WELCOME
from the Producing Artistic Director
Welcome to our celebration of the work of August Wilson. This is the first time in the Arden’s history that we have two productions by the same writer running at the same time! Gem of the Ocean marks our fourth production of August Wilson’s American Century Cycle – Wilson’s series of ten plays, each set in a different decade, that charts the African American experience throughout the twentieth century. While it was Wilson’s secondto-last play written, Gem is set in 1904, and is, chronologically, the first story of the Cycle. How I Learned What I Learned – a one-person memoir that was originally written and performed by August Wilson in 2003 – is about the playwright coming of age as an artist in Pittsburgh’s Hill District, the neighborhood in which Gem of the Ocean and all but one of the American Century Cycle plays are set. Gem is an epic, sometimes operatic story; How I Learned is an intimate and more personal one. Each of these plays allows us to experience August Wilson’s genius – his remarkable characters as well as a love for storytelling and language that is both soaring and searing. I hope you will see them both. We have two extraordinary directors leading these productions: James Ijames (Gem of the Ocean) and Malika Oyetimein (How I Learned What I Learned). James has been acting here at the Arden since 2008, appearing in productions such as Superior Donuts, Three Sisters, Endgame, and is also an acclaimed playwright. Malika is a Philadelphia director who has been making a name for herself nationally as an exciting, passionate director. We are thrilled to have these great Philadelphia artists making their Arden directorial debuts. Of the ten plays in August Wilson’s American Century Cycle, the Arden has produced The Piano Lesson (set in the 1930s), Fences (1950s), Two Trains Running (1960s) and now Gem Of The Ocean, set the 1900s and marking the dawning of a new century and the Cycle itself. In the coming years, we will continue to work our way through these remarkable plays. Six more decades. Six more magnificent stories still to explore. Thank you for joining us on this journey.

THANK YOU TO OUR HONORARY PRODUCERS We are honored to support the Arden and this production of August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean. We have enjoyed a long relationship with the Arden and Steve is privileged to serve on the Board of Directors. Whether it is a cabaret, a one person play, or a full mainstage production: we love appreciating, consuming, and supporting truly great live theatre. Great stories both draw you in then push you forward as you look at life through someone else’s eyes. We wanted to sponsor this show in particular because of the power of August Wilson’s storytelling. He has a way of crafting a story that is rare and powerful. The dramatic and magical nature of Gem of the Ocean sets the tone for the rest of the Century Cycle which documents the African American experience in the Hill District of Pittsburgh throughout the twentieth century. At the helm of this production is director James Ijames. We have watched James countless times as an actor, cheered him on as a nationally recognized playwright, and now are beyond honored to be supporting him in his Arden directorial debut. James brings insight and perspective into this piece so that we, the audience, can journey through Gem of the Ocean together. - June and Steve Wolfson

Director's Note "All that you touch you Change. All that you Change Changes you. The only lasting truth is Change. God Is Change." From Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. Gem of the Ocean is chronologically the first play in August Wilson’s unprecedented 20th Century Cycle taking place in 1904, only thirty-nine years after slavery. What is striking to me, a thirty-eight year old black man born and raised in the American South, is that my entire lifespan could rest neatly between the book ends of enslavement and legislative freedom. Had I been born property in 1865, in the thirty-ninth year of that life I could still be grappling with what freedom means and all of the massive change that comes with that freedom. That is where the story of Gem of the Ocean begins. With a group of people still tethered to the idea of enslavement while also forging forward to discover all the ways one can be more free. In many ways, Gem of the Ocean is August Wilson’s most contemporary play. We see Wilson’s ability to create worlds of magical realism in Fences and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, we see a memory play in Seven Guitars and political protest stories in King Hedley II,Two Trains Running, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. In Gem of the Ocean we see Wilson the Futurist. In Gem, Wilson is imagining the possibility of Black Life and there is the sensibility of the speculative in this play. Gem of the Ocean reads as much like history as it does science fiction, the genre of American Literature that allows Black writers to imagine a life elsewhere and a future that is of our own creation. The people that pass through the doors of 1839 Wiley Avenue in Pittsburgh, PA are all archetypes of possible futures each offering to the story some perspective on what Black people should do at the precipice of possibility that was the beginning of the 20th Century. Is our liberation locked inside of the law as Caesar believes, is it locked in ceremony and remembering as Aunt Ester and Black Mary believe, is it locked in force and courage as Solly and Eli believe? Or is it locked inside taking all of these things that we have learned from the past and walking into the future, insistent on changing everything we touch as Citizen ultimately does? Though the play is set at the beginning of the 20th Century, the events of the play seem to make the complexities, pathos and creativity of modern Black American life feel like echoes of the past. I hope this production illuminates for the audience the idea that the power of the people is the engine of change in American life, from The Underground Railroad, to the Civil Rights Movement of the 60’s to Black Lives Matter today, the people have the power to change everything we touch and also be changed by everything we change.

Thank you to our Honorary Producers Donald and I have loved the Arden for 30 years, and are delighted to be able to co-sponsor this production. - Hether Smith August Wilson is one of the greatest playwrights of our time. Not many people realize that Gem of the Ocean and How I Learned What I Learned were actually written concurrently. Wilson was ruminating on them both at the same time and published them in quick succession. One is a massive story about an African American family and their heritage, the other is memoir in monologue form. Despite the drastic difference in size, these plays compliment and speak to each other as they delve into the same themes that Wilson couldn’t escape. I am very curious to see how all this is handled. It is a conversation that needs to be had again and again. The lesson we should take away, and can always take away is exactly how horrible racism is. It is the original sin of America and we need to decide to fight it every day so we can live the real promise of our beautiful country. - Jeanne Fisher

Director's Note August Wilson was a prolific playwright whose Century Cycle garnered him not one, but two Pulitzer Prizes. August Wilson was also a man whose, at one point of his life, main mission was to make rent. August Wilson was a man - an Everyman. A high school dropout and poet who understood that there are no limitations to acquiring knowledge. He understood that a university is not the only place that knowledge is gained and skill is honed. He understood that a man is made by his community. The setting of our play is Pittsburgh - the crucible in which this great man was forged. Enjoy.
