Welcome. One of the great things about being a kid is having friends. And better yet, one of those friends can become your best friend. When I was a kid, my best friend was Tommy Donaghy. We lived on the same block and went to the same school. We both loved plays. In fact, the first play I ever did (Winnie the Pooh) was in Tom’s backyard. Your friends help make you who you are.

When I was a kid, things were kind of different. There were no emails, Facebook or cell phones. I never texted my friends. If I wanted to say something to them I called them on the phone – one phone shared by my entire family – and that phone hung on a wall. There were seven kids in my family, so someone else was always on the phone. So, I had to walk down the street and knock on my friend’s door. But some things never change: we need our best friends. I love A Year with Frog and Toad. It’s a great musical about very important things. It’s about the seasons and cookies and how great it is to get mail. And, of course, it’s about a Frog and a Toad who are best friends. The good news is that they live just down the road from each other, so no need to text.

We first did this show back in 2004. We are so lucky to have Jeff and Ben return to play Frog and Toad. These are two very talented actors: Jeff just played Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire at the Walnut Street Theater, and Ben played Candide in our production of Candide last fall – these are two of the most challenging roles ever written. Many of the designers and crew members who worked on the first Frog and Toad are also back. We love making theatre for kids and we love that our best and brightest actors and designers do as well. Jeff and Ben are also best friends in real life. They love doing this show together. I hope you share this show with your best friend. Maybe you’re seeing it with them right now. Dear Ben and Jeff, What a pleasure to return with you to A Year with Frog and Toad! We had a pretty great time together making it the first time around. But this time you both have your own children. Busy guys!

