WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
When we first moved to this building in 1995, our motto was “Home is where the art is.” I’ve been thinking about this phrase again as we enter the final phase of construction of the Hamilton Family Arts Center, our new building located three doors down on 2nd Street. Since our inception, we have sought to create a home for artists, artisans, administrators, and audiences—and together we have done so. Last year we produced over 450 performances between our two stages and over 110,000 Terrence J. Nolen audience members attended an Arden production. As you read the bios in this stagebill, you will also notice that the Arden has been an artistic home for so many wonderful Philadelphia theatre artists; how Parade marks their 18th, 27th, and even, for designer Jorge Cousineau, his 50th Arden production. With the addition of this new building, our “home” just got much larger, and with that, we will dramatically expand the scope of our art and our reach into this community. Over the past few years, we have been raising funds as part of a $5.8 milllion campaign to make this dream a reality. To date, we have raised over $5.4 million. And now I am thrilled to report that we have been given a special opportunity by a couple who are long-time supporters. They are so invested in our future that they said, “What if a couple crazy about the Arden was willing to provide a challenge to inspire other people who love the Arden to help complete this campaign?” And thus the “Crazy Couple Challenge” was born. If we can raise $300,000 by this November when we officially open the Hamilton Family Arts Center, then they will provide the final $100,000—and the building and the campaign will be complete! We have until November to meet this challenge. The clock is ticking. . . Please consider making a gift. If you love our work—if you have been connected to our artists—please consider helping us at this time. You can make a gift using the pledge form inserted in this stagebill or online at ardentheatre.org/new. We believe in Philadelphia’s future; we believe that the arts can shape and even change lives. We need your help to make this happen. If “home is where the art is,” then the Hamilton Family Arts Center will enable us to be a home for so many more artists and artists-to-be. To reach more kids, expand our programming, and create even more exciting work on our stages. We hope that you will join us now in writing the next chapter of the Arden story. Thank you for being part of the Arden.
THE HAMILTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER A New Story Begins
The Hamilton Family Arts Center is a dramatic expansion of the Arden to better serve our students, artists, artisans and audiences. This new building will house our scenic, paint, and props studios, where we create the sets and scenery that you see in our productions. It will be a home for our new play development programs that fosters the creation of new plays and musicals. And, it will be the home of our education programs: for Teen Arden and for all the many kids who take part in our classes and camps.
The Hamilton Family Arts Center will be a center for creation and creativity. “I look forward to developing new work at the Hamilton Family Arts Center.” -Michael Hollinger, Playwright
“I can’t wait to be teaching kids in new classrooms at the Hamilton Family Arts Center.” -Bi Jean Ngo, Actor and Teaching Artist
“I’ve done 18 productions here at the Arden. I am excited to be rehearsing in the Hamilton Family Arts Center.” -Jeffrey Coon, Actor
We are close to making this dream a reality. The Arden has raised $5.4 million of this $5.8 million campaign. Please consider making a gift.
Now, more than ever, we need your help. Your gift
can help us finish this campaign and help us meet the challenge.
Join us in writing the next chapter of the Arden’s story. ardentheatre.org/new

THE HAMILTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER a new home for
Before the construction of the Hamilton Family Arts Center, Arden Drama School, which provides theatre education and training for kids Pre-K–12th grade, held classes in the Arden’s hallways, lobby and even in the conference room. Now, with the opening of this new building, there will be six classroom spaces specially designed for our students, including an art room for creating set and costume designs, a music room to learn songs, and a theatre space to perform their original scenes and plays.
The Hamilton Family Arts Center will be a home for kids. Thanks to a leadership gift from longtime Arden supporter William A. Loeb, it will be a home for all kids. Wally has founded the Arden Arts Education Fund that provides kids access to Arden Drama School classes and camps free of charge. His leadership has paved the way for the Arden to expand the number of kids we serve and encourage others to join in support of this fund. We believe that the arts can shape and even change lives. In the wake of the removal of arts education from many schools in this region, the Hamilton Family Arts Center enables us to provide a home for the next generation of artists and audiences. A place where they can build confidence and nurture their curiosity. A place for Philadelphia’s future. For information on Arden Drama School, visit ardendramaschool.com. Be the first to take classes in the Hamilton Family Arts Center.

