WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
The idea for this play came in 2004 when, during a trip to London, the playwright visited the Tower of London. There, he saw a sign by a rack – a torture device – that read: “No prisoner was ever tortured in the Tower of London because of religion.” Cain is a Shakespearean expert – having founded the Boston Shakespeare Company – and a Jesuit priest. The seed for this remarkable play was planted. Bill Cain’s work is increasingly being embraced by Philadelphia theatres. How to Write a New Book for the Bible was produced by People’s Light last summer, and he is currently writing a new play for Philadelphia Theatre Company, entitled American Canvas, about the Philadelphian painter Thomas Eakins. We are thrilled to present the Philadelphia premiere of Bill Cain’s Equivocation.

Next up on the Arcadia Stage is the world premiere of a new play by Philadelphia’s Bruce Graham. Funnyman marks our 4th play by Bruce Graham, having produced Coyote on a Fence, the world premiere productions of Dex and Julie Sittin’ in a Tree and Something Intangible, the play inspired by the Disney brothers. Funnyman will mark the Arden’s 40th world premiere production. We hope you will come see it. But before that, we will be producing another world premiere, this one for kids: Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates by Laura Eason. Laura is a playwright with a growing reputation – she was recently named one of the top 10-most produced playwrights in the country for this coming season. She also writes for the Netflix series House of Cards. Though Hans Brinker is far from Frank Underwood in so many ways, I share this with you to reinforce that we are committed to bringing the best playwrights to create work for our kids. And Laura is a great playwright. If you have a kid in your life, please come check out Hans Brinker this holiday season. And if you don’t have a kid to bring, you can join the growing number of adults who attend our children’s theatre productions because they are great plays. But for now, welcome to the Globe Theatre – and to the world of William Shagspeare*.
*William Shakespeare’s name was not consistently spelled any particular way during his lifetime (1564-1616). It appeared as “Shakespere,” “Shakespear,” “Shakspeare,” “Shackspeare,” and “Shakspere”. To complicate things even further, “Shakespeare” spelled his name differently when he signed his own signature. “Shag” is based on Bill Cain’s favorite spelling of the Bard’s name: William Shagspeare.
Rock and roll meets Shakespeare in this explosive new take on the classic play.

UP NEXT ON THE ARDEN STAGE:
Funnyman tells the story of Chick Sherman, an aging vaudevillian star most famous for having played the Mad Hatter in a movie version of Alice in Wonderland. When the play begins, Chick’s career has been reduced to doing shtick for television commercials – and then redemption appears in the guise of an avant-garde absurdist play in a shabby off-Broadway theatre. Inspired, in part, by Bert Lahr’s decision to play the role of Vladimir in the American premiere of Waiting for Godot, Bruce also draws on his love for, and encyclopedic knowledge of, the great comics of the 20th century in creating the character of Chick Sherman. And what a character he is! Bruce writes extraordinary roles for actors, which is not surprising since he is also an actor. In fact, when we produced Bruce’s Something Intangible in 2009, all five cast members were recognized with Barrymore Award nominations. Bruce creates deeply-felt, complex characters – and artists and audiences have been drawn to his work. Funnyman will be directed by Matt Pfeiffer whose Arden directing credits include Romeo and Juliet, A Moon for the Misbegotten and Go, Dog, Go. Matt also directed Bruce Graham’s North of the Boulevard at Theatre Exile. Funnyman is part of a trilogy of plays, the first being Something Intangible (the play inspired by Walt and Roy Disney), about show business. Bruce has already completed a draft of the third play of the trilogy. Stay tuned. Funnyman is produced as part of a rolling world premiere agreement between Arden and Northlight Theatre, located outside of Chicago in Skokie, Illinois. In recent years, Northlight has premiered three of Bruce’s plays: The Outgoing Tide (2011); Stella and Lou (2013); and White Guy on a Bus (2015). This rolling world premiere gives Bruce the opportunity to develop Funnyman with different creative teams for different audiences, providing additional time, resources and perspective. Northlight produced the play this fall, with Chicago actor George Wendt (of Cheers fame) as Chick Sherman. Chicago Tribune’s Chris Jones raved that Funnyman is “a shrewdly penned and highly involving affair that captures a moment of momentous change in art, even as it probes the truth that comedians rarely have funny lives.” Audiences embraced the play, and the production extended due to popular demand. A great start for this new play.

