WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director Welcome to the Arden.
Terrence J. Nolen
This year we are celebrating the Arden’s 25th birthday. We are also celebrating 15 years of Arden Children’s Theatre. We started doing plays for kids in 1998, when many of you probably weren’t even born yet. Since then, over half a million kids and their families have seen an Arden Children’s Theatre production. That’s a lot of people. And a lot of Arden Children’s Theatre posters (you’ll get your Cinderella poster after the show). Great actors, writers, and designers make these plays for you. Many of the best theatre people in this city have been a part of Arden Children’s Theatre. Do you remember The Professor from The Flea and the Professor? Well that actor, Rob McClure, is now starring on Broadway as Charlie Chaplin in the musical Chaplin, but you saw him here first. We’re also writing new plays that we will do in the future. Right now we’re working on a new play based on the story Hans Brinker, or the Silver Skates. We’re going to keep making the best plays we can just for you. The Arden is also getting bigger. After the show, walk out the front door of the Arden. Turn left. Three doors down is our new building that will be called the Hamilton Family Arts Center. It will be a place for you - a place where you can take a class or go to camp or hang out after school. It will also be a place where you can make your own plays. We’ve been working with our architect whose job is to design what the building will look like. We then started working with a construction company; their job is to build the building: everything from putting in sinks and toilets to building a big new staircase to making sure that all the lights work. I’m happy to say that construction has begun, and we will open the Arden’s new Hamilton Family Arts Center this spring! Here is a picture of some of the people who are working to build our new building. They work at a construction company called C.H. Schwertner & Son, Inc.
And here are some pictures of the work that they are doing in the basement. When the building is finished, it will be clean and everything will be painted, so I thought it’d be cool for you to see what it looks like as it’s being built.
As you can tell, there are so many people who work at the Arden to make sure that the plays and classes that we do for kids are as great as they can be. Writers. Actors. Construction workers. And think of all the amazing kids who have watched a play or taken a class over the past 15 years. Some of the kids who saw our first Arden Children’s Theatre plays are now grown up. Hopefully some day they’ll bring their kids to see our shows. We plan on being here for a long time. Thank you for coming to see Cinderella. I hope you like it.
Hey Moms and Dads and Teachers, We made a video about the day we told everyone about our new building. Lots of people, including Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, came to see what we were going to do. Hold your phone’s QR scanner over this link and you can watch the video now!
DIRECTOR’S Notes I’m thinking about shoes. Well, in this case, shoes and slippers. “I like Cinderella, I really do. She has a good work ethic. I appreciate a good, hard-working gal. And she likes shoes. The fairy tale is all about the shoe at the end, and I’m a big shoe girl.”—Amy Adams
Whit MacLaughlin
Cinderella stories are everywhere. It’s a worldwide archetype – always has been. There are literally thousands of retellings - almost every culture and every era has its own version.
And almost all of them involve shoes. Shoes that reveal true identity. Shoes that separate lies from truth. Shoes that signal a transition out of childhood. “Because the human history is the history of shoes. The history of places where we ever tread and stand.” —Stebby Julionatan Cinderella is essentially the same the world over even if her name varies. In China, for instance, a long while ago, they called her Ye Xian. Her dead mother was reincarnated as a fish that was caught and eaten by the stepmother. Ye Xian retrieved the bones of this fish - they had magical properties. They helped her journey to a festival and there her fortunes changed. In a Zuni Indian version, she was called the Turkey Girl. The story ended unhappily when the girl forgot her promise and didn’t return to her flock of birds. Then there have been Egyptian, Vietnamese, German, Australian, Hungarian versions, and, well, there was one that came from the Mi’kmaq Indian tribe of Nova Scotia. But almost all end with feet and well-fitting shoes. “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what you know. And you are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”—Dr. Seuss A friend of mine was trying to explain the effect of shoes. “If you’re feeling grungy,” she explained, “put on a smart pair of shoes. You’ll immediately feel better.” I’ve observed that an actor finding the right pair of shoes can mark a big breakthrough in the creation of a role. And we all know that to know someone, just walk a mile in their shoes. In the end, Cinderella puts on shoes that fit her perfectly. They are shoes that fit no one else. This is clear to everyone in the story. And perfectly, unhappily clear to Cinderella’s step-sisters. So, shoes are important. It’s no small matter that the Prince knows how to put the best shoe on the best foot. We hope you enjoy this dusting off and re-polishing of a very familiar story. Hopefully, it will wear well with you as you trod a path to your own rich and fulfilling future.

ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS “I’m not really a bird, it’s just so much easier to get around as a bird. It’s a – a disguise. Everyone has one.” – Fairy Godmother A disguise is when you dress up like something else. Pretending to be another person, animal or creature! In this story there are many disguises. The Prince disguises himself as an ordinary boy; the Fairy Godmother disguises herself as a bird. If you could disguise yourself as something, what would you pick? Something that could fly? Or live underwater? Or hides you in the jungle? Draw a picture of a disguise you would like to wear. (Here is a drawing of the Fairy Godmother’s disguise that our Costume Designer made for the play!)
ARDEN DRAMA SCHOOL Do you like dressing in disguises, creating stories and using your imagination? You can do that and more at an Arden Drama School Class. Take an acting class with teachers like Kala Moses Baxter - who plays the Fairy Godmother and Alex Keiper - who plays Constanze! Arden Drama School classes are listed on the back of poster you’ll get after the show, or online at ardendramaschool.com.
ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS Who was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart? Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a musician and composer. He was born in Salzburg, Austria. His father was also a violinist and composer. Wolfgang composed his first piece of music at age five; could play both the violin and piano at age six; had his first piece of music published when he was seven; and he wrote his first opera when he was twelve! He would travel all over Europe performing for many, including royalty. Mozart could write the notes or play a piece of music after hearing it just once. He did this from memory; he did not need to see the actual sheet music. During his lifetime, he composed chamber music, symphonies, operas, and concertos.
You can learn to read music too! When reading music there are two clef staffs – the treble clef
and the bass clef.
The following notes are on the treble cleff and are on the lines. From left to right are named

COMING THIS SPRING:
Arden Children’s Theatre Sponsor
At the Arden, one of our favorite things to do each year is find stories to tell on our stage for kids just like you. Sometimes we choose our favorite books to put on stage – like Charlotte’s Web and If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. Sometimes we imagine new ways to tell classic stories that we all know – like Peter Pan and Robin Hood. And sometimes we write brand new plays – like The Flea and the Professor – and you get to be the very first audience to see it! This spring we’re going to tell a story that you may already know—and that we like a lot— called Pinocchio. Pinocchio is about a puppet that was carved out of a stick of wood by his papa, Gepetto. Even though he is a magic puppet that can walk and talk, Pinocchio wants nothing more than to be a real, live boy. Unfortunately, Pinocchio constantly finds himself in A LOT of trouble that keeps him from becoming a real boy. He trades his schoolbooks for money to go and see a show. He skips school to go to an amusement park. And he NEVER listens to his papa Gepetto, or to his friends the Cricket and the Blue Fairy, who try to help him when he gets into trouble. But when Gepetto is swallowed by a giant whale, it’s up to Pinocchio to save him and prove to everyone that he has what it takes to be a real, live boy. Pinocchio starts performances next spring, but we’ve already started imagining what the play will be like. We’ve asked some of our favorite actors to play Pinocchio, Gepetto, the Cricket and the Blue Fairy. We’re also brainstorming what the set and costumes will look like AND we’re wondering how we’re going to make a giant whale appear on stage. How would you do it? Be sure to check out Pinocchio when it starts performances next April. We can’t wait for you to see it!