THE HAMILTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER a home for
Teen Arden
Teen Arden is a program for teens who love theatre. Members of the Albert M. Greenfield Foundation Teen Council have unlimited access to the Arden’s artistic process, participate in master classes with top theatre professionals, and take field trips to other theatres and cultural institutions. They see all seven shows at the Arden – gathering for a dinner before the show and a Q & A with the actors, directors and designers. This program, in its inaugural year, has already become a vital and vibrant part of the Arden Theatre Company. Members of Teen Arden have performed a musical as part of our summer camp, worked as a part of our Box Office and Concession staff, and produced their own Fringe show. In the Hamilton Family Arts Center, a classroom will be designated as a home for Teen Arden. It will be a place where they will hang out after school. A place with a library of scripts of their favorite plays. A place where they can get help on their college essays from our grant writer and receive coaching on their college monologues from our casting director. A place where they can write their own scripts and produce their own plays. A place that will belong to Teen Arden -- where they can build their own artistic community that is not defined geographically, but bound by a common passion for theatre.

DIRECTOR’S Notes Parade tells the story of Leo Frank and a trial that took place 100 years ago in Atlanta, Georgia. Fueled and fanned by the media, the Frank case was sensationalized and scrutinized for a ravenous public. Passions were provoked; prejudices surfaced. The case became a tabula rasa on which different groups could project their own needs and fears, both real and imagined, speaking to a great divide that existed and to the larger issues and injustices that it revealed. The Frank trial captured the attention of the nation—and divided the country. Parade continues our commitment to audacious musical theatre. It is written by Alfred Uhry, an Atlanta native who also wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning Driving Miss Daisy, and Jason Robert Brown, a brilliant composer-lyricist. Like many contemporary musical theatre writers, Brown acknowledges his debt to the groundbreaking work of Stephen Sondheim, saying, “Had it not been for Sweeney Todd and Sunday in the Park with George, I would have probably joined a rock band and tried to be Billy Joel.” But working on Parade, I have also been struck by the influence of Leonard Bernstein, another musical theatre giant with a gift for melody and a soaring musical spirit, unafraid to bring a strong political perspective to his work. It is often said that musicals, like jazz and the blues, are a quintessential American art form. Parade continues to push the boundaries of the American musical, telling the story of Leo Frank, the community of Atlanta in 1913, and, ultimately, the story of our country. The Frank trial and its aftermath led to both the resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan, which had been largely dormant after Reconstruction, and to the creation of the Anti-Defamation League, a powerful defender of civil rights and social justice. A hundred years later, the reverberations and resonances of this story continue to be felt. A hundred years later, we still seek to address our national divides. I have wanted to direct Parade for over a decade. It brings together some of my great passions as a director: an extraordinary story, vivid theatricality, and a piece that balances the epic and the intimate; the political and the personal. But I have waited because I wanted to cast the perfect ensemble of actors to bring this story—and this magnificent score—to life. I am very glad I waited.
P.S. You can visit the National Museum of American Jewish History, located at 5th and Market, to find out more about Leo Frank. The museum includes an exhibition featuring a short documentary about the case narrated by Alfred Uhry—his mother’s uncle owned the National Pencil Factory where Leo Frank was the superintendent. You might also want to check out Jason Robert Brown’s new musical, Honeymoon in Vegas, currently premiering at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey and starring Philadelphia actor Rob McClure (papermill.org).

