Applause, please, for our Media Partners:
WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director Welcome. When we first moved to this building in 1995, our motto was “Home is where the art is.” And this home has been very good to us. Over the past 15 years, we have produced more than a hundred productions and over a million people (including hundreds of thousands of kids) have passed through these doors – so a little sprucing up was in order.
Terrence J. Nolen
This past summer we’ve renovated our lobby and backstage spaces. These improvements were made possible through Fund for the Future, a fundraising campaign we launched several years ago to ensure that we had the necessary resources to invest in the upkeep of this building, and to further our artistic work. Under the auspices of this fund, we have made significant improvements including installing new heating and air conditioning systems, replacing the roof, and upgrading our lighting and sound equipment to better serve our theatres. Much of this work is not evident to the public eye, but it ensures that this building will continue to serve our artists and audiences for years to come. Our thanks to all of our supporters who invested in the Arden’s future, and a special thank you to the William Penn Foundation for making this summer’s renovations possible. Home plays a prominent role in many of the plays that we are producing this season. The Whipping Man takes place in an old plantation house at the very end of the Civil War. Clybourne Park is set in a house first made famous by Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun. And in Charlotte’s Web, we have the Zuckerman barn. Each of these homes carries a history – the imprint of lives lived. Tonight we enter the Weston family homestead in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Like all homes, it is a place filled with so many memories. The Arden’s mission is to tell great stories by great storytellers, and Tracy Letts is undoubtedly one of the greatest storytellers writing for the stage today. Last season we produced Tracy Letts’ Superior Donuts, and I am thrilled to follow that with this production of August: Osage County. A movie will soon be made of this play and I hope it’s great, but I will miss the extraordinary connection that Tracy can foster between an audience and a group of actors. Some stories are best shared live. Welcome to the Weston family home – and to ours.
Terry P.S. The Arden Board of Directors recently adopted a new strategic plan, charting our course for the coming years. We extend our deepest thanks to Board Member Joy De Jesús for her leadership of this effort. If you’d like to peruse this document, a copy is available via our website at ardentheatre.org/about/

This ensemble of actors has collaborated on an on-going basis at theatres across the region. Through their work, they have developed a shared history and deep trust that we have been lucky to draw from when casting the Weston family. Below, we’ve highlighted some of these past connections.

DIRECTOR’S Notes August: Osage County was originally written for and first produced by Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. When I was a student at Northwestern University back in the 1980’s, I went to see shows at Steppenwolf, then a small 200 seat storefront theatre. Steppenwolf was a Chicago sensation, just beginning to make its mark on the national scene, and a revelation for an aspiring director. Steppenwolf was founded by a group of actors who created an acting ensemble that was at the core of that theatre’s artistic life. And what an ensemble it was, including such extraordinary actors as John Malkovich, Gary Sinise, and Joan Allen. Accordingly, Steppenwolf’s productions were famously hard-hitting and actor-driven, excelling with American plays by such writers as Sam Shepard and Lanford Wilson. Even their less successful productions were marked by moments of terrific acting. I remember a production of You Can’t Take it With You with John Mahoney, Laurie Metcalf and Amy Morton (ensemble members all). Renowned for their gritty naturalistic acting style, Kaufman and Hart was not your typical Steppenwolf fare, but John Mahoney was absolutely remarkable as Grandpa Vanderhof and twenty-five years later I can still remember his performance. When Amy, Aaron and I founded the Arden, we made a commitment to casting Philadelphia actors. Having seen what was possible when a group of artists developed a shared way of working, sprung from years of collaboration, we wanted to create a theatre that would be a home for Philadelphia-based artists. And so, we began to build our own ensemble. In the two decades since then, the Philadelphia theatre community has flourished. Philadelphia is now home to many ensemble-based theatres, such as Pig Iron Theatre Company, EgoPo and The Berserker Residents. As a result, more artists have chosen to put down roots here. Actors who graduate from our universities are staying, and others moving here from other cities – Philadelphia is the place to be. We are fortunate that we can draw upon the great ensemble of actors who make their lives and their art in this city. These actors have worked together at different theatres in numerous productions over many years. They share a history, a common language, a trust, and they are one of this region’s true artistic treasures. Tracy Letts is both a playwright and an actor, so this play was borne of a deep and abiding commitment to the power and potential of an acting ensemble. This production is in part a celebration of the Philadelphia acting company that enriches so many of our region’s stages.

