WELCOME from the producing artistic director
This is a very busy building. For every play we do, we rehearse and build sets and make costumes. When it’s a new play, it takes even more work – we often do readings of the script so the writer can hear their words read by actors. In addition to the shows we put up, we also have classes and camps and workshops for kids. We’ve been running out of space. Well, we have some exciting news. We are growing.
Terrence J. Nolen
The Arden recently bought a new building right here on this block, and we are going to fix it up and make it our new education center. The new building will have classrooms of all sizes and a big rehearsal room and a small theatre so kids can see what it’s like to act (or sing or dance or play) in front of an audience. This will be a place for kids. When we started Arden Children’s Theatre, we believed that you deserve the very best we have to offer. Our best actors and designers and everything! This new building will be the best, too. We will have a special classroom for kids interested in art (where you can make masks and paint and design costumes or sets), a rehearsal hall for singing and dancing, and a comfortable lobby for you and your parents to hang out. We’ll have after-school programming for teenagers where they can make their own shows, and we’ll do plays for toddlers – allowing us to show our very youngest audiences how exciting live theatre can be. The building will be called the Hamilton Family Arts Center. We like this name because it recognizes the generous support of the Hamilton family AND because the building will be a family arts center. We like to say that this new building is about the future. That means the Hamilton Family Arts Center is for you. But today, we welcome you to Sherwood Forest. It’s amazing how forests appear in so many stories – like the Enchanted Forest in the Brothers Grimm’s fairy tales or the Forbidden Forest in Harry Potter. In fact, the name of this theatre comes from the Forest of Arden in William Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Forests are magical places where danger might lurk in the shadows, but so does adventure. They are places filled with possibility – where anything can happen. The theatre is also a place where anything can happen. Welcome to our woods.

DIRECTOR’S notes
Matthew Decker
When I think of a hero, a lot of people come to mind. Some are from books and movies like Harry Potter, Batman or Katniss Everdeen. Some heroes walk the streets among us, like firemen, soldiers and world leaders. Some are heroes only through my eyes, like my parents and my friends. However, all of these heroes have one thing in common - they reach above the call of duty to help others.
Robin Hood is a hero. In fighting against Prince John and the Sheriff, Robin makes life better for the people of Nottingham by standing up for what he believes is wrong. Have you ever had to stand up for something that you think is wrong? It can be a very hard thing to do, and takes a lot of courage, but it is important to fight for what you think is right. I think the best kind of world to live in is one where we stick by what we believe in, just like Robin. The legend of Robin Hood has been around for a long time. There have been many interpretations of his adventures dating back to hundreds of years ago. You may know of a movie or a book that tells a version of Robin’s story. In creating this production, we got to make our very own version of the legend that’s just for you, our audience. Thanks for coming.
