Mission Statement Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers. The Arden draws from any source that is inherently dramatic and theatrical: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, music and drama. Arden Theatre Company stages works for the diverse greater Philadelphia community that arouse, provoke, illuminate and inspire.

Our Vision for the Future The Arden will be recognized as one of Philadelphia’s great cultural treasures and one of the leading regional theatres in the country. We will draw from the best actors, designers, artisans and arts administrators available nationally while remaining committed to homegrown artists. The Arden will be known as an important incubator for the creation of new work – plays and musicals that premiere at the Arden will be presented worldwide. Playwrights will seek to make the Arden their artistic home. Young people will be inspired, empowered and develop a lifelong love of the arts when they experience the energy of Arden Children’s Theatre and participate in Arden classes. Graduates of the Arden Professional Apprentice Program will shape the future of American theatre – here in Philadelphia and elsewhere. Our audiences will see themselves and their humanity in the stories we tell and classes we teach and have a lifelong relationship with this theatre. The Arden will be a source of civic pride, the theatre that Philadelphians point to as their hometown theatre.

Artistic Achievements

“Back to school,” says one of the characters in the opening monologue of Alan Bennett’s Tony Award-winning The History Boys, and that’s exactly where we went to start our 23rd season of great stories by great storytellers. In an inspired bit of local casting, Shakespearean actor Frank X made his Arden debut in the role of Hector, a teacher of “studied eccentricity” at an English private school. Joining him was a host of exciting young actors, several of whom were making their professional debuts. Dazzlingly staged by Terrence J. Nolen, and featuring a brilliant collage of 1980s pop songs, courtesy of Jorge Cousineau, the production turned out to be a tantalizing precursor of another Nolen/Cousineau event still to come. David Lindsay-Abaire’s Pulitzer Prize winner Rabbit Hole brought Grace Gonglewski back to the Arden for her 19th role with our company. As the grief-stricken Becca, she moved audiences to tears night after night. Her director was James J. Christy, another much lauded Philadelphia artist and frequent Arden collaborator. Both Christy and Gonglewski received Barrymore nominations for their work on the production, and both will return for the 2010/11 season. The first Arden Children’s Theatre production of the season was a new adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan by Douglas Irvine that had only been staged once before

at the Tony Award-winning Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis. Highlights of the production included a bilingual Tinkerbell played by Vietnamese-American actress Bi Jean Ngo, Lost Boys puppets made from everyday objects by local troupe Puppet Uprising, and an extraordinary steampunk set designed by Tom Gleeson. Gleeson is the recipient of a Princess Grace Award, which funded his return to the Arden for The Threepenny Opera. After directing 2008’s The Piano Lesson, Walter Dallas returned to the Arden to direct Blue Door, Tanya Barfield’s stirring examination of race and assimilation. Philadelphia favorite Johnnie Hobbs, Jr. made his Arden debut in a hypnotic, tour-de-force performance; he did not leave the stage once during the play’s 90-minute running time. The production featured original music by sound designer Robert Kaplowitz, a recent Philadelphia transplant and Tony Award winner for his sound design of the Broadway musical Fela! Kaplowitz, Dallas, and supporting actor Kes Khemnu were Barrymore nominees for their work in this moving production. Following closely on the heels of this intimate two-man play was a vigorous Romeo and Juliet with a cast of 12, including Arden regulars Scott Greer, Tony Lawton, Suzanne O’Donnell, and Brian Anthony Wilson. Mahira Kakkar, star of the Off Broadway production of Opus, played the eponymous star-crossed lovers. Local award-winning director Matt Pfeiffer, whose credits range from Mamet to children’s theatre, tackled Shakespeare for the first time in his career. Whit MacLaughlin returned to direct If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, his ninth Arden Children’s Theatre production. This hilarious show featured star turns from local actors Steve Pacek and David Raphaely as Mouse and Boy, a Laurel and Hardy-like odd couple whose escalating antics harkened back to the golden age of slapstick. The production received three Barrymore Award nominations, and garnered a win for Outstanding Set Design, a strong reminder that Arden Children’s Theatre shows are produced with as much care and creativity as the more “grown up” productions in our community. The 2009/10 season closed with what is sure to be remembered as a signature

