A Little Night Music marks the Arden’s 150th production — quite a milestone to cap off our 25th anniversary season. Since our inception in 1988, we’ve brought to life stories by such extraordinary writers as Beckett, Dickens, Dostoevsky, Graham, Hansberry, Hollinger, Letts, Miller, Ogborn, O’Neill, Potok, Shakespeare, Shaw, Sondheim, Stoppard,Vonnegut, and Wilson. This journey started at the Walnut Street Theatre Studio, moved to St. Stephen’s Alley, and continues here in Old City.

People have shared that the first play they ever saw was coming here as a student with a school group; and thousands of kids have grown up coming to Arden Children’s Theatre.

In starting the Arden, we knew we wanted to create a home for artists, believing in the profound value of ongoing artistic relationships. What we hadn’t anticipated is how strong and vital our relationship would be with you, our audience. The ongoing conversation that exists between our artists and audiences — in so many cases, a conversation that has been going on for many years — is perhaps this theatre’s greatest achievement.

As we celebrate the Arden’s past, we also look to the future. For the last three years, we have been planning, designing and building the Hamilton Family Arts Center — a dramatic expansion that will provide new classrooms, an 80-seat studio theatre, a rehearsal hall, and a craft studio for our designers and technicians. We will be able to reach more kids, expand our programming (a cabaret series; a new play reading series), and provide a first class work space for our actors and artisans.

Over the past few years we have been raising the funds to make this project a reality. My thanks to those who have generously supported this campaign, helping us raise nearly $5.3 million towards a $5.8 million goal. Now we need your help. As we put the finishing touches on the building this summer, we want to complete the capital campaign to pay for it.

THE ARDEN’S ExPANSION

The Hamilton Family Arts Center is a dramatic expansion of space to better serve our audiences, students, artists, and artisans. Located just north of the Arden at 62 N. 2nd Street, this 22,000 square foot building is currently under construction. This new space will be a center for artistic process that improves production quality, embraces new work, celebrates kids, and invests in the vitality of the community.

A new craft studio for the construction of sets and props provides additional space and upgraded technologies to increase creativity and efficiency to allow for the best production values for the Arden season.

An 80-seat studio theatre creates space for more readings and workshops of new work. It will be home to The Writers’ Room, our playwright-in-residence program, and will give audiences behind-the-scenes access to the new play development process.

Six classrooms will house the Arden’s education programs, creating an environment in which students work alongside professionals.

Additional rehearsal and performance spaces will allow other emerging artists to space to develop their work and share it with the community.

Fred and Emily Anton

Frederick W. Anton, III is President and CEO of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers’ Association. He has been a supporter of the Arden since 1990 when the Arden created St. Stephen’s Alley at 10th and Ludlow Streets, next door to PMA’s headquarters in the former Federal Reserve Bank Building at 925 Chestnut Street.

During that time, he founded and hosted the Arden’s Leadership Night, an annual advocacy event that introduced leaders of this region to the Arden’s plays and programming. These Leadership events played a key role in broadening the Arden’s base of supporters, as well as introducing new board members and key contributors.

During those St. Stephen’s Alley years, Mr. Anton and PMA generously donated use of a building on Ludlow Street that served as the Arden’s rehearsal space, as well as set and costume shops. In addition, Mr. Anton played a leadership role in the Arden’s move to our current facility in Old City. PMA’s Paul Luber used his real estate expertise and spent a considerable amount of time and energy working on the conversion of this facility with the architects and engineers. For his transformative contributions to the Arden, in 2011 Mr. Anton was selected by the Arden Board of Directors to be one of the inaugural members of the Cornerstone Society, an honorary group of individuals who have moved the organization forward in a significant way.

Mr. Anton acknowledges the role F. Otto Haas — the man for whom the theatre where you are about to see A Little Night Music is named — played in his life and career. “Otto was my mentor. He was Chairman of the Board of PMA when I first became President. Otto and I worked together on political action for the betterment of Pennsylvania. We also shared a mutual interest in the arts – first with the Walnut Street Theatre and then for Arden Theatre Company.”

Fred and Emily Anton are enthusiastic supporters of the Arden. They are longtime members of the Sylvan Society and have served as the Honorary Producers of one production each season for the past 5 years. We thank Fred and Emily Anton for their ongoing extraordinary support of the Arden and for their great passion for great stories by great storytellers. DIRECTOR’S Notes This is the 12th Sondheim musical that I’ve directed at the Arden (the 13th if you include Candide, to which he contributed lyrics). He is the most-produced writer in the Arden’s history (followed by Michael Hollinger and William Shakespeare).

During rehearsals for this production, I had the opportunity to interview Stephen Sondheim in front of an audience on the stage of Wilmington’s Grand Opera House. It was a remarkable evening during which he discussed his process and career, told stories that I can’t print, and charmed the audience with his wit, warmth and insight. “God is in the details” is one of his mantras and, throughout the interview, he offered “telling details” that brought his ideas and memories to vivid life — just as he has done again and again in his work.

