WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director Welcome. One of the great things about being a kid is having friends. And better yet, one of those friends can become your best friend. When I was a kid, my best friend was Tommy Donaghy. We lived on the same block and went to the same school. We both loved plays. In fact, the first play I ever did (the Winnie the Pooh story where Pooh gets stuck in Rabbit’s hole) was in Tom’s backyard (there were bushes with a hole in them that made the perfect set). Your friends help make you who you are. When I was a kid, things were kind of different. There were no emails, Facebook or cell phones. I never texted my friends. If I wanted to say something to them I called them on the phone – one phone shared by my entire family – and that phone hung on a wall. There were seven kids in my family, and someone else was always on the phone. So, I had to walk down the street and knock on my friend’s door. But some things never change: we need our best friends. I love A Year with Frog and Toad. It’s a great musical about very important things. It’s about the seasons and cookies and how great it is to get mail. And, of course, it’s about a Frog and a Toad who are best friends. The good news is that they live just down the road from each other, so no need to text. We first did this show back in 2004. I bet many of you who are seeing this show weren’t even born then. That’s why we’re doing it again. We want to share it with kids who haven’t seen it (and with those who have and want to see it again). We are lucky to have Jeff Coon and Ben Dibble return to play Frog and Toad. Jeff and Ben are two of the very best actors in Philadelphia. They are also friends in real life. And they both have kids who will get to come see them do this show. I think that makes this a very special production. I hope you think about your best friends when you’re watching this show. Maybe you’re seeing it with them right now. DIRECTOR’S Notes Time Machine: an invention that moves one freely around in time. A Year With Frog and Toad is a time machine for me. I get in. I am whisked to 2004. Before some of you were born. I walk into a design meeting for the first production, armed with quotes from Ralph Waldo Emerson, the great American transcendentalist. There’s something about Emerson that seems totally right for Frog and Toad. I am reminded of America as it was close to its founding. “A friend may well be reckoned the masterpiece of nature.” Emerson knew something important about both children and adults. Friends are like vegetables in a garden – they require tending, but the work yields nourishing rewards. We invent a world on the edge of a New England pond. Tiny houses and oversized leaves – rustic, nostalgic, natural. There are my children, twins Jane and Emory, watching the first production. They’re three, but they fall in love with the show. They sing the songs for the next four years. The machine lands in 2008. Jeff Coon and Ben Dibble are back, with children of their own. The show gives us opportunities to be heroes for our kids. Rehearsals are a great pleasure. I am reminded of another Emerson quote: “It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.” We laugh a lot. In the production, Frog and Toad’s world is safe, with simple pleasures. Jane and Emory, now seven, induct Jeff and Ben along with their characters into our family. Time travel to 2015. Terry Nolen comes to me with the opportunity to work on the show again. Third time’s a charm. I say YES without hesitation. Ben and Jeff say yes as well. Jane and Emory are 15, but they say yes too. They can’t wait for opening. Now it’s 2016, we’re back in rehearsal together, all of us. It’s the present and the show feels like a joy explosion, a public affirmation of grace and hope. Soon, the time machine will take me to the future, where civility and human virtue are as Emerson saw them – central to the way we behave as a nation. And with each other. Luminous. Hopeful. As friends.

He and his brother have collaborated with Richard Dresser on Johnny Baseball which was seen at the American Repertory Theater and the Williamstown Theatre Festival and the team a new creepy musical called The Holler. Willie was nominated for and an Academy Award with his friend Henry Krieger for the song “Patience” from the movie version of Dreamgirls. He has added two songs to the stage version of Dreamgirls for a production now playing in London. They also recently collaborated on the song “No Dames” for the Coen brothers, Hail Caesar. In 1981, Reale founded The 52nd Street Project, an organization that brings inner-city children together with professional theater artists. He served as the theater’s artistic director for 18 years. The Project’s programs are replicated at a dozen sites in the States and at Scene and Heard here in London. He was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in recognition of his ingenuity in creating theater and theater education programs for young people. Willie won three Emmys for his re-invention of The Electric Company, a literacy show, for PBS and currently airing on HBO. He has written for a number of American television dramas and currently serves as Co-Executive Producer for Billions on Showtime. Amy serves on the Board of Theatre Philadelphia. She has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council, Theatre Communications Group and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College. TERRENCE J. NOLEN (Producing Artistic Director) is co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of Arden Theatre Company. Favorite Arden productions include all-Philadelphia casts of August: Osage County, Death of a Salesman, The Grapes of Wrath and Hedda Gabler; and such musicals as Next to Normal, Sweeney Todd, Pacific Overtures,Violet, and Caroline, or Change. Terry directed the inaugural production of Arden Children’s Theatre, Charlotte’s Web. He has directed seven worldpremiere plays by Michael Hollinger, three by Dennis Raymond Smeal, three by Michael Ogborn, two by Rogelio Martinez, and Bruce Graham’s Something Intangible. Terry has been nominated for 25 Barrymore Awards for his directing work at the Arden and received awards for The Baker’s Wife, Sweeney Todd, Opus,Winesburg, Ohio; Assassins, and Something Intangible. He directed Michael Hollinger’s Opus at Primary Stages in New York and was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Director. ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers–on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community. We stage five productions each season as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. We create and produce new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire community through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people, and our Arden Arts Education Fund provides scholarships for Arden Drama School classes and camps. 1½ cups all purpose flour (add more if the dough seems too sticky) ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt ¾ cup chocolate chips (You can use a combination of chocolate chips and chocolate chunks)
INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Microwave the butter for about 40 seconds to just barely melt it. It shouldn't be hot - but it should be almost entirely in liquid form. Using a stand mixer or electric beaters, beat the butter with the sugars until creamy. Add the vanilla and the egg; beat on low speed until just incorporated - 10-15 seconds or so (if you beat the egg for too long, the cookies will be stiff). Add the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix until crumbles form. Use your hands to press the crumbles together into a dough. It should form one large ball that is easy to handle (right at the stage between "wet" dough and "dry" dough). Add the chocolate chips and incorporate with your hands. Roll the dough into 12 large balls and place on a cookie sheet. Bake for 9-11 minutes until the cookies look puffy and dry and just barely golden. Be careful not to over bake. Take them out even if they look like they're not done yet. They'll be pale and puffy. Let them cool on the pan for a good 30 minutes or so (Okay, eat four or five like Frog and Toad but then let the rest of them cool). They will sink down and turn into these dense, buttery, soft cookies that are the best in all the land. These should stay soft for many days if kept in an airtight container. NOTES:

Based on a Scottish legend, THE LIGHT PRINCESS tells the story of a teenager who is born with a curse: she has no gravity of any kind – in addition to having no feelings for others, she floats in the air, unable to ever touch the ground. This is a very funny new musical filled with wonderful characters and amazing new songs. Not only will the cast sing and bring all of the characters to life, they will also play all of the musical instruments: piano, accordion, mandolin, guitar, clarinet, saxophone, ukulele (and maybe even more!) THE LIGHT PRINCESS celebrates the power of music to ignite our imagination, get us to stomp our feet, and make our spirits soar. Well, actually, not by Snail, but by the actor who plays Snail: Steve Pacek. Steve has been in many Arden Children's Theatre shows, including playing Mrs. Gorf in SIDEWAYS STORIES FROM WAYSIDE SCHOOL and Mouse in IF YOU GIVE A MOUSE A COOKIE.
