WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
When we put together seasons, I avoid overarching themes. I want the work we produce in any given season to be as varied as possible: new work, reimagined classics, musicals, adaptations. I love when productions speak to similar ideas over the years - such as A Raisin in the Sun after Clybourne Park, and following last year's Macbeth with this season's Equivocation - but we have always avoided overarching themes that tie a season together. Yet, as we began this current season, I realized that there was a strong theme that resonated throughout this year's productions: the notion that change is inevitable and transformation is possible. The metamorphoses of Ovid's tales; Shagspeare transforming history into art in Equivocation; Funnyman's Chick Sherman reinventing his career and his relationship with his daughter; an era of change for the Hill District and its citizens in Two Trains Running; and now, a musical that promises that no matter how long winter lasts, spring is coming. That's one of theatre's great strengths: it can remind us of the deeper truths that we know but of which we sometimes lose sight. And that is the power of Marsha Norman's and Lucy Simon's brilliant musical The Secret Garden; it reminds us, in glorious song, that even in our darkest times, transformation is possible. As we end this season, we are deep into planning for next year. No theme as far as I can tell, but five incredible stories that we are burning to tell. Aaron Posner's acclaimed Stupid - - - Bird, one of the most produced plays in the country and hailed by LA Weekly as "The best Chekhov adaptation in two decades." Matthew Lopez's fierce and funny new play The Legend of Georgia McBride, featuring Dito van Reigersberg of Martha Graham Cracker fame (hailed by Philadelphia Inquirer as "The Drag Queen King of Philadelphia"). The beautiful new play John by Annie Baker, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright who is one of the most exciting writers of her generation, which will feature Carla Belver, who memorably brought Violet Weston to life in August: Osage County. A vibrant new production of A Midsummer Night's Dream that will fill the Haas Stage with music, magic and Philadelphia's most exciting up-and-coming artists. And, this time next year we'll end the season with the legendary musical Gypsy with Mary Martello as Mama Rose. Frank Rich referred to Mama Rose as "Broadway's own brassy, unlikely answer to King Lear." I don't know about you, but I want to see Mary Martello's King Lear. HONORARY PRODUCERS Fred and Emily Anton Frederick W. Anton, III, is Chairman of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers’ Association. He has been a supporter of the Arden since 1990 when the Arden created St. Stephen’s Alley at 10th and Ludlow Streets, next door to PMA’s headquarters in the former Federal Reserve Bank Building at 925 Chestnut Street. During that time, he founded and hosted the Arden’s Leadership Night, an annual advocacy event that introduced leaders of this region to the Arden’s plays and programming. These Leadership events played a key role in broadening the Arden’s base of supporters, as well as introducing new board members and key supporters. During those St. Stephen’s Alley years, Mr. Anton and PMA generously donated use of a building on Ludlow Street that served as the Arden’s rehearsal space and set and costume shops. In addition, Mr. Anton played a leadership role in the Arden’s move to our current facility in Old City. PMA’s Paul Luber used his real estate expertise and spent a considerable amount of time and energy working on the conversion of this building. For the transformative contributions to the Arden, in 2011 Mr. Anton was selected by the Arden Board of Directors to be one of the inaugural members of the Cornerstone Society, an honorary group of individuals who have moved the organization forward in a significant way. Mr. Anton acknowledges the role F. Otto Haas — the man for whom our mainstage theatre is named — played in his life and career. “Otto was my mentor. He was Chairman of the Board of PMA when I first became President. Otto and I worked together on political action for the betterment of Pennsylvania. We also shared a mutual interest in the arts — first with the Walnut Street Theatre and then for Arden Theatre Company.” Fred and Emily Anton are enthusiastic supporters of the Arden, having served as the Honorary Producers since the 2007/08 season, and like the Arden, have a great passion for great stories by great storytellers. They are thrilled to support The Secret Garden. We thank Fred and Emily Anton for their ongoing extraordinary support of the Arden. DIRECTOR’S Notes I have been interested in The Secret Garden since its original Broadway premiere in 1991. The role of Dickon was played by John Cameron Mitchell, who lived across the hall from me during my freshman year at college, so I was excited to follow the development of the show (John created even greater excitement when he went on to write and star in Hedwig