WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
It all started three and a half years ago when a special opportunity presented itself: the building a few doors down from us on 2nd Street was for sale. It was spacious, structurally sound, and answered so many of our needs: A home for Arden Drama School and our ever-growing educational programming. Terrence J. Nolen
An after-school place for teens to call their own under the auspices of Teen Arden. Scenic studios for our artisans to build and paint the extraordinary sets you see on our stages (complete with running water and bathrooms – lacking from our previously rented space). A beautiful rehearsal hall in which to rehearse our plays AND a small studio theatre for readings and experimental work.
And so we leapt - a well-reasoned leap of faith, but a leap nonetheless. The economy was troubled; significant resources needed to be raised; the time, energy and expertise of so many would need to be enlisted to make this project a success. But we had faith: in our kids; in the potential for theatre to change lives; in the power of community; and in this city’s future. Over the past few years, we’ve been planning and designing and fundraising. Countless hours were invested in making sure that this building met our needs – now and into the future. My sincere thanks to everyone who has come together to make this building happen. The Hamilton Family Arts Center is a testament to your dedication, tenacity, generosity and courage. Thank you. Now we are beginning to fill this new building with life. This set you see before you was built and painted in the new scenic studio. The actors rehearsed this play in the new rehearsal hall. Kids are in the classrooms and running down the hallways. The Hamilton Family Arts Center is our investment in the future – new plays, new artists, new discoveries. Now (to paraphrase Tony Kushner) the great work has begun. With this production of Stick Fly, I am thrilled to welcome back Walter Dallas (who directed last season’s A Raisin in the Sun) and to introduce the work of playwright Lydia R. Diamond to our audiences. Throughout our history, we have been drawn to plays that tell the story of the American family by playwrights who include Tracy Letts, Lorraine Hansberry, Arthur Miller, Eugene O’Neill, and August Wilson. I’m thrilled to add Lydia to that list and to share the contemporary voice of this important new playwright. Thank you for joining us. And check out the new Hamilton Family Arts Center.

Teen Arden
Chioma Dunkley at a Teen Arden event. Photo by Plate 3 Photography.
Teen Arden is an all access program for high school students who love theatre. Launched last year, members of Teen Arden have quickly become a vibrant part of Arden Theatre Company – attending weekly after-school acting classes, working in the Arden’s box office, and even writing and performing their own play as part of this year’s Fringe Festival. A goal of Teen Arden is to provide these passionate teens – the next generation of artists and audience members – the tools they need to foster a life filled with curiosity, creativity and confidence, whether they choose to pursue a career in the theatre or not. Chioma Dunkley, a member of our inaugural year of Teen Arden, is now a freshman theatre major at the University of Maryland. While Chioma was applying for college, she attended Teen Arden programming to help prepare for her college auditions and applications. She had this to say: “Teen Arden gave me the opportunity to practice my college audition in front of the Arden artistic staff, which I have to say deep down inside I didn’t want to do it because I was crazy nervous! But they really encouraged me and not only was their feedback great, but from that practice audition I got the courage to seek out others to practice my monologue in front of. Let’s just say I got in, and got a scholarship! I have to say that the most special and beneficial part of Teen Arden for me was the Teen Arden College Panel Night. It was great meeting artists who went to different schools and majored in theatre. It seriously inspired and encouraged me to not minimize myself and really reach for my dreams no matter how high they may be and no matter how young I may be.”
Now in its second year of programming, Teen Arden will continue to provide help with the college application process – a question and answer session with local college admission directors, private audition coaching with our Artistic staff, and and working on their college essays with our grant writer. Do you have a teen in your life? If so, please share with them this page. They can find out more about upcoming events and workshops by liking TEEN ARDEN on Facebook or by emailing Bryan Kerr, Education Associate, at bkerr@ardentheatre.org.