We stage five productions each season as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. We create and produce new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase and The Writers’ Room, a new play residency program made possible by the Independence Foundation’s New Works Initiative and the Pew Center for Arts and Heritage through the Philadelphia Cultural Management Initiative. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire community through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people. We also offer sign language-interpreted, captioned, and audio described performances, and Pay-What-You-Can final dress rehearsals that benefit other nonprofits. The Arden has received seven Philadelphia Magazine “Best of Philly” Awards, the Arts & Business Council’s Arts Excellence Award, five City Paper “Reader’s Choice” Awards, four Philadelphia Inquirer “Theatre Company of the Year” citations, 58 awards and 276 nominations from the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia’s Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, and was named “Best Theatre Company” by Philadelphia Weekly in 2009. The Blame Game:
Victims and Victimizers in the Reconstruction South Anti-Semitism in the Confederate South Jewish Americans during the Civil War divided their loyalties the same way as the rest of the country—largely by geography. There were Jewish troops fighting for both the South and North. Their willingness to fight for their fellow citizens didn’t protect them from bigotry, however. In the North, Ulysses S. Grant infamously expelled Jews from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi, though the order was rescinded a few days later. Meanwhile, Southerners blamed Jewish merchants for the shortage of resources because they could not blame the Confederate leadership. Rumors and stereotypes abounded: an 1863 letter from Georgia included the following: “Jews and other speculators constitute the traveling public…all eagerly bent on gain, and inquiring the price of cotton, tobacco, negroes, sugar [etc]. Thus the world goes!” This hostility continued through Reconstruction, which saw Southern Jews harassed, boycotted, and stereotyped. Leo Frank became the victim of some of the most pervasive ideas about Jews: in court he was painted with the stereotype that he was wealthy (he was not) and crafty. He was also damaged by the belief that Jewish men desire Christian girls, as evidenced by a 1915 account of the case in Watson’s Magazine, which asserted that: “Every student of sociology knows that the black man’s lust after the white woman is not much fiercer than the lust of the licentious Jew for the Gentile.”
Confederate Memorial Day
The U.S. Civil War brought a number of innovative ideas about the responsibility of a government to its soldiers, one of which was that the federal government would ensure the burial and/ or return of fallen soldiers’ bodies. However, following the surrender of the South, the government only took responsibility for the Union dead, even as federal priorities went towards rebuilding the damaged North. In addition to crippling economic measures, the South was on its own to reclaim and bury its soldiers. Southern women took up the call, and eventually started an annual day of remembrance, Confederate Memorial Day. This holiday, which pre-dated the national Memorial Day, often surpassed the latter in celebration in the South. Regardless, refusal to bring home the Southern dead was only one of numerous perceived disparities between the way the North and South were treated post-war. This treatment bred a deep resentment towards “Yankees” which would also, unfortunately, play into Leo Frank’s trial.

Leo Frank
Media Frenzy The Leo Frank case was situated at a time in American journalism in which the field was divided between the muckrakers, reporters who sought to expose corruption and yellow journalists who pursued scandal and sensational stories, often with a disregard for journalistic ethics. These two types of journalism were far from mutually exclusive. Examples of both can be found in the coverage of Leo Frank’s trial and its aftermath, which was referred to by contemporaries as a “circus.” Some papers, such as the Kansas Star, sought to shine a spotlight on the miscarriages of justice and provide a counter of the yellow journalism at work in Georgia, such as the Watson Magazine article quoted above: “They fixed the crime upon him in the public mind…They were too frenzied, too much controlled by bitter hate to sift the false from the true…” Newspaper accounts printed numerous falsehoods, dressed rumors up as facts, and printed sensationalist images of Mary Phagan and her bereaved family, whipping up hatred for Leo Frank and reflecting, and framing, public perception of Frank and the case. Up Next on the Arden Stage:
STICK FLY By Lydia R. Diamond
Directed by Walter Dallas
A juicy family drama unfolds during one summer weekend in Martha’s Vineyard. Let the fireworks begin. One summer weekend, the Levay brothers bring their girlfriends home to meet the parents. Between breakfast and board games, rivalries ignite, opinions flare, and secrets unravel. This juicy story grapples with issues of race and class, romantic entanglements, and the habits of insects. In addition to Broadway, Lydia Diamond’s work has been widely produced on the regional stages. Previous plays include Voyeurs de Venus, The Gift Horse, and an adaptation of The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. Directed by Walter Dallas (A Raisin in the Sun), Stick Fly challenges our understanding of first impressions and long-held assumptions in a play that veers between the comedic and the poignant.
Featuring: Joniece Abbot-Pratt, Jerome Preston Bates, Jessica Frances Dukes, Biko Eisen-Martin, U.R., and Juliana Zinkel
