WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director Welcome! There’s something exciting about being part of something that is brand new. We’ve all been excited about seeing a new movie or reading a book that’s just been published. We’ve all made sure we were home in time to see a new episode of a favorite TV show. Re-runs can be fun but it’s special to see something being shown for the very first time.

This is the world premiere production of The Flea and the Professor. That means that this is the very first time that this show is being performed. You are the first audience ever – in the entire world – to see this show. When we are choosing shows, we look for the best plays and musicals written for kids. We also ask writers to write new plays for us. A couple of years ago, we asked playwright Jordan Harrison if he wanted to write a new play for us. It was Jordan’s idea to write a play for Arden Children’s Theatre – he wanted to write for you. He also decided that he wanted to base his new play on a story by Hans Christian Andersen. And it was Jordan who decided that his new play for kids should actually be a new musical for kids (that’s when we got composer Richard Gray involved). Clearly Jordan is a very smart man. It’s been very exciting getting this show ready for you. Like the Professor and the Flea, we’ve had our own adventure creating this new musical. And now we ask you to join us on this adventure. Who knows, years from now, maybe you’ll take your own kids to see a production of The Flea and the Professor and, if so, you’ll be able to tell them that you were there at the very beginning – the very first time this show was ever done. Like The Flea and the Professor, it’s a story about two unlikely friends (though as Charlotte will tell you, she is an arachnid, not an insect like Flea.) The idea of family has become increasingly complex during my lifetime. What makes a family? Is it restricted to a mother, a father and their progeny? Certainly that was my personal experience, and I benefited greatly from it. But then, as I grew older, I began to feel like a bit of an outsider, even with the love and support my family so generously provided. There was a moment when I began to feel conspicuous wanting the particular things I wanted, and self-conscious for thinking what was considered normal and acceptable, strange and unacceptable. Sensing that I might be a bit of a freak, and assuming I must be adopted, I wandered the halls of the school and streets of my neighborhood feeling out of sync and oftentimes, invisible.

Then miraculously, or so it seemed to me at the time, I stumbled upon others who were similarly isolated within their nuclear structures, and considered a bit odd. These friends, who had dreams like me and desires that classified them as ‘other,’ began to coagulate around me, creating a new family entity. With this ad hoc unit, I was afforded another kind of energy and inspiration outside my original family. Together, we nourished and encouraged each other, indulging the need to dream our seemingly impossible dreams. This is why I am so drawn to the characters in The Flea and the Professor. Unconventional alliances are established and the most unlikely combinations of personalities find solace and inspiration in these unions. Parent-less folk forge new families with others who the world has left behind, and fears about who they are and where they’re going shrink when they travel towards their futures together. The Flea and the Professor reminds us what it’s like to be alone, and that a family is a collection of souls who help mitigate that loneliness.

