We have much to celebrate as this new year begins.

After three and a half years of planning, designing, fundraising and building, we have officially opened the Hamilton Family Arts Center. This beautiful new building will house our ever-growing educational programs and new play development activity. We have also successfully completed the capital campaign to make this expansion possible. My sincere thanks to everyone who came together to make this building happen, with a special thank you to campaign Co-Chairs N. Peter Hamilton and Lee van de Velde and the Arden Board of Directors for their leadership, tenacity and hard work. This building is our investment in the future: a place for new plays, new artists, and new discoveries.
I am also proud to share that Philadelphia playwright Michael Hollinger will be our 2014 Writers’ Room Playwright in Residence. Michael is writing a new play called The Kidney Play, and, over the next year, we will be holding workshops and readings of this play (in the new Hamilton Family Arts Center) as Michael writes (and re-writes) his new work. Michael Hollinger is one of the Arden’s most treasured collaborators, and we are extremely excited to be embarking on the creation of this new play with him. And finally, we are thrilled to kick off 2014 with the Philadelphia premiere of Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Water by the Spoonful. This is the second play in a trilogy that follows an Iraq veteran, Elliot Ortiz, as he returns to Philadelphia after the war. The first play in the trilogy, Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue, was produced at the Walnut Street Theatre Studio in 2009, and the final play, The Happiest Song Plays Last, is currently being produced OffBroadway by Second Stage Theatre in New York (www.2st.com). All three plays of The Elliot Trilogy are set in Philadelphia, and together, they explore the notion of family and community while deftly depicting Philadelphia’s locations, aspirations, quirks and grudges from a place of deep knowledge and affection. Growing up in Philadelphia, Quiara took advantage of our region’s rich cultural offerings: she studied music at Settlement Music School, had her first play produced by Philadelphia Young Playwrights when she was in high school, and “after Quaker meetings on Sunday mornings… would frequently walk down the Parkway and enjoy free admission to the Art Museum.” She was nurtured and inspired by Philadelphia’s cultural community – and now she returns to her hometown a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright. All kids deserve to have the arts as part of their lives. The arts can build confidence, teach discipline, and foster creativity and connection. It can help kids find their voices and sing their own songs. It is our hope that the Hamilton Family Arts Center is a place where kids can do just that. And so we begin this year with a new building, new plays, and a renewed commitment to stories by and for Philadelphians. Much to celebrate indeed! Thank you for joining us on this journey.

THE HAMILTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER A new story begins NOW OPEN at 62 N. 2nd Street
On November 15, 2013, we were joined by Mayor Michael A. Nutter, Arden friends, staff, and board members, and Arden Drama School students to officially cut the ribbon and open the Hamilton Family Arts Center! Thanks to the incredible support of our community, we also completed our $5.8 million capital campaign. We are grateful to all of the individuals and funders who provided financial support, to our board for their leadership, and to our incredible Capital Campaign Co-Chairs N. Peter Hamilton and Lee van de Velde. The renovation of the building was designed by Richard Conway Meyer Architect, implemented by C. W. Schwertner and Sons, and overseen by our magnificent Facilities Committee, led by chair H. Hetherington Smith. Thank you to all of those who talked to friends, colleagues and neighbors to share the news of our expansion, especially our dedicated group of Hamilton Family Arts Center Ambassadors. The Hamilton Family Arts Center includes six classrooms, a rehearsal hall, a studio theatre, and a crafts studio. For kids and families, the Hamilton Family Arts Center is the new home for our classes and camps. The building is also the place where artists will develop new plays, rehearse shows, and create the sets for our productions. We are excited to welcome Arden Drama School students and our artists and artisans to this incredible new facility. Each and every one of you who made a gift in support of the Hamilton Family Arts Center helped to make this dream a reality – and for that we are so grateful. We hope you will stop by the building when you are in the neighborhood; we love giving tours of our new space!