From the PLAYWRIGHT I was working on an intense, difficult play, called Voyeurs de Venus, which was about an enslaved person. I was spending a lot of time in the library, crying over horrendously racist accounts of what black people looked like to the Europeans in the early 1800s, and just sobbing. And I needed to do something fun when I wasn’t losing my mind over that. Stick Fly was going to be my fun play. The themes I wanted to explore had to do with my relationship to white women. I have all of these very good white friends who are like sisters whom I love, but outside of my circle I still feel a tension. That’s interesting, Lydia R. Diamond because I’m also a feminist, and if I’m going to have visceral negative reactions socially to a person it should be white men, and I found that I bumped heads most often with white women. I wanted to explore that, because it’s a contradiction and a really interesting one. Also, in my personal life there is always this search for father and what that means, and it was very much a part of what the play is exploring – relationships with fathers. The setting and the story comes out of the characters, so I made the characters first. Then they tell me where they live and what’s happening with them. That’s how Martha’s Vineyard happened. I didn’t say: “I’m going to write a Martha’s Vineyard play.” This is where they live and these are the things that they were dealing with. Martha’s Vineyard is the perfect place for exploring the intersection of race and class dynamics outside of the black community and within the black community. There is a way in Stick Fly that the family can’t really sit down without at some point, very organically, having a discussion about how they navigate and exist in a world that is tricky to navigate and exist in as a person of color. That’s the experience I have in any group of African Americans anywhere in America. The way we don’t know how to acknowledge the uncomfortableness and inequalities that are personal and institutional makes the very nature of racism so tricky. The only way that you can deal with it is to have other people to process through it with, and so that becomes very much a part of the world of the family.

Quiara Alegría Hudes
Meet Quiara Alegría Hudes
Playwright of Water by the Spoonful The Arden’s upcoming production of Water by the Spoonful, onstage January 16 - March 16th, centers on a Philadelphia family. Scenes are set throughout the Philadelphia region and beyond, with locations including a diner on Spring Garden, a Subway shop on the Main Line, and Swarthmore College. This 2012 Pulitzer Prize winner was written by Quiara Alegría Hudes, who grew up in West Philadelphia and attended Central High School. The Arden’s Literary Manager, Sally Ollove, asked Hudes about the inspiration for her work and her Philly roots.
Sally Ollove: Water by the Spoonful is the second in a trilogy that follows a Philadelphia family coming to terms with its past and its future — why a trilogy as opposed to a single piece? Quiara Alegría Hudes: I am very inspired by August Wilson’s Century Cycle. The scope and breadth of American life he covers is unparalleled. I believe in seeing or reading all ten plays one learns so much about the fabric of our country — our spirit, our fears, our soul, our music, our fury. I would love to investigate a community that deeply and fully. In some ways, this trilogy is me embracing the challenge he left us all. I was also feeling confined, when I dreamed up the trilogy, by what felt like a shrinking of the American stage. Solo plays, two-person plays, ninety minute plays becoming the norm. I was soaking up plays that take a wide canvas, like Angels in America. Even Jerusalem, by Jez Butterworth, was three hours of roisterous British mythology, and I watched it and thought, “Wow, the balls.” SO: You conducted a number of interviews in preparing to write this piece. Were there any moments from those interviews that stand out to you as a touchstone for Water? QAH: I interviewed Alan Leshner, who runs the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Under Clinton, he challenged the cultural assumption of “addictive personalities” and began to gain traction for this notion that addiction is a disease, not a moral or personality failing. I interviewed my own cousin who struggled mightily with addiction and triumphed in recovery. I interviewed a counselor at Hartford’s Institute of Living who had been called into the professional rehab arena after her own recovery from addiction. What I remember the most is bringing my cousin to Hartford to see the world premiere [of Water by the Spoonful]. It struck a lot of chords —it was painful and yet cathartic for her to watch. We had
breakfast the next day before I drove her back to Philly. She admitted at breakfast that after twenty years sober she still sometimes could not get out of bed for an overwhelming desire to use. “Just one joint, just one beer.” She said she had spent an entire week on her floor recently, trembling and sobbing for wanting to use. But she didn’t. Talk about commitment to sobriety. SO: In addition to writing, you have a strong background in music — including a B.A. in Music from Yale. How does your experience as a musician influence your writing? QAH: I took lessons at Settlement Music School in South Philly. I learned how to live a solo life, and find fulfillment in a solo practice. I learned how to spend eight hours of unstructured time to get better at something, to improve something. I learned how to listen and be patient in the process. I think music lessons are sometimes to teach future musicians how to play music. But I think they also teach anyone and everyone how to become a leader of their own life. Sally also asked Quiara to share some of the moments growing up in Philadelphia that shaped her. Here are three of Quiara’s favorite Philly snapshots: •
My aunt Alice serving up caffe granita at Fante’s in the Italian Market, where she manned the coffee counter for many years. (She’s now behind the scenes, but in her days at the counter she actually won Best in Philly from the City Paper for “Coffee Advice.”)
•
One time I was riding the 34 trolley to school and our trolley rear-ended another 34 trolley right in front of us. All of the people in my trolley flew out of their seats — even though it wasn’t a hard collision, we were only going about five miles an hour but trolleys are big strong heavy pieces of metal. Anyway, as we hit the ground, someone shouted: “I’m calling Allen Rothenberg!” Everyone applauded. No one was injured though.

