Peter Pan has been around for over a hundred years. He was created by J.M. Barrie, a Scottish writer who lived in Victorian England.

There have been many different versions of Peter Pan. He has appeared in films, as a cartoon character, and in a famous musical where he was played by a woman. J.M. Barrie wrote a screenplay for Charlie Chaplin to star as Peter in 1920, which would have been a silent movie (before movies had talking and sound), and there were plans for a version to star Michael Jackson in the 1980s. One of my favorite versions is a 2003 movie that stars Jason Isaacs (the actor who plays Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movies) as Captain Hook. My family has watched it a dozen times (sometimes on the same weekend). Again and again, storytellers have been drawn to this story of “the boy who would not grow up”. Our version of Peter Pan is a new play created by Douglas Irvine, a Scottish writer who runs a theatre for kids in Scotland called Visible Fictions. Douglas Irvine went back to the original novel for inspiration. He created a script that is true to J.M. Barrie’s story but brings it to life in an entirely new way. When we start working on a production, we have to figure out what it is going to look like. It’s an exciting time when we let our imaginations run wild. Our costume designer, Richard St. Clair, suggested that this production be inspired by something called “steampunk.” Now Richard has designed costumes for seven Arden Children’s Theatre productions and won the Barrymore Award for his costumes for A Year with Frog and Toad and Sleeping Beauty. He’s very smart and very talented. When Richard makes a suggestion, you listen to him. The more we researched steampunk, the more it made sense. Steampunk is inspired by 19th century Victorian England (when J.M. Barrie first wrote Peter Pan) but it combines that with fantasy and modern styles. The recent film Golden Compass is an example of steampunk – combining fantasy and history with a love or gadgetry and fantastical sci-fi machines. Steampunk is fun and inventive and very cool. Perfect for our retelling of this classic story. It’s been over 100 years since Peter Pan first showed up at the Darling family’s window. Since that time, so many kids have traveled to Neverland with Peter Pan. Now it’s your turn. Let me know what you think.

DIRECTOR’S Notes What is the difference between a child and a grown-up? Well, let me ask you these questions: Who is older? A child or a grown up? Who is bigger? A child or a grown up? Who is hairier? A child or a grown up? Who knows more? David O’Connor

Who has more responsibility? Who has more imagination?

You know what imagination is, right? It is something like the power to make believe. A laundry basket is a house, or a pirate ship! Your shadow is a machine or an animal! And any object can become a friend to play with. Peter Pan is the child who will never grow up. Maybe that is because his imagination is perfect. To him, there is no difference between what he imagines and the real world. He imagines the world exactly how he wants it, and then makes everyone else play along. Do you know anyone like that? Are you like that? In a play, we ask the actors and the audience to imagine together. The actors will imagine they are pirates or children. We will ask you to believe piles of junk are actually little boys. We will imagine adventures that are both fun and scary, like a crocodile that you can only hear and not see. We will imagine what it is like to ﬂy. The more we all believe together, the more fun we will all have, and the more the spirit of Peter will be with us. Children are better at imagining than grown-ups. If you are here with a grown-up, see if you can help them imagine. Good luck!

