WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
Terrence J. Nolen
One of the best things about live theatre is that you, the audience, are actually a part of it. Every single performance is a little bit different. A movie will be the same if you watch it a hundred times, but a play changes. We are doing over 100 performances of The Jungle Book – and every single one of those performances will be unique in some way – never again to be repeated. That’s what makes it so exciting – anything can happen.
For every show that we do, we create an entire world to bring the story to life. And we like to bring you into that world. For The Cat in the Hat, you entered through a hallway (remember the framed pictures of Sally and her brother?) For Beauty and the Beast, with the help of projected shadows, you entered Belle’s dreams. For this play, we want to bring you inside of the jungle. We want the action to take place all over the place. We want you to be part of the story. This play is based on stories written by Rudyard Kipling. The playwright who wrote this play version is Greg Banks (who also wrote our plays of Robin Hood and Pinocchio). Our play version of The Jungle Book is a world premiere. That means that this is the first time that this play is being performed anywhere in the world. You are the very first kids to see this new play. We are excited that we are going to be producing another world premiere next season: Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates based on the book by Mary Mapes Dodge. Hans Brinker is about a brother and sister who live in Holland over a hundred years ago. In their town, there are canals filled with water, and people use boats to get around. But in the winter, when the water freezes, kids can skate on the canals all over the city. We want the set for Hans Brinker to capture the fun and freedom of ice skating – as if the entire play takes place on a giant sheet of ice. Our play Hans Brinker is written by Laura Eason. Laura has written many exciting plays for kids (she also writes for a television show called House of Cards that your parents or teachers might watch). We are thrilled that amazing writers such as Greg Banks and Laura Eason are writing new plays for us. From the jungle to the frozen canals of Holland, our plays take us to new worlds. But these plays could not happen without you. Thank you for being part of it.

DIRECTOR’S Notes
Matthew Decker
When I was a kid, my family had a membership to the Philadelphia Zoo. I loved walking through the house of cats, marveling at the majesty of the lions and tigers; laughing with the monkeys as they swung and climbed quickly up the trees; longing to jump into the pond with the hippos and splash around. I liked to use my imagination and pretend that I – like Mowgli in The Jungle Book – lived among the animals. The Philadelphia Zoo was the closest I ever got to the jungle, but it was a magical place for me to visit.
I really like to use my imagination. So much, that when I grew up and needed to get a job, I decided I wanted to become a theatre director. In making plays, theatre directors get to use their imagination all the time – so that was a perfect job for me! To make The Jungle Book, the actors, designers, and I have have spent a lot of time imagining what it would be like to live as an animal in the jungle. We asked questions like: how can we change the way we move as humans to move more like animals? What can we wear to look like a panther, monkey or snake? What can we do to transform the Arden’s theatre space to make it look, feel and sound like a jungle? It’s been a lot of fun, and also a great and exciting challenge. A man named Rudyard Kipling created Mowgli, Bagheera, Baloo and all the characters you see in this play. They first appeared in a collection of stories he wrote called The Jungle Book, which was published a long time ago in 1894. Walt Disney made an animated film version of the story in 1967, and there are TWO different live-action movies (with real animals!) being filmed right now. The play that you are watching today is a brand new version of The Jungle Book adapted by a playwright named Greg Banks. One of my favorite scenes in Greg’s adaptation features Bagheera, the Black Panther, teaching Mowgli the master words of the jungle – the code that every animal must abide by. She tells Mowgli that all of the animals – from the snakes on the ground to the four-footed hunters to the birds in the sky – are of one blood, and if Mowgli is ever in danger, he can use those words to ask for help. I think we humans have a lot to learn from the master words of the jungle. The idea that we are all connected – no matter what we look like, who we love, or what creed we follow – is a powerful one, and an idea that I hope to carry with me long after I leave the jungle. I want to extend special thanks to the cast, designers, production team for their work in bringing the world premiere of The Jungle Book to life. And thanks to you for coming to see our play. I’m really glad that you’re here.
