A Message From Our Production Sponsor Family dynamics are a curious thing indeed. Families exist as their own structure made of people who share bonds and a sense of history – each has its own “corporate culture” so to speak. Whether your family set “cultural” expectations high or there were none at all, we each have to come to terms with our own identity drawn from the domain of family experience. Yet these natural ties are far from natural and get intertwined with our own self-image, expectations and unmet needs. The result is that those who are closest to us often wound Thomas M. Petro us most deeply and in ways that can be quite invisible and most likely buried for many years in the subterranean region of our psyche that dwells at the border of conscious and unconscious awareness. Rarely is there honest conversation about these things between the family members directly at issue; in some families speaking about one another is easier than speaking to each other. Hence, the scars and wounds and inner pains of family life can weigh on us in ways that we scarcely realize for decades or longer. Michael Hollinger’s world premiere of Under the Skin explores family dynamics. It is both funny and moving. And, as you would expect from a work by Michael, there is a surprise. After all, this is the way things go with families. Fox Chase Bank is proud to be the Production Sponsor for this new play, the 5th new work that we have been pleased to help birth on the Arden Theatre’s stage. We hope you are moved by this world premiere and that it just gets a little, well, under your skin! Cheers! Thomas M. Petro President and CEO Fox Chase Bank & Fox Chase Bank Charitable Foundation

HONORARY PRODUCERS

Fred and Emily Anton

Frederick W. Anton, III, is President and CEO of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers’ Association. He has been a supporter of the Arden since 1990 when the Arden created St. Stephen’s Alley at 10th and Ludlow Streets, next door to PMA’s headquarters in the former Federal Reserve Bank Building at 925 Chestnut Street. During that time, he founded and hosted the Arden’s Leadership Night, an annual advocacy event that introduced leaders of this region to the Arden’s plays and programming. These Leadership events played a key role in broadening the Arden’s base of supporters, as well as introducing new board members and key supporters. During those St. Stephen’s Alley years, Mr. Anton and PMA generously donated use of a building on Ludlow Street that served as the Arden’s rehearsal space and set and costume shops. In addition, Mr. Anton played a leadership role in the Arden’s move to our current facility in Old City. PMA’s Paul Luber used his real estate expertise and spent a considerable amount of time and energy working on the conversion of this building. For the transformative contributions to the Arden, in 2011 Mr. Anton was selected by the Arden Board of Directors to be one of the inaugural members of the Cornerstone Society, an honorary group of individuals who have moved the organization forward in a significant way. Mr. Anton acknowledges the role F. Otto Haas — the man for whom our mainstage theatre is named — played in his life and career. “Otto was my mentor. He was Chairman of the Board of PMA when I first became President. Otto and I worked together on political action for the betterment of Pennsylvania. We also shared a mutual interest in the arts — first with the Walnut Street Theatre and then for Arden Theatre Company.” Fred and Emily Anton are enthusiastic supporters of the Arden, having served as the Honorary Producers since the 2007/08 season. They are thrilled to once again support the work of Michael Hollinger, having been Honorary Producers for Hollinger’s Incorruptible (2014), Ghost-Writer (2010), An Empty Plate in the Café du Grand Boeuf (2007), and his translation/adaptation of Cyrano (2012). As a graduate of Villanova University, Mr. Anton admires Michael Hollinger’s commitment to the university in his roles as Associate Professor of Theatre and Associate Artistic Director of Villanova Theatre. Mr. Anton has long admired Michael Hollinger’s work and the artistic home that the Arden has provided for him. We thank Fred and Emily Anton for their ongoing extraordinary support of the Arden and for their great passion for great stories by great storytellers. Their tremendous support helps to make possible our work on the stage, in the classroom and in the community.

WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director

It’s thrilling to be kicking off the new year with a new play by one of the Arden’s most cherished collaborators, Michael Hollinger. As a theatre dedicated to great stories by great storytellers, we are committed to bringing new stories to our stage. How extraordinary to look at the list below and see the range of world premiere plays and musicals that have graced our stages throughout our history. Plays that premiered at the Arden have been subsequently produced across the country and internationally, including productions in Canada, Austria, Germany, Terrence J. Nolen Australia, the UK, and Japan. In the 2013/14 season alone, there were 50 different productions of scripts that premiered here at the Arden (fifty!). Since its Arden premiere in 2006, there have been 47 other productions of Opus (forty-seven!). These plays and playwrights are ambassadors for the Philadelphia theatre community, furthering our region’s growing reputation as a home for world-class artists and a hotbed for the creation of exciting new work. And these playwrights are investing in the next generation of writers. Michael Hollinger, along with playwrights Quinn Eli and Jacqueline Goldfinger, co-founded The Foundry, an organization dedicated to supporting Philadelphia’s emerging playwrights by providing opportunities for them to develop their craft, insight into the business of theatre, and networking opportunities. Playwrights remain fiercely dedicated to telling their stories — for the betterment of us all. Under the Skin marks our 37th world premiere in 27 years. My thanks to the writers who have entrusted us with their plays. To our supporters who have generously invested in their creation. And to you, our audience, for embracing the adventure of new work.