Whit MacLaughlin It’s even better doing this piece when you have children of your own. There are real benefits. I speak from experience—I have twin seven-year-olds, Jane and Emory, who saw the show five years ago and still sing the music. They can’t wait to see it again. That’s an important thing about kids—a great thing is ALWAYS a great thing. It doesn’t matter if it’s the first time or the fifth time. So what follows are the benefits of doing A Year with Frog and Toad when you have kids: Benefit 1: You have something to talk about at dinner. You can talk about your progress in rehearsal. The kids can find out what it’s like to make a play, what it takes to put this sort of thing together. And you won’t be playing some brutish lout in New Orleans or some guy in a string of love affairs like in all your other shows. No, you’re playing FROG and TOAD; you’re playing zen masters. Benefit 2: A Year with Frog and Toad is an almost perfect show. I would say perfect but we all know the tricky parts <grin>. It’s simple in the best kind of way, and human (or amphibian!), and there are no car crashes. In fact, no bloodshed of any kind. The tunes are great. And the main point? It’s really important to have friends. Beautiful. True five years ago when we did the show the first time around. True now. Take that home to the kids. Benefit 3: You get to inhabit an almost perfect world. A world of safety and simple pleasures. Of the gentle and almost delicious pain of passing time. Of disagreements that get resolved. Of uncomplicated love. Just try getting through a rehearsal without weeping. Show your kids how you weep. Benefit 4 (big benefit!): You get to be heroes. You go home at night victorious. You can read the Lobel books to them before bed for years to come and their eyes will shine as they imagine you in your ridiculous bathing suits or you trying to fly the kite or you coaxing seeds to grow with a tuba. Benefit 5 (finally): You give families in the Arden community a way to hang out together when that sort of time is scarce and very precious. A great gift. So, let’s get cracking. And let’s also welcome the wondeful newcomers into the show: Danielle, Erin, and Nick. Maybe a couple of years from now they’ll all have kids and I can write this letter again…but, maybe not. WHO’S WHO JEFFREY COON (Frog) So glad to be spending another year back on the pond with his good friend, Toad. He was most recently seen as Stanley Kowalski in WST’s A Streetcar Named Desire, Prince Aidan of Sargasso in Cinderella at People’s Light & Theatre Co and The Governor of Montevideo, et al. in Candide here at the Arden. He is extremely grateful to Terry, Amy, Amy DBD and Whit for their friendship and for continuing to help him fight the good fight of a working actor. This one is most definitely for my most beautiful tadpoles, Piper and Jackson, who weren’t born to see this the first time. I love you, my babies. BEN DIBBLE (Toad) could not be happier to return to the swamps of Frog and Toad. Recent credits include Corny Collins in Hairspray at the Walnut and the title role in the Arden’s production of Candide. Next up, Leo Bloom in The Producers at the Walnut. DANIELLE G. HERBERT (Mouse) It’s great to be back at the Arden! Recent credits include two seasons at the Walnut Street Theatre: Hairspray (Dynamite); State Fair; Les Mis (Factory Girl); Peter Pan (Indian); Man of La Mancha (Gypsy Dancer); and Carousel; Caroline, or Change (The Radio) at the Arden; and West Side Story (Anita, Barrymore nominee) at the New Candle Light Theatre. Danielle is also a former back-up singer for Grammy winning R&B vocalist, Jill Scott. Up next: Respect at Act 2 Playhouse. DONALD EASTMAN (Scenic Designer) is thrilled to return to the Arden for Frog and Toad. JORGE COUSINEAU (Sound Designer) is very proud to have worked on most of the Arden Children’s Theatre productions including the original production of Frog and Toad and favorites like The Stinky Cheese Man, The BFG, Sleeping Beauty and the recent James and the Giant Peach. He also designs scenery, sound and video for theater companies such as the Wilma, Philadelphia Theatre Company, 1812 Productions, Theatre Exile and InterAct. As always, Jorge has to thank his children who help and inspire much of his work. DAVID AMES (Music Director) is pleased as punch to be back playing the piano at Philly’s phavorite Old City playhouse, where he’s previously played plenty of performances. These include Caroline, or Change, Assassins, Candide (AMD), and Go, Dog. Go! (MD). Other Philadelphia credits include Treasure Island and Cinderella (People’s Light) and the 2008 Rainbow Company Festival (Prince Music Theatre). JOHN DAVID FLAK (Stage Manager) is thrilled to be hopping around with Frog and Toad again. John has been an Actors Equity stage manager for over 18 years in Louisville, Chicago and Philadelphia. A Year with Frog and Toad is one of his favorite productions. John dedicates his work on this show to Jenny and his little ladies, Rainey and Harper. LEE ANN ETZOLD (Choreographer) is happy to return to the pond once again for A Year with Frog and Toad. She co-founded New Paradise Laboratories, and is pleased to be working again with Whit MacLaughlin with whom she co-directed and choreographed PROM. She works as a performer, director, writer and choreographer with Pig Iron, Philadelphia Theatre Company, Brat, Headlong, Azuka, and the Lantern. Lee shared the 2004 Barrymore for Outstanding Ensemble and received a 2008 Barrymore for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Play, The Happiness Lecture, with Bill Irwin. She studied clown with Ami Hathab in Paris, and participated in the Director’s Lab at Lincoln Center Theatre. She recently directed Michael Hollinger’s Red Herring at Drexel University.

ARNOLD LOBEL (Author) During his distinguished career Mr. Lobel wrote and/or illustrated over 70 books for children. To his illustrating credit, he had a Caldecott Medal book – Fables (1981) – and two Caldecott Honor books - his own Frog and Toad are Friends (1971) and Hildilid’s Night by Cheli Duran Ryan (1972). But to his greatest credit, he had a following a millions of young children with whom he shared the warmth and humor of his unpretentious vision of life. In addition to the Frog and Toad books, Owl at Home, Mouse Tales, The Book of Pigericks, and many other popular books he created, Mr. Lobel also illustrated other writers’ texts that captured his fancy. In 1977 Mr. Lobel and his wife Anita, a distinguished children’s book author and artist in her own right, collaborated on their first book, How the Rooster Saved the Day, chosen by School Library Journal as one of the Best Books of the Year, 1977. They then collaborated on three more books, A Treeful of Pigs, a 1979 ALA Notable Book; On Market Street, a 1982 Caldecott Honor Book; and The Rose in My Garden, a 1984 Boston Globe/Horn Book Honor Book. He has collaborated with his brother, Robert, on a musical called Once Around the City, which was produced by New York Stage and Film and at the Second Stage Theatre in New York. Other plays have been produced at the Ensemble Studio Theatre, the Actors Theatre of Louisville, and Circle Repertory Company. Willie received two Tony nominations for his book and lyrics for A Year with Frog and Toad. In 1981, he founded The 52nd Street Project, an organization that brings inner-city chil-

