From the Producing Artistic Director Welcome to Ragtime and the launch of our 2019/20 season.

The music and lyrics for Ragtime are written by the extraordinary team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and, come spring, we will close this season with another Ahrens/Flaherty musical, Once on This Island. Part of the beauty of doing two of their musicals in one season is to see the extraordinary range of their work and how they bring their remarkable artistry to two very different stories.

In between these two productions, we will stage the Philadelphia premiere of Nia Vardalos’ adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s Tiny Beautiful Things, the world premiere of Lorene Cary’s My General Tubman, a new production of Tennessee Williams’ masterwork, A Streetcar Named Desire, and, in the intimate Bob and Selma Studio Theatre, two powerful one-person productions: An Iliad featuring Mary Tuomanen as well as No Child... featuring Taysha Canales. As always, we will be producing two Arden Children's Theatre productions: The Snow Queen, directed by theatrical wizard Whit MacLaughlin and the return of our acclaimed production of Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat. We have a great year ahead - nine remarkable stories across our three stages. Thank you to all of our subscribers for taking the leap and investing in our work. Teatro del Sol is on a “mission to preserve the Latin tradition of telling stories by producing and presenting new, contemporary, and classical Latin theatrical works for Filadelfia’s diverse community.” After seeing their production of La Gringa last year (and loving it), I felt Arden’s partnership with this exciting new company would continue our commitment to working with other theaters and artists who are telling great stories. Finally, I want to congratulate all of our artists from last season whose work was recognized with this year’s Barrymore Award nominations. To all of the nominees - and to everyone who works with such passion and commitment to make Philadelphia a vibrant theater community congrats on such remarkable work. A Message

From our Honorary Producers When his novel Ragtime was published in 1975, E.L. Doctorow likely had no idea that the trials and tribulations he depicted in early 1900’s New York would still reverberate in 2019: immigration backlash, racial injustice, gender inequality.

The Arden has once again selected a show for our time, setting a mirror before us to reflect on who we are and where we want to go; reminding us that, despite the passage of a century, we are still working to transcend our history and transform our future. Joy, despair, outrage, hope – prepare to experience a rollercoaster of emotions.

But it also wouldn’t be an Arden-produced musical without ingenious staging and breathtaking talent. The Arden consistently delivers shows that both entertain and challenge, and this production is no exception. Dazzling performances, thought provoking themes, reimagining what theatre can and should be – it’s what the Arden, now in its 32nd season, continues to achieve.

Director's Note E.L. Doctorow's Ragtime is an epic work of historical fiction set in the first decade of the 20th century. It depicts the country at a time of change: when Model T Fords were rolling off assembly lines, the Wright Brothers were taking flight in Kill Devil Hills, and silent movies were flickering to life on screens across America. Change is everywhere in this story, with its characters, and the country itself, moving boldly into the future.

Doctorow wrote his novel in the mid-1970s during the Watergate era and the final years of the Vietnam War. Once again, the country was in the midst of great change, with institutions and long-held assumptions being investigated and challenged. And the ethos of that time informs how Doctorow views his characters -- as he knows what lies ahead.

The musical version of Ragtime opened on Broadway in 1998. Like the novel, it was an epic and ambitious production, born in the era of large-scale, sung-thru musicals such as Les MisĂŠrables and The Phantom of the Opera. That production was directed by Frank Galati, one of my professors at Northwestern University. Frank was one of the most inspiring teachers I've had and our mission to tell great stories by great storytellers was inspired in part by Frank's fierce passion for adapting literature to the stage. Yet, I wasn't compelled to produce Ragtime at the Arden. It seemed too large; too sweeping a story for our stage.

And then, last year, I reread the script. Suddenly, I saw this musical as a story of its time and, as with all great works of art, a story of our time. I recognized these characters -- their yearnings and successes as well as their sufferings and thirst for justice. And I realized how so many issues raised in Doctorow’s novel continue to challenge us today. Ripped from the headlines (or from the tweets, as it were), I was caught up in the politics and the humanity of this story.

It has been an honor working with this company of artists and artisans to bring this production to life, here, in Philadelphia, on the F. Otto Haas Stage in 2019. Throughout rehearsals, I've been thinking about the notion of change and progress -- the dream of hope and change -- and have been continually struck by how much has changed, and how little. Of course, no one knows what the future will bring, but in looking back and seeing how our county has tried and often failed to change, I somehow see more clearly where we are now.

Working on this production, I've also thought about my parents quite a bit. They came of age in the 50s and had a family of seven children by the early 70s. Throughout the years, they embraced change while navigating the inevitable challenges and loss that life can bring with grace, a healthy dose of humor, and a commitment to moving forward. They were open about their doubts and concerns -- thoughtful about which legacies to pass on to their children and which to let go of.

ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers–on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community. For the 18/19 season, Arden Theatre Company will stage seven productions as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. We create and produce new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays.
