice.

When she came to the US, Aleksandra was introduced to metal as a medium and it was with metal that she found her passion. Her favorite techniques are carving, casting, riveting, oxidizing, etching, and metal smithing. The variety of techniques allow her to combine silver and gold with different materials, such as coral, pearls, textile, and lava, bringing an endless source of inspiration.
Fine ribbons of silver or gold are shaped by hand according to that design, and placed on fine silver. The compartments thus formed are filled with thin layers of vitreous enamel glass ground into powders in vibrant colors. The application and firing of many thin layers of enamel permits the subtle blending of colors and creates great clarity in the enamel.
Yen’s work is an exploration of sculpture form in jewelry by using geometric shapes and architectural structures. His inspiration comes from the structure of nature, plants, rocks and minerals, landscape, and architecture. + Or provide your own artist

CHOOSE YOUR ARTIST - PAINTING
David Hockney
Hockney stands out for his ultramodern techniques and his bright colored palette. His art dealer, John Kasmin, describes him as an insolent artist, a great observer with incredible technical mastery of space, volume, and light, combined with an obvious pleasure for narrative.
Anselm Keifer
Anselm wishes to express German renewal in his works where he mixes painting, photography, books, and sculptures. Fascinated by Judaism, throughout his career, he explores the theme of Kabbalah, his work is thus part of an existential work of memory and a spiritual quest made up of great myths.
Gerhard Richter
Gerhard achieved international recognition in the 1960s with his photo paintings. He rendered photographs into paintings, varying in the subject matter. Landscapes, still life painting, daily life, airplanes, alpines, and more, were painted with a haze hovering over the photo-realistic image, creating a blurred effect.

Leiko uses bronze, terracotta, and clay, with which she creates homomorphic forms and fragments of female subjects. Her works always consist of a certain ambiguity and impalpability. The mysterious character of her works is the result of her ongoing interest in Japanese mythology, depicting different states of transformation.
Fischli & Weiss
Fischli & Weiss question the mechanisms of artistic authorship, the symbolic value of a work of art, and the role of the spectator. In their sculptures, we are challenged to rediscover reality. They focus on the seemingly banal.
Kiki depicts and interrogates the contemporary human condition. She is interested in our evolving relationship with nature but also takes on sociopolitically motivating topics such as AIDS and gender politics.