WHO’S WHO dren together with professional theatre artists to create theatre and he served as the theatre’s artistic director for 18 years. For television, Mr. Reale has written Homicide: Life on the Streets, Deadline and Mr. Sterling. Willie is married to producer Jenny Gersten. They have two children, Augustus and Leonardo.

The Baker’s Wife, Sweeney Todd, Opus, Winesburg, Ohio and Assassins. He directed Michael Hollinger’s Opus at Primary Stages in New York City and was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Director. His short film The Personal Touch was nominated for an Emmy Award.

WHIT MACLAUGHLIN (Director) is the OBIE Awardwinning Artistic Director of New Paradise Laboratories (NPL). For the Arden he directed James and the Giant Peach, Sleeping Beauty, The BFG, The Stinky Cheese Man, The Dinosaur Musical, A Year with Frog and Toad, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, The Boxcar Children, and Bunnicula, as well as The Syringa Tree, Twelfth Night and An Empty Plate in the Café du Grand Boeuf. He has directed Tale of a West Texas Marsupial Girl, the Hobbit, and PROM for the Tony Award-winning Children’s Theatre Company of Minneapolis. He has created a number of productions for his company New Paradise Labs including Batch, which was premiered at the Humana Festival of New American Plays. Last year he also directed the multi-Barrymore nominated Frozen at Interact Theatre and The Joans with singer/songwriter Annie Enneking in Minneapolis. Coming up with NPL: Fatebook, a cyberspace/realspace extravaganza to premiere in the fall of 2009. Love to Catharine, Jane, and Emory.

AMY L. MURPHY (Managing Director) A Philadelphia native, Amy co-founded the Arden in 1988 with Terry Nolen and Aaron Posner. She is especially proud of the Arden Professional Apprentice program and its contribution to the Philadelphia cultural community. A graduate of Susquehanna University, Amy received the university’s first-ever Young Alumni Achievement Award. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders-Arts which is a joint program of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Center for Social Innovation and National Arts Strategies. Amy has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council and the Executive Committee of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008/09 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College.

ELANA BOULOS (Assistant Director) feels blessed to be working with Whit on a show that’s constantly bringing happiness and smiles into her life. Elana is a student at the University of the Arts studying Theatre Direction, as well as the Arden’s Artistic Intern. NOLEN (Producing Artistic Director) is the Producting Artistic Director and co-founder of Arden Theatre Company. FROG AND TOAD ARE FRIENDS Actors Jeff Coon (Frog) and Ben Dibble (Toad) have been close friends for eight years. Here they talk about friendship, acting, and life as an amphibian. What do you like the most about each other? Ben: His ability to enjoy and experience things with total abandon. He savors life. He doesn’t suppress his reaction to things. I love that about Jeffrey. Jeff: I feel unconditionally accepted by Ben, with all my faults, foibles and flaws. He takes me at face value and doesn’t try to make me something else. Besides the fact that he’s ridiculously talented… Speaking of that, what do you each admire the most about the other as an actor? Ben: I think, oddly, what I admire about Jeff as an actor is what I like about him as a friend. He always leads chest first through whatever he’s doing, with great bravery and joy. It is awesome. Also, he makes me laugh in a way that very few people do. Jeff: I admire Ben’s absolute openness to everything that occurs. When he acts, his face is a beautiful screen to what goes on for him. I’m constantly in true admiration of that.

