Under the Skin Michael Hollinger’s Under the Skin tells the story of a man who needs a kidney. Developing this show has sparked some interesting conversations about kidney donation. Would you give up your kidney for a parent? For your child? For a sibling? For all of your siblings? For a stranger? Below are three stories of people who answered yes to someone. I found John, my Mr. Right, when I was forty-six. He had end-stage kidney disease. John’s nephrologist suggested I become a living donor. No way, I thought, this medical malpractice lawyer was not volunteering for unnecessary surgery. John became more ill; he was ashen. I changed my mind. I saw John just after my kidney was implanted; his skin was, miraculously, already pink. Giving John my kidney was the best thing I have ever done. I had given new life to someone I already loved. —Joan Saltzman. author of Mr. Right and My Left Kidney One Sunday I read a plea for help in our parish bulletin, a request from a young woman, Christine, for a kidney. After reading the letter and finding that I met the initial criteria, I leaned over to my husband and said, “I can do this.” My family and I met with the transplant coordinator and began the testing. After those meetings, our children gave us their blessing. It was a family gift to a person in need. At this point I still had not met my recipient. I decided to remain anonymous. The surgery went very well and a month later I was asked to talk to a potential donor. After listening to the woman talk about donating to her friend, I felt something missing in our experience and I e-mailed Christine, my recipient. We met on Mother’s Day, two months after our surgery. We developed an immediate and very close relationship, one that defies explanation. We are closer than friends are, different from family. My life was transformed by this awesome experience. —Marie Manley, a Transplant Assistant at Lankenau Hospital In 2010, I was going to donate my kidney to my husband. My antibodies weren’t quite a match, but they were a perfect match for a young man on the registry. A doctor at Georgetown in DC presented an idea of doing a huge swap. 32 of us—16 donors and 16 recipients—would participate. I would give a kidney and my husband would get a kidney, it just wouldn’t be mine. We didn’t know who was getting our kidneys until after the surgery. My kidney went to a young black man who had been born with just one kidney. His mother took part in the share and her kidney went to a 69 year old engineer of Indian decent. To see the diversity of ages and nationalities participating in this share was a moving experience; it was made possible because of a group of people determined to donate the gift of life to help a loved one, a friend or someone in need. —Patsy Semple, Kidney Donor and Advocate

Meet Our New Education Department Amanda Morton, Director of Drama School Jose Aviles, Director of Education Outreach It has been a thrilling first year in the Hamilton Family Arts Center, which – among many developments – provides a permanent home for Arden Drama School. With that in mind, we’re so excited to welcome Jose Aviles and Amanda Morton to our Education Department. Both bring a wide breadth of expertise as educators and artists, and will contribute to the ongoing cultivation of the Hamilton Family Arts Center as a hub for artistic process that celebrates kids and invests in the vitality of the community. Jose Aviles has been a Philadelphia-based theatre arts educator, administrator, and artist for over 20 years. He most recently was the Director of Education at Taller Puertorriqueño, and was an integral part of the education teams at the Wilma and Walnut Street Theatre. In his words: “I’m grateful for the opportunity to pursue one of my lifelong missions and beliefs that by connecting children to their cultural identity using the arts and the power of stories. It will ultimately empower, enhance engagement in learning, and connect them to world at large.” Amanda joins us “officially” after having spent the past year with the Arden as Teaching Artist. As a Music Director, you may have seen her as the Piano-Conductor of Parade. For Arden Drama School, she specialized in musical theatre technique for 9th through 12th graders, and helped cultivate our Teen Arden program. In her words: “My dream is to make the Hamilton Family Arts Center into ‘Hogwarts for Theatre.’ I’m looking forward to meeting and developing the community of parents, students, and teachers who have contributed to making the Arden Drama School program so unique and joyful. It is an honor to be tasked with filling a building that holds so much potential and good energy.” We look forward to an exciting season, and hope you’ll join us in welcoming new members of the Arden family!
WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
Every regional theatre needs a mission statement, a reason for being. Back in 1988, faced with the daunting prospect of drafting the Arden’s mission, we studied those of other leading theatres from across the country. We were especially drawn to Arena Stage’s mission, which stated that it was a theatre dedicated to “great plays by great playwrights.” We liked that this mission acknowledged a commitment to a broad range of work. So we stole it. Yet we made one very significant change. Since we knew that literary adaptations would be Terrence J. Nolen a cornerstone of our work, we revised the wording to state that the Arden would be dedicated to “great stories by great storytellers.” And since that time, from Dostoevsky to Dr. Seuss, great stories and novels have moved across our stage. When we announced that we were doing Great Expectations, a surprising number of people told me that was one of their favorite books, including Michael Norris, a long-time friend, former Arden staff member, and a leader in our cultural community. When I asked Michael why, he replied thusly: It’s a book about a boy that I read when I was a boy and full of all the hope and mystery of what the future held in store for me. Once I had plunged into Great Expectations it totally consumed me, not just because Pip’s journey was something I could imagine for myself but because all the characters are so indelibly drawn and fascinatingly human. Reading Great Expectations forever killed any hints of misanthropy I had blossoming inside my boy’s heart. And for that I am eternally thankful since I know my life has been richer because I’ve been able to accept the scars and quirks and baggage and secrets we all carry inside us. Michael is a great man, and I am deeply moved by the notion that Charles Dickens’ novel, written a century before young Michael picked it up, had such a profound impact on who he is today. That is the power of a great story: they stay with us, reminding us of who we are, and who we want to be. The Arden is dedicated to bringing to the stage great stories by great storytellers. Twenty-six years later, this idea still guides us. We may not have known much about mission statements when we first started the Arden, but we knew exactly what we wanted to do.

