WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director Welcome! Annie Baker is an extraordinary playwright. Still in her mid-thirties, she has been hailed as one of the most exciting playwrights of her generation and, in less than a decade, has received the Obie Award for Playwriting, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, the Steinberg Playwright Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Her plays are marked by their extraordinary attention to detail, her empathy for her characters, and her truly original point of view. Perhaps Annie Baker’s greatest gift is her ability to listen. She listens to how people speak: what they struggle to say and struggle not to say. She listens to how people try to connect: to their false starts, their fumblings and uncertainties. She listens to silence, recognizing that it can speak louder than words. And she asks us to listen: to distant voices from above; to the sounds of eating; to the whisperings of a house. With patience and rigor and compassion, Annie Baker cultivates listening and, in doing so, creates plays that are beautiful and challenging and unique. We’re very excited to be sharing her most recent play with Philadelphia audiences. We strive to produce a wide range of work here at the Arden. From Stupid F**king Bird to The Legend of Georgia McBride to John—three playwrights with wildly different points of view—to be followed by new productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Gypsy. Our goal is to bring to our stages the widest range of stories possible, and I’m thrilled by how we’re able to do that this season. It’s with this goal in mind that we are finalizing plans for 2017/18 – our 30th anniversary season. We’re not yet announcing the shows, but I can promise you that the plays and musicals that we will produce next year will represent writers with wildly different points of view and take you on five incredibly different journeys. As we look to next year, I ask you to become a Leap of Faith subscriber. Pease join us. Take the leap. Be part of the Arden’s 30th anniversary celebration of great stories.

DIRECTOR’S Notes When writing John, Annie Baker has stated that she was interested in a play that investigated the numinous. The world of Mertis’ bed and breakfast was born out of her pondering, where discussions of the divine and the occult feel like regular occurrences. These intimate discussions are observed by the numerous inanimate objects that populate the parlor of the B&B. The spiritual life of the inanimate object also is explored deeply in this play, both through Mertis’ collection of dolls and figurines and Jenny’s complicated relationship with American Girl Doll Samantha. Annie’s investigation was inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke’s essay “Some Reactions on Dolls.” Below is an excerpt from his essay: “[The doll] made no response whatever, so that we [as a child] were put in the position of having to take over the part it should have played, of having to split our gradually enlarging personality into part and counterpart; in a sense, through it to keep the world, which was entering into us on all sides, at a distance. It was silent then, not deliberately, it was silent because that was its constant mode of evasion, because it was made of useless and entirely irresponsible material, was silent, and the idea did not occur to it to take some credit to itself on that score, although it could not but gain great importance thereby in a world in which Destiny, and even God Himself, have become famous above all because they answer us with silence. At a time when everyone was still intent on giving us a quick and reassuring answer, the doll was the first to inflict on us that tremendous silence.” In meeting with the designers before we began rehearsals, we spoke frequently on how the specifics of the environment are integral to capturing the right feel to this story. All of the details of the set and props - from the tablecloths of "Paris" to the plate that the peanut butter fudge is served on - help us to understand, and fully recognize, Mertis. So to fully prepare for rehearsing John, I visited Gettysburg with my father, who, like Elias, is a Civil War buff. Mirroring Jenny and Elias’ travels through the town, we started at the Visitor’s Center, did an audio tour of the battlefields, had a drink at Dobbin House, and participated in a ghost tour. I peeked into many bed and breakfasts (which had a very similar floral couch in their parlor) and learned that like Mertis' home, these places served as makeshift hospital durings the battle. As we traveled through the landscape of the bloodiest battle on American soil, I was struck by it’s serene and melancholy beauty, and felt the energy of the nearly 50,000 men who by battles end were laying dead or dying after fighting for their country. The many ghosts tours available claim that the spirits of some of these soldiers still haunt Gettysburg, searching desperately for an understanding of their untimely demise, and I began to understand why Annie decided to set this play - filled with spiritual musings, deep wounds and great divides - in this hallowed town. Thank you for coming.

By William Shakespeare | Directed by Matt Pfeiffer We opened the F. Otto Haas Stage in 1998 with A Midsummer Night’s Dream directed by Aaron Posner. It was a remarkable production, featuring a set designed by David Gordon of floating beds and ladders that scaled the new heights this theatre afforded us. The Haas Stage was designed by the Philadelphia-based architectural firm Kieran Timberlake, who have since gone on to develop an international reputation, including designing the new US Embassy in London. The cast for that production was also remarkable, featuring actresses and actors who, in the almost 20 years since then, have become some of the Philadelphia theatre community’s leadTerrence J. Nolen, Aaron Posner, Amy Murphy. The Haas Stage, 1998 ing artists: Tony Braithwaite, Pearce Bunting, Jen Childs, Melanye Finister, Grace Gonglewski, Scott Greer, Leonard Haas, Ian Peakes, among others. These artists have helped shape what the Philadelphia theatre community is today. When Director Matt Pfeiffer started talking with Terry Nolen about doing a new production of Midsummer, he talked about how he was inspired by Aaron’s acclaimed production and by the acting ensemble who have gone on to create such extraordinary work in the years since. Says Matt, “One of the joys of working on Shakespeare is engaging with the history. These plays have been done for 400 years. They are foundational texts in Western culture. So I love engaging with that history. Thinking about the way Shakespeare and his company would've rehearsed the play. What tools they had at their disposal and how that translates to me as a 21st century theater artist. How can I tell the story in the spirit of the way the playwright wrote it for his company of artists. And part of that history is each individual play’s own production history. So when I started thinking about doing A Midsummer Night’s Dream for the Arden, it became very inspiring to think of this production as being in spiritual conversaBunting, Robert Christophe, Ian Merrill tion with Aaron's production. We sought to produce the play Pearce Peakes, Scott Greer, Grace Gonglewski, & with a new generation of outstanding talent in Philadelphia. Jennifer Childs. A Midsummer Night's Dream. Arden Theatre Company, 1998.

On the F. Otto Haas Stage | March 2 – April 9, 2017 Our production features galvanizing Philadelphia theater artists. My hope is that some of the magic that got kicked up in the Haas all those years ago still lingers and that our company carries it forward.” Our new production will feature music by Philadelphia artist Alex Bechtel, a 2015 F. Otto Haas Award nominee for his extraordinary body of work as a composer, musical director and performer. Matt and Alex have collaborated on several Shakespeare productions and, together, they are exploring ways that music can play a key role in bringing these plays to life. Says Matt, “I have sought to use live music as a way to welcome the audience into the play. In the way that Shakespeare often had musicians playing before and during the show, live music has a way of activating the poetry in the text, as well as keeping the live nature of the event palpable. Shakespeare didn't have the advantage of 21st century lighting and sound equipment. So to make the magic, they needed to find live and kinetic ways in performance. Music allows me and the company to add depth to the emotional and psychological experience of the characters. And just about every member of our company plays an instrument. So you'll see all of the actors in the company partaking in making the play happen. Which of course is the goal, to reinforce that we are here, in this room with you, telling this story.” Midsummer returns to the F. Otto Haas Stage this March. There are new heights to be scaled, new songs to be sung, and a new generation of theatre artists looking to bring this magical play to radiant life. Pearce Bunting and Melanye Finister.
