WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director

We remember our teachers. Especially the great ones.

Terrence J. Nolen

My kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Sand. She was such a great teacher that, after I had her, my mom asked that all of my younger brothers and sister have her as well. And so Pat, Kevin, Colleen, Michael and Mary Nolen all had Mrs. Sand for kindergarten. One of the things that made Mrs. Sand such a good teacher was that she treated each child as an individual. She encouraged each kid to develop his or her own unique gifts. Mrs. Sand is now 95 years old and no longer teaches kindergarten, but she spent a lifetime teaching kids and working to be the best teacher she could be. Think of how many kids whose lives were touched by Mrs. Sand.

I want you to do something. I want you to ask an adult who their favorite teacher was and why. You can ask your mom or dad – or even your own teacher. I think you will find that everyone has at least one favorite teacher. And if that teacher was really special, ask the adult to send them a note or call them to say thanks. We just opened the Hamilton Family Arts Center – our new building located just three doors down the block (look for the bright red sign). It has 6 classrooms, 2 lobbies to hang out in, 2 studios in which to build and paint our sets, a big rehearsal room, a small theatre, and 8 bathrooms. All of these rooms are on two floors and one basement (we did not build a “sideways” building like Wayside School), and there is so much that we can do in this great new building. The play you are about to see was rehearsed at the Hamilton Family Arts Center. The set for Sideways Stories... was built and painted at the Hamilton Family Arts Center. And, most importantly, the building is the home for Arden Drama School – all of our classes and camps will be held at the Hamilton Family Arts Center. Come check it out! We built this building for you. We put a quote on the wall of the new building. It’s from a show we did called Merrily We Roll Along by Stephen Sondheim. Here it is: This is where we began Being what we can. That’s our dream for the Hamilton Family Arts Center: that it’s a place where you can begin to figure out what you want to be. I think that’s what great teachers and great schools should do. Welcome to Wayside School! And come check out your Hamilton Family Arts Center.

DIRECTOR’S Notes I want to make up a new word to describe Wayside School. Something akin to “topsy-turvy”. I like the word topsy-turvy. It means confused or disorderly. Life often seems topsy-turvy to me. Head over heels. Upside down. Tumbling through space. Disconnected from reality. Whit MacLaughlin

But I don’t think that Wayside School is topsy-turvy. Wayside School is not disconnected from reality. It is not confused about itself. It is not disorderly. It knows itself. In some ways it is really real. It’s just messed up. Messed up because it has a really bad teacher. Messed up because it has a principal who doesn’t really care. Messed up because there’s a cow, and a teacher who haunts the school. It has a classroom thirty stories in the air because an architect accidentally designed the building to be built on its side. (We took the idea of a sideways room literally.) Wayside School is not COMPLETELY wrong, it’s just…sideways. To give someone “side eyes” is to look at them so they can’t see you looking. So you can evaluate them. And maybe disapprove of them. Side eyes are sneaky. And looking at something from the side reveals something. Gives you a new perspective. Reveals crucial features. For example: looking at Wayside from the side reveals that the students on the 30th Floor really care about each other. Reveals that those students want to learn. That they CAN learn in the right environment. Shows what a good teacher does. And is. So I propose the obvious. Wayside School is “sidewaysian”. Something that’s sidewaysian is askance, partly wrong-partly right. Slanted. Off-kilter. Like Philadelphia. Or our country. Or maybe your school. Oh. One more thing that I don’t want to look at from the side. I want to look head-on. Teachers. There are bad teachers, of course, but there are so many good ones! I want to honor a few of my own that were “Jewls” in my hometown of Kansas City, Missouri: Mrs. Livingston. Miss Soebing. Mr. Ashcroft. Mr. Martin. And many more. I was blessed to have good teachers in my life. I honor them all even if they can’t hear me now.

ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS The SET DESIGNER for Sideways Stories from Wayside School imagined that this is what a sideways classroom would look like:

Think about your room. What do you imagine that it would look like if it were sideways? Draw it here:

THE HAMILTON FAMILY ARTS CENTER A new story begins NOW OPEN at 62 N. 2nd Street

This is an exciting time for the Arden because we just held the Grand Opening of the new Hamilton Family Arts Center. We invited some of our friends – Arden Drama School kids and teachers and Philadelphia’s Mayor Nutter – to help us celebrate by cutting a big red ribbon (when you open a new building, you often cut a ribbon just like when you open a present). This new building is a place for kids like YOU who love theatre and stories. Over the past three years, we have put in a lot of work to make this a special place. With the help of architects, contractors, and construction workers, we renovated an old building into a bright new space with classrooms to teach acting and singing and improv and art and so much more. After the show, check out the Hamilton Family Arts Center. Walk out the door of the Arden, turn left (towards Arch Street), and walk about 70 steps (that’s not as far as it sounds). You’ll see a red sign that says: Hamilton Family Arts Center. That’s it! And if you want to take a class there, check out the Sideways Stories... poster (you’ll get it after the show). You can find out even more information at www.ardendramaschool.com.

COMING THIS SPRING:

Children’s Theatre Season Sponsor:

At the Arden, one of our favorite things to do each year is to find stories to tell on our stage for kids just like you. This spring, we are very excited to present The Cat in the Hat based on the book by Dr. Seuss. The Cat in the Hat is one of our favorite stories and we’ve asked some of our favorite artists to work on this play. Steve Pacek – who is onstage right now as Mrs. Gorf in Sideway Stories AND played Prince John in Robin Hood AND played the Mouse in If You Give a Mouse a Cookie – is going to be the director of this play alongside Doug Hara – who played the Blue Fairy in Pinocchio AND the dragon Gryff in Sleeping Beauty AND M.C. Dog in Go, Dog, Go! We asked both of these guys to direct because they love making plays for kids just like you. A director is a leader – like the conductor of an orchestra or the coach of a sports team. As directors, Doug and Steve get to imagine what the set will look like, decide what costumes the actors will wear and choose the actors to be in the play. They have already decided on some of the actors – Charlotte Ford, who played Maid Marian in Robin Hood, will be the wild and crazy Thing 1 and Doug will get to play the Cat in the Hat himself! How cool is that? Right now Steve and Doug are brainstorming how the Cat will create a big mess onstage, perform an amazing balancing act while bouncing on a ball, drive around his cleaning machine, and make Thing 1 and Thing 2 will jump out of a box. How would you do it? Be sure to check out The Cat in the Hat when it starts performances in April. We can’t wait for you to see it!