DIRECTOR’S Notes When I first read Equivocation, I was reminded of David Davalos’ Wittenberg, a new play that we produced in 2008 that posited a coming together of Doctor Faustus, Martin Luther, and young Prince Hamlet at Wittenberg University. Both plays combine history with contemporary humor and storytelling; both riff on literary characters and traditions; and, most importantly, in both plays, the ideas contained within are dazzling. Equivocation is a wildly ambitious play. It is a historical thriller; a Doug Hara discourse on telling the truth in difficult times; and an examination of faith, religion, and redemption. Equivocation is also a valentine to the theatre. It takes us behind-the-scenes into the rehearsal room – in this case the Globe Theatre – to experience first-hand the act of making a new play. Equivocation captures the mix of magic and mayhem involved in the theatrical process. It also speaks to theatre’s great potential – to the inherent power and possibility of art. Writing about his play, Bill Cain said, “What real religion means, as well as real art and real family, is ever-widening circles of compassion and inclusion. And Equivocation is about including the excluded.” That’s also an apt description of what theatre does, it includes. It asks us to expand our hearts, our minds, and our understanding of others. Theatre people are remarkable, as I’ve been reminded daily while working with these actors on this play. They wrestle with ideas, give generously of themselves, and, certainly impressive with this play, learn all those lines. They strive to find the truth and then speak it as honestly as they can. And they do so with no small measure of humor and humility. They have a shared belief, one that fuels and sustains everyone who chooses to make a life in the theatre: that plays can matter. To all the artists, artisans, administrators, and generous supporters who dedicate themselves to creating “ever-widening circles of compassion and inclusion” – this production is for you.

NEW MUSICALS AT THE ARDEN In 1999, the Arden launched the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase with a workshop of Baby Case by Michael Ogborn. That workshop process was extraordinarily productive: songs were cut and new ones written; characters were dropped, others added; the point of view was sharpened; the storytelling strengthened; the new songs were dropped and newer ones created. The workshop process transformed the piece into something we knew we had to produce. In 2001, Baby Case received critical and audience acclaim; it was nominated for 11 Barrymore Awards (receiving 4, including Outstanding Musical), and established Michael Ogborn as one of this region’s most important musical theatre writers. It remains one of the landmark productions in our 28 year history. Of the 38 world premieres we’ve produced to date, only 5 have been musicals. Why? Developing a new musical is expensive. A musical is intensely collaborative and multi-faceted, with musical arrangements, choreography, and orchestrations. Despite these challenges, we are passionate about musical theatre and creating space for writers to push the boundaries of the art form. Pairing our passion with dedicated support from the Independence Foundation, the Arden is launching The New Musical Theatre Works Initiative, designed to develop three major musicals over the next three years (2015-2018). During the 2015/16, we will develop TouchTones, with music by Robert Maggio, book and lyrics by Michael Hollinger. TouchTones is set in the call center of a phone sex operation in 1998, just before the internet explosion. Featuring a remarkable score — Maggio’s music challenges the ear through dissonance, and seduces it with tunefulness, this provocative musical explores the way we use technology in the quest for (and escape from) intimacy. This piece will continue the Arden’s ongoing artistic collaboration with Michael Hollinger, which began in 1994 with An Empty Plate in the Café du Grand Boeuf. Along with TouchTones, we are commissioning the second act of Republic, with music by Brian Lowdermilk, book and lyrics by Kait Kerrigan. Based on Shakespeare’s Henry IV (Parts I & II) Republic is set against the political backdrop of 1970’s Northern Ireland. The score is filled with soaring rock anthems, raucous bar songs, and lush Celtic-inflected melodies. With a sweeping story, Republic is a hugely ambitious work that straddles the worlds of epic theatre and chamber opera. Both Brian and Kait have a longstanding relationship with the Arden. The pair grew up in the Greater Philadelphia area and have been attending Arden productions since they were young. Brian’s first professional theatre job was at the Arden when he played piano for our workshop of Baby Case. We will workshop Republic in 2016/17 and commission one more musical to feed this pipeline of new work. The New Musical Theatre Works Initiative will allow us to provide extraordinary writers the resources and support they need to create musicals that continue to advance the art form, engage and inspire audiences, and further Philadelphia’s reputation as an extraordinary community for the creation for new work. We are excited to share these great stories by great storytellers with you.