Stephen Sondheim spent his childhood living on a farm outside of Doylestown and was a student at George School in Bucks County. It was during that time that he met Oscar Hammerstein — and the 15-year-old Sondheim asked the great lyricist and playwright to read his new musical, entitled By George. Hammerstein did — and thus began a mentorship that not only changed Sondheim’s life but arguably the course of the American musical.

“Oscar was passing the baton,” said Sondheim. “He caught me at just the right moment, before I became a person, before I hardened — that happens to you later. But at 15, you are clay.”

Like Hammerstein, Sondheim transformed the idea of what musicals could be. When declining a suggestion of a subject for a new musical, his typical response is: “It doesn’t sing.” Yet he found glorious voice for a host of extraordinary characters: a demon barber; presidential assassins; shoguns and samurai; a baker and his wife drawn into the woods. Sondheim’s audacity is staggering. He writes songs that remind me what is most remarkable about being alive in our complex world.

He also has had a profound influence on the next generation of musical theatre writers.

“Without Stephen Sondheim, there is no Next to Normal,” composer Tom Kitt said when that musical won the Pulitzer Prize. Nor would there be Caroline, or Change or Baby Case or Parade.

Over the years, as Sondheim has achieved greater acclaim and success, he has spent more and more energy supporting other writers. “I love passing on what Oscar passed on to me,” he says.

During our recent interview, while reflecting on Hammerstein’s investment in him as a teenager, Sondheim quietly remarked “I rarely say this in public, but I think Oscar would have been proud of me.” At that moment, you felt how profoundly one master had influenced another. By “passing the baton,” Hammerstein made it possible for this 15-year-old boy to grow into the man who transformed the American musical. It is a moment I will never forget — a “telling detail” from a man who has greatly enriched my life and whose work will continue to enrich the lives of artists and audiences for generations to come.

This production is dedicated to Jean Markovitz. She has been a volunteer, a supporter, a friend and a treasured member of the Arden family. She loves Sondheim’s work as much as I do.

Stephen Sondheim (Music and Lyrics) Wrote the music and lyrics for Road Show (2008), Passion (1994), Assasins (1991), Into the Woods (1987), Sunday in the Park with George (1984), Merrily We Roll Along (1981), Sweeney Todd (1979), Pacific Overtures (1976), The Frogs (1974), Follies (1971; revised in London, 1987), Company (1970), Anyone Can Whistle (1964), and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), as well as the lyrics for West Side Story (1957), Gypsy (1959), Do I Hear a Waltz? (1965) and additional lyrics for Candide (1973). Side by Side by Sondheim (1976), Marry Me a Little (1981), You’re Gonna Love Tomorrow (1983), Putting It Together (1993/99) and Sondheim on Sondheim (2010) are anthologies of his work. Sondheim has garnered many awards for his work including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, an Academy Award, eight Grammy Awards, and nine Tony Awards.

HUGH WHEELER (Book) was a novelist, playwright and screen writer. He wrote more than thirty mystery novels as well as the screenplays for Travels with My Aunt, Something for Everyone, A Little Night Music and Nijinsky. His plays include Big Fish, Little Fish (1961), Look: We’ve Come Through (1961) and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1966, adapted from the Jackson novel).

He co-authored the book for a new production of the 1919 musical Irene (1973), wrote the books for a new production of Candide (1973), Sweeney Todd (1979, based on a version of the play by Christopher Bond), and Meet Me in St. Louis (adapted from the 1949 M-G-M musical), contributed additional material for the musical Pacific Overtures (1976), and wrote a new adaptation of the Kurt Weill opera Silverlake, which was directed by Harold Prince at the New York Opera. He received Tony and Drama Desk Awards for A Little Night Music, Candide and Sweeney Todd. jason carr (Orchestrations) As Associate Composer of Chichester Festival Theatre, Jason composed Born Again (a musical of Ionesco’s Rhinoceros), and wrote music and lyrics for two new musicals; The Water Babies and Six Pictures of Lee Miller (nominated for the British Composer Awards). AMY L. MURPHY (Managing Director) A Philadelphia native, Amy co-founded the Arden in 1988 with Terrence J. Nolen and Aaron Posner. She is especially proud of the Arden Professional Apprentice program and its contribution to the Philadelphia cultural community. A graduate of Susquehanna University, Amy received the university’s first-ever Young Alumni Achievement Award. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders-Arts, a joint program of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Center for Social Innovation and National Arts Strategies. Amy serves on the Board of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and she served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council and the Executive Committee of the Non Profit Finance Fund. Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College.

Who’s Who ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers–on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community. We stage five productions each season as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. We create new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase and The Writers’ Room. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire community through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people.

THE ARDEN’S 2013/14 SEASON Next season, the Arden’s 26th, consists of five plays that exemplify what we do best: daring and ambitious musicals, dramas that grapple with the complicated notion of the American family, and provocative pieces by contemporary playwrights.

