WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
This production of The Light Princess is a world premiere. That means this is the very first time this new musical has been done, and that you are the very first people in the world to see it. Pretty cool, huh? Our musical is based on a story written by a Scottish writer named George MacDonald (who was good friend of Lewis Carroll, the writer of the Alice in Wonderland stories). George MacDonald wrote his story in 1864, drawing on inspiration from another famous fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty. It was Tony Lawton’s idea to make The Light Princess a new musical, and he asked Alex Bechtel to write music for this new show. Both Tony and Alex are also in The Light Princess. Another first for us here at the Arden – the first time writers are also acting in the show they wrote. And, as you’ll see, they are terrific writers and actors. Though our musical is brand new, the story of The Light Princess has been around for over 150 years. So why has this story been told and retold for such a long time? I think it’s partly because we are all fascinated by the idea of lifting off the ground. What if you could be free from gravity? What would you do? Where would you go? George MacDonald once wrote, "I write, not for children, but for the child-like, whether they be of five, or fifty, or seventy-five.” I think this is another reason why this story is still being told. It can speak to all of us. I’m somewhere between the ages of five and seventy-five, and The Light Princess speaks to me. It speaks about the challenge of being different, and how we can connect with each other in spite of— or often because of— our differences. And it reminds me that we all want to fly! Thanks for coming. Thanks for being the first audiences to ever see Tony Lawton and Alex Bechtel’s new musical The Light Princess! Terry
P.S. Speaking of flying, I hope you’ll join us next year for one of the most famous flying stories ever written, Peter Pan. And next spring we’ll be doing a completely new version of Snow White – another world premiere!
DIRECTOR’S Notes I was recently introduced to some wise words from famed writer E.B. White, who knew a thing or two about writing for young people... "Anyone who writes down to children is simply wasting his time. You have to write up, not down. Children are demanding. They are the most attentive, curious, eager, observant, sensitive, quick, and generally congenial readers on earth. They accept, almost without question, anything you present them with, as long as it is presented honestly, fearlessly, and clearly." I don't think Tony Lawton and Alex Bechtel have been wasting their time. . . In this stunning new adaptation of George MacDonald's The Light Princess, they have written an entertaining, intelligent and beautiful new musical that is all about the "up." This show will challenge kids of all ages to not only look up and see a childlike Princess flying above their heads, but also to catch a glimpse of the person (and leader) she will be when she grows up. . . I remember the endless childhood days of building forts on the creek and tunnels in the snow and bike rides across town that felt like a cross-country adventure! I remember reading books to get free pizza and my mom bringing me Milky Way bars and Gatorade after cross country meets and the joy of a three-legged race on Field Day! But I also remember those days when it felt like the earth stopped turning. When the world seemed to be a much different place than I had thought. When it seemed the glory days of youth had ended and were becoming a thing of the past. Change truly is the only constant thing in life. A continual evolution toward becoming who we're meant to be. And although the fun-filled, stress-free, low-stakes days of childhood are things that I still long for almost daily (especially on some of my most hectic/ over-booked days), I am learning there is real magic to be found on the journey toward growing up. Magic of a totally different kind than I ever knew existed back then. But it's only because I once was a child that I'm now able to see it. . . The power and depth of fairytales never ceases to amaze. Onward and upward. . .

This could be you!
The Arden believes that every child deserves to be able to experience live theatre. That is why we created Arden For All. Through this Educational Outreach program, the Arden gives away 6,000 tickets a year to students who otherwise would not have access to theatre. We have partnerships with 12 schools in Philadelphia, PA and Camden, NJ. In addition to tickets, 2,000 third through fifth grade students also receive in-class lessons taught by Arden teaching artists. We are proud that Arden For All brings the arts (and brilliant teaching artists) and the thrill of live performance to so many children. We are thankful to all of the donors who make this possible.
You can help kids become artistically curious adults!
Please consider sponsoring one or more of these future theatre-goers by making a tax-deductible donation today. A gift of any amount will help cover the costs of the program. A gift of $90 will sponsor a student for a year. Donate at the box office or online at www.ardentheatre.org/support. Own a business in PA? Learn how your state taxes can support Arden for All through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC) at https://tickets.ardentheatre.org/Online/article/eitc.