After Quaker meetings on Sunday morning, I would frequently walk down the Parkway and enjoy free admission to the Art Museum. I knew every square inch of their contemporary collection including the bizarrely magnetic Duchamp installation. Then I’d climb the stairs and spend time gazing at “Prometheus Bound.”

Coming to the Arden in March:
three sisters This March, the Arden presents the world premiere of a new translation of Three Sisters Sisters, Anton Chekhov’s influential story about a family’s unrealized aspirations. Artists have long held an affinity for Chekhov’s work – when Meryl Streep sought to return to the stage, her request – granted – to the Public Theatre was a production of The Seagull. What specifically draws performers and playwrights to Chekhov? Below are quotes from Chekhov enthusiasts – including Three Sisters cast members James Ijames, Scott Greer, Ian Merrill Peakes and Mary Tuomanen – that shed light on why they are drawn to the work of this master storyteller. “What writers influenced me as a young man? Chekhov! As a dramatist? Chekhov! As a story writer? Chekhov!” --Tennessee Williams, Playwright “Chekhov feels like a writer of forgiveness. He’s a peculiar humanist that shows you everyone’s sad, silly flaws and forces you to forgive them — even if their flaws result in a suicide, or an attempted murder, or the end of a marriage.” --Mary Tuomanen, Actor in the Arden’s Three Sisters “I think those characters in Chekhov really are...big people, they are the kind of people that you notice when they walk into a restaurant…They love to eat and drink and fight and cry….And passionate, capable of big mood swings, and a little bit larger than life.” --Christopher Walken, Actor “Really, there are very few writers who create that dichotomy that we see in life — the surprise of comedy coming simultaneously with the tragedy, or one directly on the heels of the other; the absurdity of those opposite emotions happening at once. I think this paradox Chekhov draws so beautifully comes from a very accurate observation of life…. Chekhov’s genius is that he can articulate these universal longings so precisely, so simply.” --Blythe Danner, Actress
A vibrant new translation of Chekhov’s masterpiece about a family’s hope, humor and heartbreak.
“It’s incredible to be in the world of [Chekhov’s] plays… These people [characters] are really on the edge....Things are scary for some of these people, if not all of them.” --Olympia Dukakis, Actress “There’s an existential mindset that [Chekhov]’s working on. There’s a lot of talk about identity — am I here? Am I really here? He’s getting at some core things.” --Tracy Letts, Playwright and Actor “Performing Chekhov…requires the entire heart. The people in his plays live out loud.” --James Ijames, Actor in the Arden’s Three Sisters “Chekhov done right is both real and absurd.” --David Hyde Pierce, Actor “I love Chekhov. When it is done well, life happens on stage. ” --Scott Greer, Actor in the Arden’s Three Sisters “Some of the biggest laughs I can remember ever hearing on the stage would be in…Chekhov plays. These incredible laughs of recognition.” --Frank Langella, Actor “It’s been a somehow unrealized life-long goal to play around with Chekhov. I truly cannot wait to wander around in his brain for a few months.” --Ian Merrill Peakes, Actor in the Arden’s Three Sisters