P.S. We are currently finalizing plans for the 15/16 season. We will let you know as soon as details are confirmed, but we do hope that you will take a “leap of faith” and commit to joining us next year (which will include another new play by one of our favorite playwrights). Details are on the back cover and in your stagebill insert. Thank you for being part of the Arden.

DIRECTOR’S Notes Working on Michael Hollinger’s plays, I have been introduced to people and ideas that I would otherwise not have encountered and have become obsessed with particular issues and topics that had not previously been of interest: bullfighting in An Empty Plate; the religious relics trade of the Middle Ages in Incorruptible; the struggle between commerce and conservation in the Galapagos Islands in Tooth & Claw. Opus allowed me to enter into the world of string quartets, and the rare privilege of sitting beside world-class musicians as they played Beethoven’s Opus 131 – as well as the ins and outs of safely smashing a violin for maximum effect. So when Michael told me that he had written this new play, my first question was, “What’s it about?” To which he replied, “Kidneys. And family.” As in the past, through Under the Skin, I have learned about a world of which I had previously been unaware: organ transplantation. I was introduced to the work of Gift of Life, an organization located just down the block at 3rd and Callowhill dedicated to organ and tissue transplantation and with whom we are partnering on this production (www. donors1.org). I met donors who gave the gift of life including Marie Manley, who decided to donate her kidney to an anonymous recipient after reading about it in her church bulletin, and Patsy Semple, who was part of an altruistic kidney chain in which 16 kidneys were donated to strangers (you can read more about their stories at www.ardentheatre.org/ transplantstories). In the United States, over 101,000 people await a kidney transplant, with over 5,300 people on the waiting list in our region. We need more Maries and Patsys. Though the subjects of Michael’s plays vary widely, there are themes that he has returned to throughout his work: his plays are about a group of people (be they monks or musicians or members of a family) trying to get by in a complex, contradictory, and often absurd world – and needing to connect with others in order to do that. “Write what you know,” the old adage goes. “Write from your imagination,” is the opposing response. We are fortunate that Michael Hollinger does both, introducing us to new worlds and asking us to open our eyes and look a bit more closely at the world around us. This is the 7th new play by Michael Hollinger that I’ve directed. I treasure the collaboration – and can’t wait to see where he will take us next.

From the PLAYWRIGHT The playwright’s journey is often a long one, and much of it must be traveled alone. So I am grateful to the following people for their help and good sense on the road to this play and production.

DINING PARTNERSHIPS at the Arden Over 75 restaurants have opened in Old City since we moved here in 1995. We are grateful for the many lasting relationships we have developed through our Dining Partner program that continues to strengthen our neighborhood. Below, a few of our Dining Partners share what it means to be a part of this program and our community. We hope that next time you visit the Arden or are in the neighborhood you consider dining at one of our Dining Partners. “A huge factor in choosing Old City as the location for Bistro 7 was certainly the Arden Theatre. As a subscriber I knew firsthand how consistently great the Arden’s performances were, as well as the loyal following they had created. Now, 10 years later, we still love seeing all of the Arden faces, and feel really fortunate to be able to be a part of a great evening of Arden theatre.” Michael H. O’Halloran – Bistro 7 “At Positano Coast we believe that working together and supporting one another is what keeps this area of Philadelphia thriving. We consider partnering with the Arden Theatre a privilege, and so providing ticket holders a discount for dining in our restaurant is our way of saying thank you and ensuring that more people know how much Old City has to offer.” Denise Earle – Positano Coast “Well developed characters build the best relationships onstage and in real life, sharing common values and interests. Our unique take on the Dining Partnership has inspired many fun ice cream twists on Opening Nights throughout the years, building a loyal after show business at our shops and fostering an authentic sense of community in Old City.” The Berley Brothers – The Franklin Fountain and Shane Confectionery “Our partnership with the Arden has helped us in many ways. Since we opened in 2000 the amount of Arden ticket holders that have dinner at Chloe before, and after the show, has grown every season. Many of our now regulars are season ticket holders and come to Chloe before every show.We look forward to seeing them every season and catching up when the Arden reopens in September. After the show there is always a lively discussion among patrons who have just seen the show, even prompting other customers and Chlöe staff to go see the show.” Mary Ann Ferrie – Chlöe See a full list of all of our dining partners on the opposite page!

An Interview with This spring, Ian Merrill Peakes returns to the Arden to play the title role in William Shakespeare’s masterpiece, Macbeth. Arden Associate Artistic Director Matthew Decker sat down with Ian to discuss his history with the Bard, Shakespearean dream roles, and his approach to playing the bloodthirsty Thane of Cawdor. MATTHEW DECKER: What was the first Shakespeare play you ever saw? IAN MERRILL PEAKES: My family ran a theater in Michigan called the BoarsHead and while I saw pieces of Shakespeare plays (including a Macbeth), my first full production I can recall was A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The fact that I could follow it was the memorable part - it was as accessible as any modern play I had seen. Ian Merrill Peakes will play the title role in Macbeth. Photo by Mark Garvin.

