WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director

Terrence J. Nolen

The original author of Beauty and the Beast was a French writer, Madame de Villeneuve. It was published in 1740 (in French of course) and was 362 pages long. A few years later, another French writer, Madame de Beaumont, wrote a new version of the story for kids. It was also written in French, but was soon translated into many other languages and became famous throughout the world. And since then, this story has been told and retold for each and every generation — including yours.

The tale of Beauty and the Beast has inspired operas, books, two television series, many different movies, and, of course, the beloved Disney film featuring a singing candelabra and all those amazing songs. There have been ballet versions of Beauty and the Beast. Hip Hop versions. Comic books. Graphic novels. As they famously sing in the Disney musical, this story is a “tale as old as time,” and it’s also a tale that has proven to be timeless. Our version of Beauty and the Beast is written by Charles Way, a British playwright who also wrote our play versions of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and The Borrowers. As you will see, he set his play in England, and was inspired, in part, by the stories of another great woman writer, Jane Austen. You should read her stories when you get older. Think about how many kids have heard the story of Beauty and the Beast since Madame de Villeneuve first wrote it down 275 years ago. Why do you think this story has been told so many times? If you made your own version of this story, how would you tell it? Welcome to our Beauty and the Beast. We hope you enjoy it.

P.S. The movie Into the Woods also tells new stories of famous fairy tale characters such as Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack (of the beanstalk fame). It’s rated PG, so you might have to wait a few years to see it, but it’s one of the best musicals ever written about fairy tales. It’s also being done onstage in Norristown by Theatre Horizon in February (theatrehorizon.org/shows/intothewoods). Check it out!

DIRECTOR’S Notes Ralph Waldo Emerson said: Always do what you are afraid to do. Rosa Parks said: I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear. I find it comforting to hear people talk about fear. Fear is a part of my life. Everyday. And I’m getting up there – in age that is. I thought growing up meant that I could tell fear to go away and leave me alone. And it would listen.

Whit MacLaughlin

Nope. Fear is still hanging around. Fear of doing a bad job. Fear of disapproval. Fear of having no friends. Fear of being ignored. Fear of making mistakes. I feel better about my fears when I’m surrounded by quotes. Here’s another one. Mark Twain said: Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear. Like I was saying, fears were very real when I was a kid. They’re still very real now. Growing up meant, for me, having something important enough to do that fear didn’t matter as much. Under the right circumstances, fear sat down and…I don’t know… played a video game or something. What’s your fear doing right now? Listening in on this conversation, probably. Benjamin Franklin said: Do not fear mistakes. You will know failure. Continue to reach out. Anyway, Belle, our Beauty, has fears. Her sister accuses her of being afraid of everything, which really is true at the beginning of our story. But once she finds something important to do…like save her father’s life...like go off and meet the Beast…she’s better able to deal with her fear. Her world opens up. Plato said: Courage is knowing what not to fear. The message (and I’m not spoiling anything here by saying it): Don’t be afraid of fear. Find something important to do and set off to do it.Your fears will still be there to chatter at you when you get back.

COMING THIS SPRING:

Children’s Theatre Season Sponsor:

At the Arden, we love telling stories on stage — especially ones that are for kids like you! This spring we are telling a story we like a lot called The Jungle Book. You may have heard of this story before — there are even a couple of movies about it. This is a brand-new version of the story. You get to be the very first audience to see it! In the story, Mowgli stumbles into the jungle as a baby and meets a wolf mother and father who adopt him and raise him like a wolf. He also meets Baloo, a sleepy brown bear, and Bagheera, a tough panther, who teach him the rules of the jungle. A tiger named Shere Khan is used to being the king of the jungle, and he doesn’t like how things change when Mowgli arrives. It’s up to Mowgli to use the lessons Baloo and Bagheera teach him about the jungle to stand up to Shere Khan! The Jungle Book starts performances next spring, but we are already imagining what the play will be like. We’ve asked some of our favorite actors to be in the play. Sean Lally, who played Robin Hood will be Shere Khan. Taysha Canales who played Rondi in Sideways Stories will be Mother Wolf. And Charlie Delmarcelle who played the Goose in Charlotte’s Web will be Baloo. We’re also thinking about how we will make a jungle full of animals come to life onstage. What would you include if you were making a jungle? Be sure to check out The Jungle Book when it starts performances in April. We can’t wait for you to see it! Photos by Mark Garvin