production of Sunday in the Park with George. Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics and score and James Lapine’s book were brilliantly brought to life by co-conceivers Terrence J. Nolen and Jorge Cousineau, working alongside a tremendous cast and crew including stars Jeffrey Coon and Kristine Fraelich and Musical Director Eric Ebbenga, who led an 11-piece orchestra using the full original orchestrations from the 1984 Broadway production. The Arden’s Sunday was a feast for the eyes and ears and garnered Stephen Sondheim’s blessings, “I was delighted to hear that the production will use Michael Starobin’s brilliant original orchestrations. At a time when so many larger organizations are producing reduced forms of shows like mine… it is heartening to know that the Arden exists.” The attendance records and rave reviews from local and national critics were a testament to Sondheim’s faith in our abilities. But most inspiring were our audiences, who forged deep connections with this challenging, powerful, and groundbreaking American musical.

Community and Educational Outreach

The cornerstone of the Arden’s educational outreach work is our theatre access program, Arden for All, which ensures that students from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods have access to award-winning live theatre and essential arts education curriculum. First piloted in two classrooms in 2005, this season, the program served four schools in Philadelphia, two schools in Ridley Park and three schools in Camden, New Jersey, giving away over 5,000 free tickets and books. Show-related lesson plans meet local, state and national academic standards, and all lessons are taught by professional actors with teaching experience. During the 2009/10 season, over 2,200 students experienced of in-class lessons taught by Arden Teaching Artists. This season we also continued our partnership with the drama students at Camden Creative Arts High School. The students attended five productions and participated in master classes led by Grace Gonglewski (Rabbit Hole), Glenn Perlman (Peter Pan), Johnnie Hobbs, Jr. (Blue Door), Evan Jonigkeit (Romeo & Juliet), and Steve Pacek (If You Give a Mouse a Cookie).

Arden Professional Apprentices

2009/10 was an extremely successful season for Arden Drama School, our theatre classes for students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. 1,085 students attended Arden Drama School, an increase of 44% from last year, and Arden Drama School’s Play in a Day was the winner of Philadelphia Magazine’s “Best Kids Class” in 2010. Thanks to a generous four-year grant from the Wallace Foundation, Arden Drama School is continuing to endeavor to serve as a bridge between Children’s Theatre and Mainstage productions by engaging kids in the performing arts through their tween and teen years. The Arden Professional Apprentice (APA) program continues to attract applicants from across the country. During the 2009/10 season, we received over 100 applications from 27 different states and 80 different colleges and universities. APA Class 17 graduated 5 aspiring theatre professionals from Illinois, California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Texas. The Pay-What-You-Can program continues to raise funds for area non-profits through open dress rehearsals of our Mainstage shows. This year’s beneficiaries were