MD: What was the first Shakespeare role you’ve ever played?

IMP: I played Orlando in As You Like It and Roderigo in Othello at Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival in 1996. I also met my wife, Karen, that summer. Needless to say, I was hooked. On both of them, as it turns out. MD: You’ve played Macbeth before (in the Folger Theatre’s production in Washington D.C. directed by Arden co-founder Aaron Posner and Teller, of Penn & Teller fame). What excites you about tackling the role again? IMP: Just about everything. It’s a new cast and venue and director. But mostly, being able to take a second crack at any of the great classical roles is a thrill because there is no way you can mine all there is in one go. I got to play Iago [in Othello] twice, and I believe the second time had a bit more substance because I came in with some insider info on what made him tick. The [Folger Theatre’s] Macbeth was a co-production with Two River Theater Company in New Jersey, so I got to perform it one hundred times. Despite that, I still feel I have more to learn. I know some basic truths about Macbeth that I learned from the first attempt. I can’t wait to learn more. I have no interest in doing what I did last time, but I know some things that will surely inform this stab. Also, I’m almost seven years older, so naturally I should be seven years better. Isn’t that the way it works? MD: How do you prepare for a role like Macbeth? IMP: It’s set in Scotland, so scotch it is. I prepare as I prepare for any role, really. Reading the play quite a bit. Exploring the cuts [that the director Alex Burns has made of the text]; fighting to put some cut lines back, and fighting to have a few lines removed. I think, like with any great play, you just need to put yourself in the position of the character at the beginning of the story - which in this instance is pretty terrific - and ride the wave. While I have encountered very few prophetic witches on my own path, I have been faced with tricky decisions, and I have made some ill advised choices. But how thrilling to explore someone who was not able to hold back. MD: Shakespeare’s language isn’t necessarily familiar to modern ears. Does that play into how you perform the role? IMP: No way. The language just takes a little time to get used to. Some of the writing that would have been

clear to an audience from Shakespeare’s time, but not to ours, is wise to cut. Shakespeare was editing his plays constantly for his audience, and I’m a firm believer we should be cutting away what alienates us, language wise. An audience’s ear, especially smart audiences like we get here in Philly, will adapt quickly. It is crucial for the actors to start the play with as much clarity as possible, and then everyone can say ‘I’ve got this, and on we go.’ MD: This play is about a lot of things – ambition, fate vs. free will, kingship – but at the center of the play is Macbeth’s fall from grace. Despite the fact that our central character goes through a most tragic end, this play is mounted over and over again. Why do you think we keep returning to this piece? IMP: Because it’s so thrilling, and because there seems to always be the possibility Macbeth will pull himself together and all shall be well. Who knows, maybe that’s what we’ll do. The language is phenomenal, the witches are magical and fearsome, the pace is muscular. And the play can be funny. Not A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum funny, but, yeah, it has real humor. Perhaps gallows humor. And then there’s the truth of the situation. If we were all told our potential futures, how would we behave? Oh, and power. Power is a strange and nasty addiction, especially in the world that this play creates. If you are told you will be king and it is taken away from you, how do you react? But, my personal favorite part of this play is that Macbeth is a good man at the beginning. And the tragedy is his, not his victims. Watching a good man fall apart, and then realize his horrible mistakes, is thrilling.Yeah. So, is it clear I think it’s thrilling? MD: Very clear. Speaking of thrilling, that’s a great way to describe the roller coaster relationship of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. IMP: They are a dysfunctional team, to say the least. The power balance that continuously shifts throughout the play is delightful to play and explore. She seems so fully in control, or is she? And when that team is broken, as Macbeth descends into self-loathing and desperate machinations, leaving her out of the decision making, Lady Macbeth’s lack of a hold on reality becomes all too apparent. MD: What do you think Macbeth’s understanding is of the supernatural? IMP: The supernatural was such a part of the framework of society at that time. They had no internet to verify authenticity, or fact check. Howls in the night could prove to be as easily a demon, as a strong wind through a hole in the barn. So, while I think it’s more interesting if he has never actually laid eyes on a witch before, he would certainly be aware of what they might be upon meeting. But when they address him and tell him inexplicable truths, his understanding, of them and everything else is forever distorted. MD: Is there a Shakespeare role you’re dying to play that you haven’t yet? IMP: I don’t know. Are you casting? There are roles I expect to engage with later, like Claudius in Hamlet. Titus. Perhaps even Lear. But as for now, I’m just lucky to have done over twenty Shakespearean productions with as many fabulous folks as I have. I feel like I’m dying to play Macbeth again — although, perhaps dying is an unfortunate word to use around that play. My boy, Owen, was percolating around in Karen when we did it last time. (Karen played Lady Macduff). So, to be tackling this awesome beast and knowing that Owen’s now engaged with the world and with me, and how much that alters me, and therefore my performance as Macbeth, makes me down right giddy. MD: Thank you, Mr. Peakes. We look forward to the production. IMP: Me too. Thanks.

Macbeth runs March 5th - April 19th on the F. Otto Haas Stage.