and the Angry Inch). I was intrigued that Marsha Norman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright for her searing 'Night Mother, was making her first foray into musical theatre by writing book and lyrics for the piece; she has since then become quite expert at creating musicals out of literary sources, having also done The Color Purple and The Bridges of Madison County. I didn't know the composer, Lucy Simon, except that Carly Simon was her sister. I loved the show. This is a musical with great heart and an extraordinary score, one that is thrilling and exquisitely beautiful. But I never considered directing it, as I was more interested in demon barbers and pointillist paintings at the time. It is the score that kept bringing me back to The Secret Garden. Over the years, whenever actors would sing from this show at auditions, I would be reminded of its power and beauty, and ask them to sing the song from start to finish. A few years ago, I remember walking backstage and hearing Jeff Coon sing selections from The Secret Garden in the Green Room, his clarion voice soaring with the music; again, I was struck by its tremendous power. And though I hadn't heard it, from the moment I met her, I could imagine the power of Alex Keiper singing "Move On." This is a score that needed to be heard. I now have two sons, and of course, being a parent shifts how you see the world. It certainly deepened my appreciation for this story -- and my need to bring it to our stage. Though beloved by children for generations, The Secret Garden, and this musical adaptation, examines the most profound questions: How do we make sense of the unthinkable? How do we dare risk connection when loss is inevitable? Not surprisingly, the ache that exists in this story was borne of experience: Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote The Secret Garden after the death of her 16-year old son. This story and the questions it asks move me deeply. And I love the score more than ever, for it remains exquisitely beautiful and has the power to take me deep inside myself. It's been thrilling being in rehearsals for this production, surrounded by such a remarkable group of artists, living inside of this story, hearing this music every day. I am very excited to share this production with you and to hear this glorious score fill our theatre. I am also excited to share this Secret Garden with my sons, to experience this story through their eyes. During rehearsals for this production, my Assistant Director Amanda Schoonover texted me a photo that she took while walking to rehearsal. It was a sign in a garden outside of South Philly High that read: "To grow a garden is to believe in tomorrow." A perfect sign for this piece. For that's what we strive to do, isn't it? As artists, as teachers, as parents -- to believe in tomorrow. Be optimistic -- for all great things spring from hope.

Who’s Who LUCY SIMON (Music) is the composer of the musical Zhivago which had its premiere at La Jolla Playhouse. She made her Broadway debut in 1991 as the composer of The Secret Garden, for which she received Tony and Drama Desk nominations, the Drama-Logue Award and a Grammy nomination for the recording of the score. She received two Grammy Awards for her In Harmony albums, which she co-wrote and produced. Ms. Simon wrote songs for the film A Simple Wish and contributed songs for the long-running review A... My Name is Alice. She began her professional career at the age of 16 with her sister Carly as part of The Simon Sisters. MARSHA NORMAN (Music & Lyrics, Book) is the winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize, Blackburn Prize, Hull-Warriner, and Drama Desk Awards for her play 'Night, Mother. In 1992 she won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for her book for the Broadway musical The Secret Garden. She also wrote the book for the Broadway musical, The Color Purple, for which she also received a Tony nomination. Her play, Master Butcher’s Singing Club, premiered at the Guthrie Theatre in the fall of 2010. She won a Peabody Award for her writing on the HBO television series In Treatment starring Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Wiest. Her most recent work is the adaptation of The Trumpet of the Swan: A Novel Symphony for Actors and Orchestra, with music conducted and written by Jason Robert Brown. The CD has been released by TRW and PS Classics. Her other plays include Getting Out, for which she won the John Gassner Medallion and the American Theater Critics Association Citation; Third and Oak:The Laundromat and The Pool Hall;The Holdup;Traveler in the Dark; Sarah and Abraham; Loving Daniel Boone,Trudy Blue; and Last Dance. LARRY LEES (Orchestrations) is a composer, lyricist, orchestrator, and conductor, whose major works include the original musicals: Jonestown, 16 Days, and Wonder Pig; as well as the operatic work, Obesa Cantavit. His award-nominated work has also been featured in numerous plays, circuses, and concert evenings – and is frequently performed in some of the country’s leading music venues.