Arden Drama School Summer Camp

Art-Reach, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, New Freedom Theatre, Outward Bound, and Fleisher Art Memorial. In total, nearly $8,000 was raised for fellow non-profits in the community. Making the Arden’s work accessible to all individuals remains integral to our mission. Select Mainstage performances are audio described for blind and low vision patrons and open captioned for deaf and hard of hearing audiences. Arden Children’s Theatre partners with Hands Up Productions to provide ASL shadow interpreted performances. For our work with Hands Up Productions, we were named a 2009 Cultural Access Honoree by Art-Reach, the only organization in the Philadelphia region solely devoted to bringing arts and cultural opportunities to the full range of underserved audiences. New Play Development In 2009/10, the Arden continued its dedication to the development of new work and furthering meaningful artistic relationships with writers. Through the generous support of the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase, we conducted developmental work on a number of plays, including three in preparation for full production in our 2010/11 season. Last season saw the arrival of the Arden’s new Associate Artistic Director, Edward Sobel, who joined the Arden after almost a decade of leading new play efforts at Chicago’s renowned Steppenwolf Theater Company. In October, playwright Rogelio Martinez also came to town to work on his commissioned play Symbiotic Love and for a rehearsed reading of another commissioned play, Wanamaker’s Pursuit, which will receive its premiere at the Arden under the direction of Terrence J. Nolen in April 2011, as part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA), inspired by the Kimmel Center. In January, we held a workshop of The Flea and the Professor. Adapted by award-winning playwright Jordan Harrison from Hans Christian Andersen’s last story and with music by Richard Gray, Flea is our first commission for Arden Children’s Theatre. In May, a rehearsed reading of the play was presented in Washington, DC as part of the Kennedy Center’s New Visions/New Voices, a biennial national festival for plays-inprogress written for young audiences. The three-day national conference of theater professionals, educators, and publishers received Flea with great enthusiasm. We will be producing the world premiere in May/June of 2011, under the direction of Obie-Award winner Anne Kauffman. Michael Hollinger, author of Opus, An Empty Plate in the Café du Grand Boeuf, and Red Herring, among others, delivered a new script entitled Ghost-Writer. It was developed through an innovative partnership with local play development organization PlayPenn, who jointly sponsored an extended workshop in June and July. The Arden opened its 2010/11 season with the world premiere in September. Michael Hollinger’s Opus, which was first produced at the Arden in 2005/06, was one of the ten most produced plays in the country in 2009/10. Looking to the future, the Arden initiated a new commission from Chicago based writer, Laura Jacqmin. A graduate of Yale and the winner of the Wasserstein Prize, awarded to an outstanding female playwright under age 30, Laura has had work produced at Chicago Dramatists, Steppenwolf, and Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater in New York. Connecting with Audiences in New Media In the 2009/10 season, we implemented increased social media campaigns via our social network properties such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. Through these channels, we featured contests, participatory questions, and more consistent posting of photos and videos. Facebook and Twitter both saw large increases in followers and participation in 2009/10, with a 250% increase in Facebook fans and a 501% increase in Twitter followers. We posted on both sites daily, often multiple times per day on Twitter, and responded to each comment made by one of our followers. We used both outlets to promote our blog posts, press mentions about the company, and casual insider information from around the Arden’s building. All posts sought to be relevant and timely, and we experimented—with much success—with asking questions of our audience.

In the 2009/10 season, the Arden website received 20,000 – 30,000 visits per month. The site was reorganized so that it deepened visitors’ engagement with a “Get Familiar” page for each show which included information about the cast and crew as well as photos. We substantially increased the number of blog posts on our website, averaging 10-12 per month, resulting in 5001,000 visitors to the homepage of the blog each month and hundreds more reading individual posts after having been directed from Facebook and Twitter. We continue to use Google Analytics to track the success of the blog and popularity of individual posts, writers, and multimedia and we will continue to integrate the blog on our website to drive traffic, thereby engaging our audiences further with behind-the-scenes content.

Granfalloon 2010 This year’s Granfalloon was held at the Comcast Center on June 11, 2010. The event honored N. Peter Hamilton, longtime Arden board member and avid supporter of Arden Children’s Theatre and Arden for All. Sponsors and members of the Host Committee gathered in Ralph’s Café, on the 43rd floor to enjoy cocktails, small plate dining and an exquisite view of the city of Philadelphia. The party continued in the Winter Garden Lobby of the Comcast Center, with a silent auction, dessert and dancing to LeRoy Hawkes and the Hipnotics. Special guest artists included Joilet Harris, Alex Keiper, and Steve Pacek. With over 250 guests and grossing $185,000, Granfalloon 2010 proved to be the most successful fundraising event in Arden history.

The Hamilton Family Foundation Challenge This season, the Hamilton Family Foundation presented us with a unique challenge: raise $50,000 in new or increased donations, and the foundation will grant an additional $50,000 in support of Arden Children’s Theatre and Arden for All. By the end of the 2009/10 season, we met and surpassed the challenge, raising $146,508 in new and increased contributions. We acquired 442 new individual donors, and a pitch made to the audiences of Sunday in the Park with George by Jeff Coon (George) brought in over $40,000.
