WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director I’ve read a lot of books in my life.

Terrence J. Nolen

The very first book I read by myself was a book by Dr. Seuss. It was One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. I’ll never forget the pride I felt when I read the last page of that book by myself and shut its bright yellow hardback cover. I had read my very first book – and nothing could stop me from reading more! So that’s what I did. I read books and, through them, travelled to new places, met extraordinary characters, and fell in love with stories and storytelling.

Dr. Seuss loved to get kids excited about reading. That’s why he wrote The Cat in the Hat. When he wrote the book, he used 223 words that kids learn when they first start to read. 208 of the words are one-syllable (such as “hat”); 14 are two-syllable words (like “mother”); and only one (“another”) has three syllables. Dr. Seuss also drew amazing illustrations for The Cat in the Hat, and he did so using only three colors: red, blue and black (and the white page of course). Most importantly, Dr. Seuss used his imagination. What a remarkable world he created with 223 words, 3 colors, and that extraordinary imagination. The Cat in the Hat is such a popular book that that it has sold over 11 million copies. It has also inspired television shows, a movie, a Broadway musical and, now, the play you are about to see. Our play uses all of Dr. Seuss’s words and retells his wonderful story. One of the great things about seeing a play based on a famous book is that you can see what we chose to do to bring this story to life, and you can think about what you would do. What choices would you make if you were creating a play based on The Cat in the Hat? Use your imagination… You know why I love live theatre? Because anything can happen. On page 14 of the book, there is a picture of the Cat standing on a ball as he balances a book, his umbrella and the fish. A few pages later, “ALL the things fall” – the Cat, the hat, the cake, the rake, the dish, the fish – all fly across pages 20 and 21. And no matter how many times you read the book, the Cat and “ALL the things” will always fall on those pages. But in theatre, anything can happen. Our Cat might stand on a ball, he might balance things, but since it’s actually happening, he might fall at any time. That’s what I love about theatre: it’s live, we are all in the same room together, and anything is possible. Thank you for coming to see our play. I hope that you like it.

ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS Here’s a Dr. Seuss meets Mad Libs mashup! Make up your own character – a PIG IN A WIG? A MOUSE IN A BLOUSE? Fill in the blank lines in the story below. You can do this with a friend, a teacher, a parent, or by yourself! Just don’t read the story until you’ve filled in all the words. After you are done, read your wacky and wonderful new story out loud.

“Look at me now!” said the ____________ in a ____________.

(animal)

(rhymes with the animal )

With a ________________ and a ___________________. (any noun)

(another noun)

On top of my ______________! (body part)

I can hold up ____________ ____________________!

(number)

(plural noun)

I can hold up the fish!

And a ____________toy _______________. (adjective)

(noun)

And some ______________ on a dish! (plural noun)

And look! I can _______________ on the ball.

(verb)

But that is not all! Oh, no. That Is not all…

Now, draw a picture to illustrate your story

In the play, you’ll see how the Cat handles balancing all of his stuff. How does your animal handle balancing all of their stuff? Draw it here:

DIRECTOR’S Notes

Doug Hara

Steve Pacek

Growing up in the world these days is not easy especially when a human-sized cat walks in through the front door and coaxes you into breaking every household rule imaginable! But if it’s all for the sake of fun, is it really soooo bad? That question has tormented Sally and her brother in Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat for more than half a century.

The idea of not following the rules is always a little “progressive,” especially in the time of The Cat in the Hat. In the 1950’s, children’s books were dominated by Dick and Jane, the straight-laced characters who taught kids how to read in addition to practical lessons about the world. But Theodor Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) wanted to challenge the system by making books FUN again for kids. His proposal for Sally and her brother was to see what happens if they allow a little unknown into their lives…allow things to go “out of the box” (pun intended), and then decide what to do about it. An interesting lesson in responsibility, at the very least. Obviously, that proposal was a huge success! The Cat in the Hat, as well as so many other Dr. Seuss books, has become an invaluable part of American literature. The characters, the rhyme patterns, the images...they are still stamped permanently on the imaginations of so many of us because they inspire a sense of creation...of play...and a delicious amount of wild abandon! The Cat in the Hat invites us to consider what “could” be, instead of always what “should.” It begs us to take a walk on the wild side every once in a while, because even the biggest of messes can be cleaned up. And it challenges us to explore our own limitations, in hopes of discovering where there is room for a little more fun to be had! Our re-telling of this beloved story has been a true collaboration at work (and play). Together, with an amazing team of artists at a theatre that values great stories by great story-tellers, we welcome you to experience The Cat in the Hat in a way you never have before...

Doug & Steve “I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny. But we can have lots of good fun that is funny!” - The Cat (in the Hat)

National Theatre of Great Britain, founded in 1963, and established on the South Bank in London in 1976, is central to the creative life of the UK. In its three theatres – the Olivier, the Lyttelton and the Cottesloe – it presents an eclectic mix of new plays and classics from the world repertoire, with seven or eight productions in repertory at any one time. And through an extensive programme of amplifying activities – Platform performances, backstage tours, foyer music, publications, exhibitions and outdoor events – it recognises that theatre doesn’t begin and end with the rise and fall of the curtain. The National endeavours to maintain and re-energise the great traditions of the British stage and to expand the horizons of audiences and artists alike. It aspires to reflect in its repertoire the diversity of the nation’s culture. It takes a particular responsibility for the creation of new work – offering at the NT Studio a space for research and development for the NT’s stages and the theatre as a whole. Through its Learning programme, it invites people of all ages to discover the NT’s repertoire, the skills and excitement of theatre-making, and the building itself. As the national theatre, it aims to foster the health of the wider British theatre through policies of collaboration and touring. These activities demonstrate the considerable public benefit provided by the NT, both locally and nationally. Between 20 and 26 new productions are staged each year in one of the NT’s three theatres. In 2010-11, the National’s total reach was 1.6 million people worldwide, through attendances on the South Bank, in the West End, on tour and through National Theatre Live, the digital broadcast of live performances to cinema screens all over the world. for ALL “My students really enjoyed the lessons, the book, and the play. I think it’s hard for my students because the majority of them never leave their neighborhoods and are not familiar with theatre. For the most part they are really interested in it but will never be given the opportunity to follow through. This is why the Arden is so important to them. It gives them a chance to experience things they would never get to in everyday life.” – 5th grade teacher at Morrison Elementary in North Philadelphia The Arden believes that every child deserves to be able to experience live theatre. That is why we created Arden for All. Through this Educational Outreach program, the Arden gives away 5,500 tickets a year to students who otherwise would not have access to theatre. This year, thanks to increased support from Target, we added an extra week of school performances and were able to give an additional 1, 000 tickets to kids. We have partnerships with thirteen schools in Philadelphia, Camden, NJ, and Ridley Park. In addition to tickets, 2,000 third through fifth grade students also receive in-class lessons taught by Arden Teaching Artists. These teaching artists are often actors from our shows - like Charlotte Ford, playing Thing 1 in The Cat in the Hat. We are proud that Arden for All brings the arts (and brilliant teaching artists) to so many children who would not otherwise experience the thrill of live performance, and are thankful to Target and all of the donors who make this possible. “Being able to connect the book with another version of the story on stage was a very valuable lesson for my students, one they would never have been able to experience without the program.Thank you so much.” – 5th grade teacher Camden, NJ