Does anything about the other guy drive you crazy? Ben: Whenever we are singing together, we inevitably try to sing louder than the other one. We can over-sing to the point of insanity. Jeff: There are two things that drive me crazy about Ben. One - he’s younger than I am. Two, there aren’t enough shows that we can do together. There aren’t enough shows about brothers or friends or even rivals. Ben: There aren’t a lot of two tenor shows out there in the world. What does it mean to you to get to do a show with your best friend about best friends? Ben: It’s among the most delightful professional experiences ever. The show is a treat to do, but the fact that I get to do it with one of my best friends turns it from treat to gift. Jeff: When Terry asked me to do this show again I said,“I’ve got to find out if Dibble’s doing it first, because I wouldn’t want to do it without him.” Jeff, who in your life reminds you of Frog? Jeff: Ben! Ben, and my son, Jackson. Ben: That’s funny, because my son reminds me of Toad! Jeff: Ben is so sunshine-y to me. I think Frog’s essence is that, even in the hard times, he can find something beautiful. He finds love in all things. That reminds me a lot of Ben and my son Jackson, who is a loveable little guy who likes to cuddle and receive the wonders of the world. Ben: In 20 years, the Arden should do a revival of Frog and Toad starring Jackson Coon as Frog and Jonah Dibble as Toad, because, personality-wise, they are already inclined that way. It’s kind of hilarious. Alright. Finish this sentence,“When I think of Frog and Toad, the kid in me LOVES ________________. Ben: The kid in me goes crazy for the music. Having read the stories, the music tells them so well. Jeff: I love the sense of creativity that I think abounds in it. I love “Large and Terrible Frog.” Ben: Oh, man. I love that sequence. Jeff: It’s really simple. It could be huge puppets dropping from the sky and sounds and light effects and it’s not. It’s a big flashlight, and storytelling.

Ben: That it is a story about two friends and how they go through adventures and have fights and encourage each other to do new things, but the core of the story is that they are friends and love each other and accept each other. No amount of disagreement or danger can take that away. That is the most wonderful thing for my kids to see, that love and real connection with somebody else is priceless. Jeff: The safety that is inherent in the relationship between Frog and Toad. Whatever warts you have...

Ben: hahaha. He said warts… Jeff: ...whatever warts, they are ok. In fact, it’s what we love about you as your parents. Your shyness or your nervousness or your ill temper... Ben: or your awkwardness… Jeff: ...your awkwardness is ok because we want you to know the safety of that unconditional acceptance. What’s life all about? Ben: Life is like Frog and Toad - you have adventures and episodes that change as you move through your day and it’s about enjoying your journey and finding a way how to get through it alive. You’ve got to enjoy it. But you also have to survive. Jeff: (Cracking up.) What he said. Ben: And you have to be able to laugh at yourself. The bathing suit episode is pretty traumatic for Toad, but I think that later they laugh and laugh about it. Toad doesn’t laugh about it at all in the moment, but I think even he can laugh at himself after the fact. ALL IN THE FAMILY Hey, kids! Do you have a brother or sister? Do you like them? Well, A Year with Frog and Toad was written by two brothers who like each other very much. Willie wrote the book (all the words that are not sung) and all the lyrics (all the words that are sung) and Rob wrote all the music. When they were little, they made each other laugh with sock puppets on the living room couch. As they grew older, Willie became a writer and Rob became a composer (a person who writes music). They didn’t combine their talents until they were all grown up. In fact, they didn’t know they could create shows together until Willie visited Rob in Arizona, where Rob was living at the time. They went off together into the Red Rocks of Sedona to see if they could write together. It was the beginning of a beautiful partnership.