Ribbon cutting to open the newly rennovated lobby (l-r): Producing Artistic Director Terrence J. Nolen, Committee Co-chair Lee van de Velde, Managing Director Amy L. Murphy, Senior Project Manager Paul Horning, Architect Richard Maimon, Facilities Committee Chair Hether Smith, Facilities Committee Members Paul Thais and Chris van de Velde, Director of Institutional Advancement Jessica Calter.
Fund for the Future was developed to help the Arden “secure the facility” and “grow the art.” This campaign, co-chaired by Lee van de Velde and Peter Hamilton, has allowed us to invest significant resources into making this building a better place for our artists and you, our audiences. Over the last few years, our Facilities Committee chaired by H. Hetherington Smith has guided the completion of several behind-the-scenes projects including upgrades to our electrical equipment, new HVAC, and the replacement of the roof (thanks in large part to Peter and Alta Hamilton). During the summer of 2011, working with KieranTimberlake principal architect and Arden Board member Richard Maimon, we renovated the lobby, restrooms, green room and dressing rooms. This Fall we celebrated the completion of these renovations and our Fund for the Future campaign to secure the facility. We hope you enjoy the newly refreshed Arden and we are so grateful to all of the supporters who made this beautiful transformation possible!

Why I Support the Arden‌. The plays we have seen at the Arden have given us the opportunity to share in common our perceptions and have led to spirited discussions as a family. - Saifuddin and Robin Mama
We thoroughly appreciate the excellent performances and also the focused attention that Arden brings to the development of new plays. In addition, we are aware that the Arden strives to encourage new talent through its apprentice program and annually introduces theatre to more than 5,000 underserved students in the Philadelphia and Camden areas. - Eric and Winnie Lien
Whether it’s bringing a favorite book to life with a bunch of dogs on roller skates or a family of brave children living in a boxcar; the magical puppetry of a big, friendly giant; or, of course, the transportive properties of a Giant Peach or pixie dust, our kids know that the Arden will leave them entertained and enthralled. - Mike Salmanson and Tobi Zemsky I am grateful to be able to contribute to this wonderful, magical place where I can believe the unbelievable and be transported deep inside myself through the story unfolding on the stage. - Bethany Asplundh

The American Family Arden Associate Artistic Director Edward Sobel commisssioned August: Osage County and was the dramaturg for the original production at Steppenwolf Theatre Company and subsequent Broadway run. We asked Ed to share a few thoughts about the play. “Home is the place where when you have to go there, they have to take you in.” – Robert Frost, The Death of a Hired Man It’s hard to find a play that isn’t in some way about family. The great tragedies of ancient Greece (think Sophocles’ Oedipus or Antigone) while pursuing ideas of political power, responsibility, and free will have as their principal advocates members of the same family. (Oedipus murders his father and sleeps with his mother. Antigone rebels against Kreon, her uncle, because she wishes to properly bury her brother.) The mighty Shakespeare’s discourses on the ability to take meaningful action (Hamlet) or the vicissitudes of inherited power (Henry IV) look at humanist and existential questions as they play out within family dynamics. (Hamlet seeks to avenge the murder of his father by his uncle. Young Hal navigates his difficult relationship with his own father, and tests a surrogate in Falstaff.) The American dramatic tradition is equally, if not more tightly bound to the familial – even plays thought to be primarily of social significance and commentary (Death of a Salesman, A Raisin in the Sun) revolve around contests between parents and children or husbands and wives. With August: Osage County, Tracy Letts draws upon his own family lore, amplifying these stories with an artist’s delight in extreme behavior and moral ambiguity. But while outrage and outrageousness permeate the play, one should not be so distracted by the emotional fireworks as to lose track of the social critique. It is not just the pathology of the American family about which Tracy is concerned, but the American family. The play begins with the interrogation of a Native American woman who agrees to take on the job of caring for this family, descendents of those who have invaded her homeland and destroyed her people. What follows is not only an investigation into familial betrayals and rivalries, but the diagnosis of dysfunction for an entire class of people. With its large cast of characters and form (a three-act structure) Tracy is not only referencing theatrical days of yore, but also demanding a canvas large enough for individual relationships to take on metaphorical significance and sweep. In one of our earliest conversations about the script, Tracy told me that the play was partly about what happens when “men abandon the field”. Certainly the male characters in the play abrogate responsibility for themselves and others in ways both hilarious and damning. We leave it to you to determine whether the women follow suit. Sweltering around the arguments, not to mention outright fisticuffs, of the play is the sticky truth that no matter what the members of this family do, they can not extract themselves from their familial history or the family fabric. Their original sin, as with O’Neill’s great tragic families in Long Days Journey Into Night or Desire Under the Elms, is simply being born. Their continued afflictions – addiction, greed, self-interest, moral confusion – are inherited as surely as the mythic American values – the right to happiness, self-determination, ambition, capitalism – of which they are extensions or complements. Family. We all have one. Some may even have one that looks like the Westons. We all have a country. Even one that looks like America.