DIRECTOR’S Notes
Matthew Decker
Charles Dickens was a man of the theatre. As a young boy he formed a theatrical troupe with his classmates; at the age of 25 he joined the Garrick Club, a London private member’s fraternity founded so that “actors and men of refinement could meet on equal terms”, and he held lasting friendships with many theatre artists. Throughout his life Dickens loved to visit circuses and melodrama houses and his periodical writings often included stories of actors, waxworks, freak shows, fairies and clowns.
Before his writing gained attention, Dickens originally wanted to be an actor. Had it not been for a headcold on the morning of a scheduled audition at the Covent Garden theater in the early 1830’s, he may have made a career on the stage. His novels, though, are full of the theatre people that he met and observed: the theatrical troupe lead by Mr. Crummels in Nicholas Nickleby, the lisping circus proprietor Mr. Sleary in Hard Times, and – of course – Mr. Wopsle, the church clerk-turned- aspiring actor in Great Expectations who delivers quite the memorable performance as the Prince of Denmark. Even as a full-time novelist, Dickens never entirely left performance behind. Between 1853 and 1870, he did celebrated readings from his books – including a sold-out stop in Philadelphia in 1868 at The Concert Hall, then located at 12th and Chestnut Streets. Though it was a bitter January night with 18 degree cold, fans camped outside the theatre the night before tickets went on sale, and all six performances sold out in four hours. Dickens set his stage very carefully, with a dark-wine colored reading stand and white kid gloves, and annotated his “scripts” with dramatic stage directions. With his readings priced so low that the working class man and woman could attend, Dickens worked through a repertoire of 16 excerpts from his novels. This included an intense rendering of the murder of Nancy by Bill Sikes in Oliver Twist that was so ferocious and horrifying that his friend and biographer John Forster begged him to remove it from his rotation, for fear he might kill himself with the effort. The strong theatrical spine of Dickens’ stories allow his novels to transfer to the stage with great ease, and – as in Gale Childs Daly’s adaptation of Great Expectations – with verve and gusto. His characters play so beautifully on the stage because they are so indelibly drawn on the page. With 6 actors playing 40 characters traveling to over 20 locations, I think this production carries a level of theatricality that Dickens would have appreciated. Perhaps he would have had the urge to jump onstage and join in. Thank you for coming.

TRIVIA 1. Game of Thrones (spoiler alert!) Walter Frei murders the King and his entourage during the Red Wedding while they are visiting Frei’s home. What is the name of the King killed in Macbeth? 2. Breaking Bad In the second to last episode of the series, as Walter is standing next to his bunker, what Macbeth soliloquy does he reference? 3. House of Cards Frank and Claire Underwood (Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright) have been compared to what famous Shakespearean couple because of their love of power and focus on that goal above all else? 4. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban The Frog Choir sings “Double, double, toil and trouble,” which is recited by whom in Macbeth? 5. Hard Candy Cosmetics Their product “Out Damn Spot,” a concealer, was named after what character’s line famous line? Answers: 1. King Duncan; 2. “Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow…;” 3. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth 4.The three witches; 5. Lady Macbeth.
How Shakespeare’s Macbeth relates to pop culture
Ian Merrill Peakes will star as Macbeth. Photo by Mark Garvin.
Game of Thrones is an epic series that includes multiple people vying for power and rule. Much like the War of the Roses (chronicled in Shakespeare’s Richard II, the Henry IV cycle, and Richard III) Game of Thrones is bloody and filled with alliances and deceit. To name a few instances that have been related to Shakespearean ones: Lady Melisandre as the Lady Macbeth to Stannis Baratheon, urging him to kill for the greater good that will come from his rule once his opponents have been vanquished; Daenerys Targaryen as Joan la Pucelle, a female warrior in a man’s world; and the Targaryen children dying at the hands of Robert Baratheon which echoes the deaths of Macduff’s family by Macbeth.
The Atlantic noted a few similarities between Breaking Bad and Macbeth (October 2, 2013). The article compared Walter’s wife, Skyler, to Lady Macbeth for suggesting Walter kill another character to preserve their well-being. Another parallel noted that in both stories, the leading character is set on a course of events by an inciting incident. For Macbeth, it is his meeting with the witches when he hears their prophecy. Like the prophecy, Walter’s cancer diagnosis sets him on a course that ultimately leads to him turning into a ruthless criminal. The journey for power, an ever present theme in House of Cards, relates to many of Shakespeare’s plays. However, the leading character of Frank Underwood utilizes direct address to audience, a device used by two notable Shakespearean villains: the title character of Richard III and Iago from Othello. In a 2005 interview, J.K. Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, explained that for her, the prophecy Voldemort heard at the beginning of the series was patterned after the prophecy of the witches in Macbeth. Were the events that followed fated to happen? Or would they never have happened if that central character never heard the prophecy? In the early-mid 2000’s, Hard Candy Cosmetics created the concealer “Out Damn Spot” in shades named “Macbare” and “Macbuff.” The literary allusion to two of the main characters of Shakespeare’s work (Macbeth and Macduff) was the company’s only foray into Shakespeare’s world.