David is also the creator/producer of Johnny Showcase and the Lefty Lucy Cabaret, which took the 2009 Philly Fringe by storm with its hit Purr, Pull, Reign: A Litigious Fantasy in D. Who’s Who ZACHARY PALLADINO (Assistant Puppet Designer) tries his darndest to work as an animator, illustrator, and puppeteer. Zac most recently finished designing and building puppets for B. Someday productions’ The Good Puppet of Szechwan at Walkingfish Theatre (www.Walkingfishtheatre.com). Zac received a BFA in animation from Emerson College in Boston and has had his animated work screened at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. LESLIE ROGERS (Assistant Puppet Designer) is a Philadelphia based artist and puppeteer. She received her B.F.A from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. She is a member of Puppet Uprising, a collective presenting new puppetry and experimental theater from local and touring companies. Leslie works in a variety of media including fibers, painting, sculpture, installation, video, and performance. She performs regularly with a number of puppetry companies and designs puppets, props, sets, and costumes. SARAH OLLOVE (Assistant Director/Dramaturg) is excited to be back at the Arden following her work on The Seafarer and The History Boys. Sarah is a freelance dramaturg and holds an MFA in dramaturgy from the ART/MXAT Institute for Advanced Theatre Training. In addition to her work at the Arden, she has enjoyed working with the ART in Cambridge, Signature Theatre in New York, and Woolly Mammoth in DC among others. STEPHANIE COOK (Stage Manager) is excited to be back at the Arden after stage managing last season’s Gee’s Bend and Something Intangible. DOUGLAS IRVINE (Adaptor) is the Artistic Producer of Visible Fictions. His work has been performed across Scotland, England, Ireland, Denmark, Germany, Canada, and the USA. Under his leadership, the company was the first Scottish theatre company to perform on Broadway. He has also collaborated with Seattle Children’s Theatre and Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis, and has directed at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and the Polka Theatre in London. He loves telling stories in new and exciting ways – with puppetry, dance, video, and foley artistry. He created a radio/theatre crossover piece with BBC Radio and directed for BBC television’s Panorama. His production Jason and the Argonauts, with a cast of actors and toy action figurines, toured the US in Fall 2009 through Spring 2010. DAVID O’CONNOR (Director) remembers writing a story about a rabbit who did somersaults in second grade, which earned him a trip to the Governor’s house to read it. 25 years later, he still loves telling stories by making theatre. David has directed for the Arden, the Lantern, Philadelphia Young Playwrights, Temple University, Hedgerow and others. He studied lighting design at Ithaca College with Tom (the set designer) and then five years ago came to Philadelphia to go to Temple University for a Masters Degree in directing. Because Philadelphia is full of great theatres like the Arden, and great artists like Frank X (who plays Captain Hook), David and his wife Karyn decided to stay. Now they have a house, a dog named Jackson, and a 5-month old son, Zachary. David loves working with this group of actors, designers, stage managers, technicians, administrators and apprentices who makes this show happen.

TERRENCE J. NOLEN (Producing Artistic Director) is co-founder of Arden Theatre Company. Favorite Arden productions include all-Philadelphia casts of All My Sons, Death of a Salesman,The Grapes of Wrath and Hedda Gabler and such musicals as Sweeney Todd, Paciﬁc Overtures, Falsettos, Violet and Caroline, or Change. Terry directed the inaugural production of Arden Children’s Theatre, Charlotte’s Web. He has directed six world-premiere plays by Michael Hollinger, three by Dennis Raymond Smeal, Michael Ogborn’s Baby Case, and Bruce Graham’s Something Intangible. Terry has been nominated for 23 Barrymore Awards for his directing work at the Arden and received awards for The Baker’s Wife, Sweeney Todd, Opus,Winesburg, Ohio, Assassins and Something

Who’s Who Intangible. He directed Michael Hollinger’s Opus at Primary Stages in New York and was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Director. His short film The Personal Touch was nominated for an Emmy Award. AMY L. MURPHY (Managing Director) A Philadelphia native, Amy co-founded the Arden in 1988 with Terry Nolen and Aaron Posner. She is especially proud of the Arden Professional Apprentice program and its contribution to the Philadelphia cultural community. A graduate of Susquehanna University, Amy received the university’s first-ever Young Alumni Achievement Award. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders-Arts which is a joint program of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Center for Social Innovation and National Arts Strategies. Amy has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council and the Executive Committee of the League of Resident Theatres (LORT). Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College. ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life the greatest stories by the greatest storytellers of all time. We stage five productions each season as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. Why We Support the Arden Our family loves great books and great plays. Reading a great book sparks our imagination, transports us to other time periods, and immerses us in situations we may never have experienced. Watching a great play does all the same things and more. When we see a story brought vividly to life, we lose ourselves in the tale unfolding upon the stage. A great play can leave us feeling so many different emotions: lighthearted, uneasy, exhilarated, and even more. We may ﬁnd ourselves thinking about it for hours afterwards, even days. We began subscribing to the Arden eight years ago. We enjoyed the professionalism of the work and saw every play in our subscription. We started to bring our children with us when they were 14 and 11. We didn’t just take them to Children’s Theatre, but also to shows like Sweeney Todd, A Midsummer Night’s Dream,The Seafarer, and Caroline, or Change – just to name a few. Seeing these plays together has led us to have spirited discussions as a family. Three years ago we decided to increase our support of the Arden. We joined the Sylvan Society and began to support Arden for All. Through Arden for All, we give children the chance to have the same transformative experiences our kids have had at the theatre. It is important work because, without Arden for All, these children may never have the chance to attend a theatrical performance. Live theatre can open a child’s mind to new ideas and new knowledge. It allows them to dream and see worlds beyond their own. Seeing great plays is as essential as reading great books. How ﬁtting that every child who sees Peter Pan through Arden for All also receives a copy of J. M. Barrie’s book! This year we are pleased to be fully supporting the Arden’s partnership with Camden Creative Arts High School. Our gift pays for 25 tickets to If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, bus transportation to the Arden, and a visit from a teaching artist to lead a Master Class for the students. We hope other Arden supporters in the audience today will consider joining the Sylvan Society and supporting Arden for All. We cannot think of a better way to share the power of great storytelling--on the page and on the stage – with the young people in our region. Did you know that some plays are years in the making? We are working on a brand new play called The Flea and the Professor. Here’s a sneak peek of how this play is taking shape.