Quiara Alegría Hudes’ The Elliot Trilogy Water by the Spoonful is the second in a trilogy of plays that follows Elliot Ortiz upon his return to Philadelphia from active duty in Iraq. But between throwing out the first pitch at the Phillies game, mad media buzz, and some healing juju from his mami’s urban garden, his leg wound has opened a haunting realization. Has he been walking in his pop’s and grandpop’s footsteps unknowingly his whole life?
The Happiest Song Plays Last Monday, March 10th at 7pm In a barrio living room in North Philly, an activist-turned-music professor moonlights as the local soup kitchen queen, cooking free rice and beans for any hungry neighbor. Halfway around the world, her cousin relives his military trauma on the set of a docudrama that’s filming in Jordan. With the Egyptian revolution booming in the distance, these two young adults try to sing a defiant song of legacy and love in the face of local and global unrest. I can’t tell you what a particular thrill it is for my work to “come home.” Though I live in New York now, Philly pulses through my veins, it is the rhythm in which I was born and raised. Have I become a New Yorker? Let one thing be clear: my children are being raised as Eagles and Phillies fans.
When I think of Philly, I think of soft pretzel stands and squatters, water ice and founding fathers, I think of Abuelas who journeyed from the old world to this new one, writing declarations of independence in humble kitchens as they fed poor neighbors. I think of border streets like Girard Avenue and Baltimore Avenue, streets that somehow evolved as invisible separators between haves and have nots. Philly is splendor and inequity side by side. Philly’s histories and skin tones, the screams and secrets emanating from her sidewalk, her angry, resonant fierce voice offered me so much inspiration as a child constantly hungry for stories. It is a city of brilliant, often overlooked, individuals with stories just begging to be told. And so this play was born. We take so much for granted as we walk the streets of this city, it’s so easy to forget the promise of this nation, written locally in our founding documents, as we rush to the Septa train or grocery store. But I hope in this play you will find the deep love, the raucous laughter, the bold contradictions, the late-night screams and songs, and the stifled but not squashed voices from a city I love so well. I must thank my cousins – every single one of them – but in particular Othet and Elliot, for the thumbprints they left on this particular story. Though it’s a work of fiction – and I must emphasize, this play is not based on autobiographical facts – there are emotional truths in the play I learned from these younger and older cousins of mine. Finally, thank you, audience member, my long-distance neighbor, for helping this writer’s dream come true: my stories have finally come home. Quiara

Previously, her play Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue was a Pulitzer Finalist, and her most recent play, The Happiest Song Plays Last, premiered at The Goodman Theatre and is currently running at Second Stage Theatre in New York. Hudes wrote the book to the Broadway musical In the Heights, which premiered off-Broadway and earned the Lucille Lortel Award and Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. In the Heights transferred to Broadway where it received the Tony Award for Best Musical, a Tony Nomination for Best Book of a Musical, and was named a Pulitzer Finalist. Hudes wrote the book and lyrics for a children’s musical, Barrio Grrrl!, which premiered at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and toured nationally. Hudes was born and raised in Philadelphia, where she recently returned to receive a Resolution from the City of Philadelphia. After graduating from public school in Philadelphia, Hudes went on to receive a B.A. in music from Yale University and an M.F.A. in playwriting from Brown, where she studied with Paula Vogel. Her first play was produced in the tenth grade by Philadelphia Young Playwrights, where she now serves as a board member and mentor to other young writers. His short film The Personal Touch was nominated for an Emmy Award. AMY L. MURPHY (Managing Director) A Philadelphia native, Amy co-founded the Arden in 1988 with Terrence J. Nolen and Aaron Posner. She is especially proud of the Arden Professional Apprentice program and its contribution to the Philadelphia cultural community. A graduate of Susquehanna University, Amy received the university’s first-ever Young Alumni Achievement Award. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders-Arts which is a joint program of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Center for Social Innovation and National Arts Strategies. Amy serves on the Board of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance and Theatre Philadelphia. She has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council, Theatre Communications Group and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. She has also served on the Executive Committee of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT) and the Local Advisory Council of the Non Profit Finance Fund. Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College.
Who’s Who ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers–on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community. We stage five productions each season as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. We create and produce new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase and The Writers’ Room. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire community through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people, and our Arden Arts Education Fund provides scholarships for Arden Drama School classes and camps. We also offer sign language-interpreted, captioned, and audio described performances, and Pay-What-You-Can final dress rehearsals that benefit other nonprofits. In 2013, we opened the Hamilton Family Arts Center. The Arden has received seven Philadelphia Magazine “Best of Philly” Awards, the Arts & Business Council’s Arts Excellence Award, five City Paper “Reader’s Choice” Awards, four Philadelphia Inquirer “Theatre Company of the Year” citations, 58 awards and 276 nominations from the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia’s Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, and was named “Best Theatre Company” by Philadelphia Weekly in 2009. three sisters Profile on set designer Eugene Lee “Nothing makes me happier than an impossible space and an impossible project.” -Eugene Lee Eugene Lee is one of the most prolific set designers working in the American Theater. Throughout his remarkable career he has been bestowed multiple honors including three Tony Awards for the original production of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide, Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd and the musical Wicked. We are thrilled to have Eugene design the set for the Arden’s upcoming production of Three Sisters. Eugene’s set designs are known for their unique, admired technique of changing spaces and using the stage to its full potential. When he designs a set, he often redesigns the theatre, repositioning exits, lights booths, even walls to accommodate the play. He has stated that when designing a set “I prefer walking into an empty space and creating from there.” Terry Nolen spent time studying Eugene’s 1973 landmark design of Candide when planning the Arden’s environmental staging of Sweeney Todd and Pacific Overtures. The Arden’s reconfiguration of our theater spaces based on the needs of each individual production was inspired largely by Eugene Lee’s work. When it comes to set design, Eugene Lee, to put it simply, is a force. His early education included stints studying at the University of Wisconsin, the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh and the Art Institute in Chicago before eventually ending up at the Yale School of Drama. Meanwhile, a friend, director Andre Gregory, offered him a job at his new theatre in Philadelphia, called the Theatre of the Living Arts, located on South Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets. “So for a while, I was commuting back and forth from Philadelphia to New Haven,” he said. “I didn’t mind – working was more fun than school.” Eugene and Andre worked on many productions together at the TLA, and in its short existence the theater carved out a name as one of the most vital, controversial and mostwatched theaters in America. Their infamous production of Samuel Beckett’s Endgame in 1966 featured a set made out of found materials that Lee built himself. The production, though, met with a divided and controversial response from critics and audiences in Philadelpha, ended up touring the country with re-mountings at Yale and in New York. After the demise of the TLA in 1967 (it still stands on South Street, now coverted into a concert venue), Eugene, at only 28 years old, became the resident designer at Trinity Repertory Company, a regional theater in Providence, Rhode Island. He remains in that position today and calls Providence his home.
While in residence at Trinity and designing projects in New York City, Eugene got a call from a young producer named Lorne Michaels and “accidentally” fell into television. Michaels had seen and loved Candide and wanted Eugene to serve as the Production Designer for a new show he was creating called Saturday Night Live. Thirty-nine years later, Eugene still designs for the show. “Over the years whenever I felt [Saturday Night Live] has lost something, a feeling that we have wandered off our original principles—I turn to Eugene to restore the balance. He is the keeper of the flame with me—the true heart of the show” says Lorne Michaels. Eugene Lee’s list of longtime collaborators reads like a who’s who of the contemporary theatre. In addition to working with Andre Gregory he has also worked with legendary stage directors Hal Prince, Adrian Hall, Peter Brook and Michael Lindsey-Hogg as well as film directors Francis Ford Coppola, John Houston and Louis Malle. His career also includes a rich regional theatre presence, as well as multiple Emmy nominations for his work on other television programs.

