WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
Construction sites are exciting places. There is so much activity: demolition (knocking things down); building (putting things together); and renovation (making old things new again). It can be a magical place. A pile of wood can become a wall; pieces of steel can be assembled to become a staircase. Buildings are never more beautiful than when they are being built. There is just so much possibility.
Terrence J. Nolen
This is a play about building. It takes place on a construction site, and it tells the story of a worker — a woodcarver named Gepetto — who carves a pile of wood, creating something very special. It’s nice that we’ve turned our stage into a construction site because we’ve been living with a much bigger construction site three doors away. Over the past year, we’ve been building the Hamilton Family Arts Center. Walk out the front door of the Arden, turn left, and you can see it. It will be an amazing place where we will have classes and camps and after-school programs. A place where kids can learn about theatre and a place where kids can make their own plays. Right now we’re asking for help. Consider taking a class at the Arden; or tell your family and friends that our building is almost done; or, if you can, make a donation in our piggy bank in the lobby. Together, we will make the Hamilton Family Arts Center a magical place that will be filled with kids and families for many years to come. It’s also nice to be talking about building because that brings us to someone who is very important to the Arden, our Technical Director Glenn Perlman. Glenn builds our sets. He has been working here since 1998, and Pinocchio is the 100th set that he has built for us. So if you saw Cinderella, sat under Zuckerman’s barn in Charlotte’s Web, or hung out with Frog and Toad, you’ve seen one of the sets that he built. One hundred piles of wood and steel turned into these amazing places. Glenn was in high school when he fell in love with building sets, and he has worked very hard to be the best at what he does. Glenn will be building future sets for us at the Hamilton Family Arts Center — another reason this building is so important. This version of Pinocchio is about a group of builders who start to tell a story. They use whatever is at hand — tools, scaffolding, hard hats. Most importantly, they use their imagination. They work together. This is a good time to celebrate all those people who come together to build
our plays. All those workers who have helped build the new Hamilton Family Arts Center. And Glenn Perlman, who is now building his 101st set for the Arden.
PS. Look around the set. Do you see the name Schwertner on some of the equipment? C.H. Schwertner & Son is the name of the company who is building the Hamilton Family Arts Center. They let us borrow some of their equipment for this production. This equipment was used to build the Hamilton Family Arts Center, and now it’s being used to help “build” the story of Pinocchio.
Glenn has three kids – Abby, Maddie and Max. He’s married to Alison Roberts, who designs and builds costumes for our plays. Glenn’s kids have grown up here at the Arden. Abby is now a member of Teen Arden. Max has been coming to see our plays since he was born! Here’s a picture of Max wearing his Arden t-shirt from James & the Giant Peach.
Here is a list of the stories we’ve told on our stages over the past 15 years. Which ones do you know?
PINOCCHIO CINDERELLA ROBIN HOOD CHARLOTTE’S WEB THE FLEA AND THE PROFESSOR THE BORROWERS IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE PETER PAN A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH GO, DOG, GO! DIRECTOR’S Notes Pinocchio is the story of a father and a son — about their complicated love for one another, the demands they put on each other, and their desire to be what the other wants them to be. Gepetto wants Pinocchio to obey him and go to school, but Pinocchio has other ideas in mind — most of which involve doing whatever he wants, acting ungrateful to all that his papa has given him, and choosing to go on all kinds of fun adventures. These adventures, few of which Gepetto would approve of, find Pinocchio in Matthew Decker a great deal of trouble, and through it all, he desperately wants one thing — to be a real boy. When you think of something that is real, you might think that it can walk and talk, sleep and eat, and think and feel. Pinocchio can do all of these things, even though he is only a wooden puppet. So what is it that finally makes Pinocchio become real? Throughout his adventures, Pinocchio learns a lot. He learns that sometimes your actions have consequences. He learns that things like honesty, trustworthiness and selflessness are really important qualities to have. He also learns that when someone is in trouble, you should try and help them. Learning these lessons is not easy for Pinocchio - much like growing up isn’t always that easy. But in the end, Pinocchio chooses to learn these lessons because of his love for his papa. And it is through Pinocchio’s recognition of that love that he truly becomes real. There are many different meanings you can take from a story like Pinocchio, and many different ways to tell the story. This version is set on a construction site where workers are renovating a theatre. They must use whatever objects are in the space to carve a puppet out of wood, fly a fairy through the air, and make Pinocchio’s nose grow. Creating this version of the story required the actors, designers, and me to use our imaginations, which was a lot of fun. The idea that this play is set on a construction site made me think about telling other stories in unconventional locations - imagine a Hansel and Gretel that takes place in a McDonald’s or a Jack and the Beanstalk that is told in a school gymnasium. What objects in those spaces would you use to tell those stories? And if you were to make up your play version of Pinocchio, where would you want it to take place? I’m really glad that you are seeing our version of Pinocchio and I hope you like it. Thank you for coming.
