WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
When we founded the Arden, we chose our mission to tell great stories by great storytellers because we knew that literary adaptations would be one of the cornerstones of our work. In our very first season, four of the five shows we produced were adaptations, and they've remained an integral part of our programming ever since - having just closed Douglas Irvine's adaptation of J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan and looking forward to Lisa Kron and Jeanine Tesori's musical adaptation of Alison Bechdel's graphic novel Fun Home. So I am thrilled to include this adaptation of The Bluest Eye as apart of our 30th anniversary season: a story written by author Toni Morrison, adapted by Lydia R. Diamond (whose play Stick Fly was produced at the Arden in 2014), directed by Raelle Myrick-Hodges (a former Arden Professional Apprentice who directed Two Trains Running for us in 2016). Brilliant storytellers all. The Bluest Eye is Toni Morrison’s first novel, written when she was 39 years old. A book editor at the time, Morrison rose at 4 am every morning to write before work. She set The Bluest Eye in Lorain, Ohio, the town in which she grew up, and has said that the idea for this story came from an encounter she had with a classmate when she was 12 years old. Throughout her storied career, Toni Morrison has received, among many others, the Pulitzer Prize and American Book Award for Beloved, the Nobel Prize in Literature for her body of work, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. We are honored to be staging The Bluest Eye with this extraordinary cast and artistic team. We are deep into planning for next season: finalizing rights, hiring directors, casting (and more casting). We can’t announce the entire season, but we can tell you what the fall will bring. We will open with the Tony Award-winning musical Once, based on the acclaimed film. Once features a virtuosic ensemble of actor/musicians who accompany themselves while bringing this stirring story and score to life – fitting as the show celebrates the power of music to bring people together. Over the past few months, so many of you have asked, “Have you considered doing A Doll’s House, Part 2?" and I am excited to share that we will be producing Lucas Hnath’s brilliant play next fall. Set 15 years after the door slams in Ibsen’s play, Nora returns. The play is an insightful and very funny exploration of how things have changed or, possibly, have not. AND we have already announced that Every Brilliant Thing with Scott Greer will be returning. For those of you who saw the play (or were cast in it) I’m confident you’ll want to see it again; for those of you who haven’t, subscribe now because this production will sell out. More details to come but we are very excited by how next season is shaping up and hope you’ll join us. I also want to let you know that GoKash Onstage’s production of V to X by Kash Goins is running from March 28 thru April 15 at our Bob and Selma Horan Studio Theatre. GoKash is a local theatre company in residence here at the Arden. I first saw V to X several years ago, and it was this play that led me to want to partner with this exciting company. If you like powerful and provocative theatre, go see this play. Thank you for joining us for Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. As always, please tell your friends about this production. We really appreciate it.
THANK YOU TO OUR HONORARY PRODUCERS Jeanne B. Fisher and Robert Lang and Hether and Donald Smith I remember reading The Bluest Eye when it was first published and just being bowled over, really haunted by it. It sent me on to read everything Toni Morrison wrote. This story hit me cold– that “the bluest eyes” could drive someone to such lengths, so narrow and unfair a standard of beauty. The narrator remembering this sad story had a totally different life, a contrast because she had a loving family. I am very curious to see how all this is handled in a play. It is a story that needs to be told again and again until it is no longer relevant. But what did I learn from this book – exactly how horrible racism is. It is the original sin of America and we need to decide to fight it every day so we can live the real promise of our beautiful country. - Jeanne Fisher Donald and I have loved the Arden for 30 years, and are delighted to be able to co-sponsor this production. - Hether Smith

This fall, Nora Helmer returns to the Arcadia Stage in this brilliant and hilarious new play.