Our first production of the season is the Tony Award-winning musical Parade, with a book by Alfred Uhry and music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. Set in Georgia in 1913, Parade is based on the true story of Leo Frank, a Jewish man from the North who is accused of murdering a young girl, and his wife Lucille, who sets out to prove his innocence. Terry Nolen co-conceives the production with Jorge Cousineau, furthering the artisic partnership behind Next to Normal and Sunday in the Park with George. The cast is led by Ben Dibble as Leo and Jennie Eisenhower as Lucille, and features Rachel Camp, Jeff Coon, Sarah Gliko, Scott Greer, Robert Hager, Alex Keiper, Tony Lawton, and Michael Philip O’Brien.

In the fall on the Arcadia stage, we will present the Philadelphia premiere of Stick Fly by Lydia Diamond.

Set in a summer home in Martha’s Vineyard, Stick Fly is a juicy story of a wealthy, African-American family grappling with issues of race and class, romantic entanglements, and emerging family secrets. Walter Dallas returns to direct, after his production of A Raisin in the Sun became the highest-attended mainstage show in Arden history.

At the start of 2014, we present the Philadelphia premiere of Water by the Spoonful by Quiara Alegría Hudes. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, one half of this play revolves around a Puerto Rican American exMarine working at a Subway sandwich shop in Philadelphia and facing the sudden death of an aunt who raised him. The other half follows an online group of recovering crack addicts – but both stories are connected by the theme of searching for human connection in a harsh world. We are thrilled to bring Quiara’s voice to the Arden stage – she was born and raised in West Philadelphia and the first play she ever wrote, as a 10th grader at Central High School, was produced through Philadelphia Young Playwrights.

Spring 2014 brings the the world premiere of Curt Columbus’ new translation of Three Sisters, directed by Terry Nolen. This production is a culmination of The Chekhov Project, a two year exploration of the work of Anton Chekhov that has included Terry and Curt traveling to Russia, three one-day readings in Philadelphia and at Trinity Repertory Theatre in Providence, RI (where Curt is Artistic Director), and a two week workshop this coming summer. This passionate, adrenline-filled translation promises to change how Chekhov is heard by a modern audience, and features a cast that is more than up to the challenge: Jake Blouch, Scott Greer, James Ijames, Lou Lippa, Ian Merrill Peakes, Sarah Sandford, Luigi Sotille and Mary Tuomanen.

For our final production of the season, we are revisiting Michael Hollinger’s Incorruptible, which we premiered in 1996. For years, audience members have asked when we were going to do it again – they often refer to it as “the monk play.” It’s a very funny comedy set in a monastery during the Middle Ages – a farce that asks if it’s ok to do a little bad if the ultimate goal is to do good. Directed by Arden Associate Artistic Director Matthew Decker, Incorruptible will be the 10th production of a Michael Hollinger play on the Arden stage.

20 Years of Apprentices

On any given day, Arden Professional Apprentices (APAs) can be seen around the Arden selling tickets in the box office, assisting Arden Drama School teaching artists, helping load in the sets, giving curtain speeches, and much, much more. These individuals, whose contributions often go unsung, are stitched into the very fabric of the Arden and have helped, in ways both large and small, to shape the company that we are today. Beyond the doors of the Arden, former APAs are known throughout the Philadelphia theatre community as hard workers, fierce learners, and driven artisans. Countless theatre artists and administrators throughout the city are former Arden Apprentices, and many continue to remain connected to the Arden personally and professionally.

This season, the program — one of the most distinguished and rigorous theatre training programs in the country — celebrates its 20th year. To honor the 94 graduates of this program, and the extensive impact that they continue to have on the Philadelphia theatre community and beyond, we asked some of our former APAs about the lessons learned during their time at the Arden and how those lessons carry through to their lives today. Here are just a few of the responses we received: Brian Abernathy APA Class 8, 2000/01 Season Interim Executive Director, Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority; Arden Board President The thing that sticks out in my mind is problem solving - identifying obstacles and finding creative ways around them.

How to resolve complex issues with multiple stakeholders and making sure all of those stakeholders feel engaged. It’s been key to my professional success and something for which the Arden laid the foundation.

Meghan Walsh APA Class 13, 2005/06 season Finance Coordinator,The Food Trust Often times when I was an APA I was assigned to do something outside of my skill set or experience, and I wanted someone to tell me exactly how to do it. I learned to hold off on asking questions until I’d tried my best to find the answer or solution myself, and it’s been really useful in my career since my apprentice days.

No job seems too hard or daunting or impossible after the apprenticeship.That sort of confidence didn’t fully develop until after I left since I was still learning so much up until the end of the program.

It seems fitting that we celebrate 20 years of apprentices the same year that we will open the Hamilton Family Arts Center, a building dedicated to education and enrichment. With this new chapter in the Arden’s story, we honor the many apprentices making contributions to the cultural landscape of our city and our nation whose own education and enrichment began here at the Arden!