With this production of The Flea and the Professor, we have helped the Arden achieve its dream of developing and producing an original play for children. No one does it better than the Arden, and this play is no exception. The talent Terry Nolen brought together to create this magical play is incredible. We have had the pleasure of getting to know the writer, director, and composer of Flea and what a team! Last spring, we traveled to Washington D.C. to attend the Kennedy Center New Visions/New Voices Festival, where an early version of this play was workshopped. Out of hundreds of plays from around the globe, Flea was selected to be a part of this prestigious event. In seeing this production come to fruition, we are all so proud of what has been accomplished. For all of us who have been involved for the past several years since this dream started, the most important thing is that this will be a production that should bring a smile to all the children and young of heart who see it. Bringing art of the highest quality to young audiences is vital, for they are the future. So many children and families would never get that opportunity if not for the commitment of the Arden, and the outreach made possible through its Arden for All program. Who’s Who AARON CROMIE (The Sea Captain/The Loyal Subject) is excited to be back at the Arden where he has performed in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,Twelfth Night, Charlotte’s Web and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. His puppet designs have been seen onstage here in The Borrowers,The BFG, Pacific Overtures and A Prayer for Owen Meany and he choreographed Sideways Stories from Wayside School. Aaron has directed plays for Lantern Theater, Azuka Theatre, Mum Puppettheatre and has received Barrymore Awards for Music Direction (Mum’s The Fantasticks) and for Choreography/ Movement (Lantern’s The Comedy of Errors). Aaron teaches theatre at the University of the Arts and Headlong Performance Institute, and is a graduate of the Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre. SCOTT GREER (The Flea) is always happy to be back at the Arden. Scott has worked for Walnut Street, Wilma, InterAct, 1812 Productions, People’s Light, Theatre Exile and others. She trained at BoarsHead Theatre in Michigan, doing everything from Shakespeare and musical comedy to original plays and musicals: in Virginia at Barksdale Dinner Theatre, Theatre IV and Virginia Museum Theatre; in New York at Light Opera of Manhattan, the Public Theatre and a variety of off-off Broadway; in Colorado at the Denver Center Theatre; in New Jersey at Foundation Theatre, Passage Theatre, Theatre Intime and seven seasons at McCarter Theatre. He is currently working on a musical adaptation of The Light Princess with The Borrowers playwright Charles Way. DAN KAZEMI (Musical Director) graduated from Haverford College with a B.A. in Music composition and a Theater minor. In Philadelphia, Dan musically directed Tick..Tick...Boom!, Austentatious, the PhillyRocks! concerts, The World Goes Round (Barrymore Nom), Reefer Madness, Avenue X (Barrymore Award Winner), Little Shop, Rooms, and Trailer Park for 11th Hour Theatre Company. He also garnered a Helen Hayes Nomination for his work on the DC premiere of the Musical of Musicals:The Musical. Dan served as musical director, arranger, and performed in The Irish and How They Got That Way (Walnut St Theater, Barrymore Nom). Recently, Dan musically directed Cabaret at Milwaukee Rep, and provided original music for Untitled Project # 213, a collaboration with Jenn Rose and Steve Pacek. Dan’s music has been performed at the Cirque de Demain in Paris and at the Philly debut of Loose Screws, a contemporary tap company. Dan is also the composer of a new musical, The Tapioca Miracle (www.thetapiocamircle.com). Who’s Who TERRENCE J. NOLEN (Producing Artistic Director) is co-founder of Arden Theatre Company. Favorite Arden productions include all-Philadelphia casts of All My Sons, Death of a Salesman,The Grapes of Wrath and Hedda Gabler and such musicals as Sweeney Todd, Pacific Overtures, Falsettos, Violet and Caroline, or Change. Terry directed the inaugural production of Arden Children’s Theatre, Charlotte’s Web. He has directed six worldpremiere plays by Michael Hollinger, three by Dennis Raymond Smeal, Michael Ogborn’s Baby Case, Bruce Graham’s Something Intangible, and recently directed Rogelio Martinez’s When Tang Met Laika at Denver Center Theatre Company. Terry has been nominated for 23 Barrymore Awards for his directing work at the Arden and received awards for The Baker’s Wife; Sweeney Todd; Opus; Winesburg, Ohio; Assassins and Something Intangible. He directed Michael Hollinger’s Opus at Primary Stages in New York and was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Director. His short film The Personal Touch was nominated for an Emmy Award. AMY L. MURPHY (Managing Director) A Philadelphia native, Amy co-founded the Arden in 1988 with Terry Nolen and Aaron Posner. She is especially proud of the Arden Professional Apprentice program and its contribution to the Philadelphia cultural community. A graduate of Susquehanna University, Amy received the university’s first-ever Young Alumni Achievement Award. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders-Arts which is a joint program of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Center for Social Innovation and National Arts Strategies. Amy has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council and the Executive Committee of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College. ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life the greatest stories by the greatest storytellers of all time. We stage five productions each season as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. We create and produce new work through our new-work development program, the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and our theatre classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire community through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people. We also offer sign language-interpreted, captioned and audio described performances and Pay-What-You-Can final dress rehearsals that benefit other nonprofits. Adventure Time! The Flea and the Professor like to go on awesome adventures together. They fly in a hot air balloon, tour the globe with their circus act, and explore a deserted island where some creepy Cannibals live. One of the reasons these adventures are super exciting is because they’re really fun. Another reason is because they get to share it with their best friend. Adventures can come in all shapes and sizes; just like friends. Sometimes adventures include traveling really far away in a car or on a plane. Adventures can even happen in your own backyard–using your imagination. We talked to some of our friends to find out what kind of adventures they’ve had or would like to go on. Here’s what they told us: One of my most exciting adventures was a trip to England with my friend Mary in 1981, several months after that other Royal Wedding. We survived pickpockets, cabdrivers we couldn’t understand, and driving a rental car with the steering wheel on the other side of the car. We saw the Globe Theater, where Shakespeare lived, and bought lots of silly wedding souvenirs in London. -Sue Serio, Weather Anchor for Good Day Philadelphia, Fox29 When I was eight years old, my family packed everything into our station wagon and moved all the way across the country. We took about a month to do it: we climbed glaciers, we panned for gold, and we counted cows outside the window. It was scary–I was leaving all of my friends behind–but also exciting. -Jordan Harrison, playwright of The Flea and the Professor One time I entered Veteran’s Stadium by sky-diving into it! When we jumped out of the plane the stadium was only as big as a cookie, it was an AMAZING ride even though we crash landed onto the turf field. I will never forget that moment! -SWOOP, mascot for the Phildelphia Eagles I want to drive across the ocean to try and get to Hawaii. -Oscar Roat, 1st Grade One day my great adventure would be travelling across the United States and Canada in order to attend a Major League Baseball game in every stadium. I would take my family on this adventure. We are all baseball fanatics! -Lieutenant Frank Milillo, 6th District Philadelphia I want to get to dress like a princess for a whole week even at school. And maybe ride a horse, too. -Shannon Archer, Kindergarten I had a fun adventure when I drove from Philadelphia to San Diego and back with my cat Nico. It took 4 days each way. Just me and my 20lb companion. Whether driving thru the Mojave Desert, the Rocky Mountains, or the Canyonlands of Utah, Nico was a faithful friend. Sitting on my lap for most of the ride, he’d occasionally even sit up straight with his hind paws on the steering wheel. (This was less helpful than he probably thought.) We bonded.