Between now and March (when Three Sisters begins performances), Eugene is designing a new set for Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show takeover in February, working on the world premiere of a new Athol Fugard play, The Shadow of the Hummingbird, at New Haven’s Long Wharf Theatre next spring, and designing for a new musical from Jonathan Lethem’s novel Fortress of Solitude co-produced by the Dallas Theatre Center and the Public Theatre in Manhattan. Oh, and one other big project looms on the horizon – designing a new set for Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary next year. The signature Grand Central Station set that established a 10year record for longest-used SNL set “will need to go.” “It’ll be traumatic,” he admitted, “because that one is kind of settled in. But it’s been around too long, and it’s good to shake things up.” In terms of slowing down? “I don’t see any retirement. If they stop calling me, then it’s over. If you stop doing things, you die. Michael Hollinger, Playwright-in-Residence Arden Theatre Company is excited to announce Philadelphia playwright Michael Hollinger as the 2014 Writers’ Room Playwright-in-Residence. The Writers’ Room, the Arden’s new play development residency, invites audiences to follow a playwright as they develop a play from page to stage. Instrumental in developing Philadelphia’s reputation as a home for writers, Michael has written seven plays that premiered at the Arden: Ghost-Writer, Opus,Tooth and Claw, Red Herring,Tiny Island, Incorruptible and An Empty Plate in the Café Du Grand Boeuf. Michael also translated and co-adapted the Arden’s 2011 production of Cyrano. These plays have enjoyed numerous productions nationally; Opus, which premiered at the Arden in 2006, went on to become one of the most produced plays of 2009. Michael’s work has also been seen abroad in London, Paris, Athens, Poland, Slovenia, and, most recently, in Tokyo this fall. This season will end with a new production of Incorruptible which first premiered in the Arden’s 95/96 season. About his work with the Arden, Michael says: “Since we began our collaboration nearly 20 years ago, my plays, and the Arden’s commitment to producing them, have helped establish Philadelphia as a major national center for the development and production of new work. These plays…and my commitment to educating people about process have helped cultivate audiences in this city for new work. When I travel around the country, for readings, workshops or productions, I become a kind of “ambassador” for Philadelphia’s vibrant arts and culture scene. And the plays travel without me, sometimes very far, yet always linking back to their place of origin.” Michael will be in residency with the Arden developing his new piece, The Kidney Play, in preparation for its premiere as part of the Arden’s 2014/15 season. Set in Philadelphia, The Kidney Play is a comedy that considers what we owe our parents and our children. Through our Inside the Writers’ Room program, audiences can observe Michael’s process as he develops The Kidney Play with Arden staff and artists. Audiences will be invited into Michael’s process through a selection of special events including conversations with the playwright, open rehearsals, and public readings. The 2014 Writers’ Room offers a unique opportunity for behind-the-scenes access during our spring production of Incorruptible, a dark comedy from earlier in his career. Interested?