Later this season, the Arden is producing William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.  If you have a teenager in the family, this production is a great introduction to the world of Shakespeare.  Romeo and Juliet, directed by Matt Pfeiffer (who directed Go, Dog. Go!) runs February 25th - April 11th.  Our version will be a modern interpretation of the play that we hope will be relevant to teenagers as well as adults.  The themes of love and hate are timeless, and this familiar story is integrated into our collective conscience.  Our goal is to tell this story in a fresh and exciting way.  Watching Shakespeare can prove challenging to teenage audience members.  (We recommend this production for 8th grade students and older.)  But Romeo and Juliet is a great “first” Shakespeare experience because it addresses themes that your teenager can identify with.  Young love!  Raging hormones!  Rebelling against your parents!  Plus, did we mention that there’s a wicked awesome sword fight?  Cast as Romeo is Evan Jonigkeit, who recently played Dakin in The History Boys.  I talked with him about his first experience with the play: “I was introduced to Romeo and Juliet in 8th grade. When my teacher had me read Romeo aloud for the first time, I realized the importance of standing up for what was right in my heart. Romeo’s daring awakened in me an understanding of my own individuality. I hope to illuminate to others that being who you are is the only path worth taking.” A great way to enhance your teenager’s Romeo and Juliet experience is to enroll them in our Romeo and Juliet Spring Break Workshop.  Held on March 31st, it is an all-day Shakespeare workshop on speaking and performing the text, as well as a lesson in stage combat!  This workshop will be taught by Evan Jonigkeit, who plays Romeo, will take place on the set of Romeo and Juliet, and includes a ticket to the 2pm performance.  For more information on the workshop, visit our new Drama School Website, www.ardendramaschool. com. Do you know who Hans Christian Andersen was? He was the author of many fairy tales that you may have read like The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling and The Emperor’s New Clothes. Some of his stories have been turned into movies or plays that you might have seen. One of the last stories that Hans Christian Andersen wrote was called The Flea and the Professor. And the Arden likes that story so much that we’ve asked a man named Jordan Harrison to turn that story into a play. The Flea and the Professor is about a man who travels the world with his special friend who is a flea. They perform magic tricks, meet strange and unusual people on an exotic island, and fly in a hot-air balloon! Last winter, we asked some of our favorite actors to read Jordan’s play aloud. After hearing it, he thought it would be great to add some music to the play. So we asked composer Richard Grey to write songs for our new play. In May, the Arden will be working on this play at a big festival called New Visions, New Voices in Washington D.C. The Arden is one of seven theatres in the whole world that were picked to be a part of the festival. This gives Jordan and Richard a chance to work with other artists to make their play even better. Once it’s ready, we can’t wait to share The Flea and the Professor with you!

How familiar are you with the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie? We read it when we were little! Mom read it to us. I think it was when we were in ﬁrst grade. But we still like it. How come? There’s A LOT of action. Plus there’s a problem. Problems are important in stories. Why? Cause that makes them fun. And interesting. And sort of dangerous. The book is pretty simple but the play takes the action and makes it more sophisticated. I think the play escalates the danger aspect of this story. Cool! I mean this mouse destroys the boy’s house. Literally destroys everything. He’s a sincere and innocent mouse but he’s a wrecking ball. Like a tornado? Yeah…what’s the messiest thing that’s ever happened in our house? Oooh, remember the Barbie installation? Or when the faucet in the kitchen blew up and water was gushing out everywhere? So which one of you would be the boy and which one of you the mouse? I’m the mouse. Yeah, she is. What do you think the play’s got to include? The part where the mouse drinks the milk. Why? Because the milk is SO HUGE and the mouse is SO LITTLE. So it’s all about scale. And chaos. It’s reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy. Or Charlie Chaplin. Who? Never mind. What do you think the moral of the story is? Never trust a rodent.
