From the Producing Artistic Director One of the Arden’s great strengths is that we have three theaters of different sizes that each provide unique opportunities for bringing a wide range of stories to life. The Haas is an epic space, allowing for larger, more expansive works such as Gem of the Ocean and Ragtime. The Arcadia is an ideal space for smaller stories, be they contemporary or classical, and fosters a connection between actors and audience. The Bob and Selma, our most intimate theater, allows audiences to be up-close-and-personal with the actors, or, as with Every Brilliant Thing, in the play itself. Each of these theaters is flexible, meaning that we move the seats around to best serve the story being told. In recent years, I’ve been more interested than ever in keeping the audience as close to the action as possible, gathered together around the stage, seeing others watching the story, all together in the same room. I am drawn to Tiny Beautiful Things and An Iliad because each play does just that: they celebrate the power of theater to remind us that we are all in this together. They are two very different texts – An Iliad is an ancient story, presumed to have been passed down from storyteller to storyteller for centuries before being written down in the eighth century BCE. Tiny Beautiful Things is a completely contemporary creation, a product of the internet age drawn from letters to an online advice columnist and the wisdom she imparts. But despite such different origins – despite being written thousands of years apart – these two plays share an underlying passion: they are stories that explore what it means to be human. Both stories seek to connect, to confront, and to find truth in what can be a shocking and bewildering world. Both strive to answer the unanswerable – recognizing that the quest is worthy even if the outcome impossible. Tiny Beautiful Things and An Iliad share another similarity: they both celebrate the power of the actor. I have worked with so many gifted actors over the years and am still in awe of their incredible bravery, by their willingness to share so much of themselves in their crusade to illuminate what it is to be human. Night after night, performance after performance. The great gift of theater is that we get to share their astonishing and inspiring truth and, hopefully, find ourselves in the stories they tell. When revealing herself as the writer behind Dear Sugar, Cheryl Strayed wrote, “Sugar’s job is to bring things into the light.” She then added, “I’ve always loved the word ‘reveal.’” At its best, theater does just that – and I am so grateful to the actors who give so much of themselves to make this possible. From our Honorary Producer For over thirty years the Arden has been a home for both classic and contemporary works that tell thought-provoking stories. Tiny Beautiful Things continues that tradition with its compassion and hard-won wisdom. Tiny Beautiful Things is a play based on a collection of Cheryl Strayed’s online advice columns that she wrote anonymously for two years. The book of Strayed’s columns had great critical success and debuted as Number 5 on the New York Times Best Seller List. In her review of the book for the New York Times, Anna Holmes said that “the writer’s world view - her empathy, her non judgment, her belief in the fundamental logic of people’s emotions and experiences despite occasional evidence to the contrary - begins to seep into the readers’ consciousness in such a way that they can apply her generosity of spirit to their own, and for a few hours at least, become better people.” Under the deft direction of Maura Krause, we are drawn into Strayed’s generosity and wisdom with the help of Emilie Krause as Sugar. I am delighted to help bring this extremely wise and compassionate play to the stage for the Arden’s 32nd season. Cheers, Betsy

Playwright's Note The letters are real… I thought, as I read Cheryl Strayed’s incredibly moving book, Tiny Beautiful Things. People wrote these letters. A few years ago, author Cheryl Strayed gave advice as Sugar for the literary website, The Rumpus, and later collected the letters into a book. Journalist Marshall Heyman gave his friend, director Thomas Kail, the book and Tommy gave it to me suggesting it could become a play. As I read the letters exchanged, I wept, smiled, and was astonished by the raw and extraordinary candor. Sugar and the writers of the letters reveal themselves and we find ourselves in their conundrums and sorrows, in their lives lived and roads traveled. I yearned to be as bold, audacious, and willful. As I adapted the book into a play, I found the words so illuminating that I grieved and moved on from certain events of my own. Still, if I had one letter to write, it would be: Dear Sugar, I hope to be as brave as the writers of the letters and as open as Cheryl Strayed. – Nia Vardalos

Director's Note Mention Dear Sugar to someone, and in my experience, more often than not you’ll get a response along the lines of “Oh! I love that book/podcast.” I have my own “Oh!” response, which is that the book Tiny Beautiful Things came into my life at just the right moment. A friend gave it to me when I was seizing on anything to help me make sense of my tumultuous, seemingly collapsing life. While I was pretty skeptical at first, I ended up reading a couple of columns almost every night before bed for a month. Some of those columns meant a lot to me. Yet in approaching this play, at first I had no idea how to make these columns mean anything to a live theatre audience. How could the piece feel like anything but a disjointed series of heartfelt monologues? Four incredible actors performing to a room of people felt like the opposite of the reflective nighttime solitude that marked my experience with Dear Sugar. As it turns out, there is no opposition there. This play is about the creation of community through vulnerability and generosity, which is in turn what made any of our quiet personal connections possible. Without the scores of brave and seeking folx who wrote in so beautifully and openly, the concept of Sugar would have been hollow. What ultimately gave an engine to our piece is the truth that building a community is hard. As we learned time and again in the rehearsal room, such an effort compels the individuals involved to navigate generosity in all of its forms. Extending it to others is an act of strength and compassion, sure, but thoughtlessly demanding it from another is an act of privilege. What we think is generosity can actually be our own self aggrandizement, or so much generosity may be unfairly exacted by social oppression that some of our wells are dry before we ever consciously draw on them. In this production, we explored how each of those kinds of generosity manifests in every character, including Sugar herself. We found moments of failure and triumph, moments where the community catches each other when Sugar cannot, and moments where she touches all of them deeply. We built in healing for Sugar as well as for the letter writers. I hope this work of ours makes space for a wide range of reactions. I hope folx watching the show feel invited to engage authentically. And I trust that what we’re doing will ring true for someone, in some small private way, more often than not.

Who's Who AMY L. MURPHY (Managing Director) A Philadelphia native, Amy co-founded the Arden in 1988 with Terrence J. Nolen and Aaron Posner. She is especially proud of the Arden Professional Apprentice program and its contribution to the Philadelphia cultural community. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders-Arts. Amy has served on the Board of the Cultural Alliance and Theatre Philadelphia. She has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council, Theatre Communications Group and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College. ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers–on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community. For the 19/20 season, Arden Theatre Company will stage seven productions as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. We create and produce new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Director's Note Two things that people have been doing since the dawn of human time are gathering together to tell stories and fighting. We are not soldiers. We are storytellers. And The Iliad is a massive and complex story. Like many great texts, The Iliad lays itself open to many interpretations. It is a portrait of a war waged by the powerful that uses ordinary humans as fodder. A portrait of a society whose entire basis is in war. A portrait of an unjust, inexplicable war. A portrait of a generation completely defined by war. Of a leadership willing to send an entire generation of young men to die for a cause that no one fully believes in. A portrait of the dehumanizing effects of war, even as it is also a portrait of all that is noble about humans. A portrait of the human yearning for peace, and all that is desirable about peace, even as peace is wholly denied. This adaptation, into which Denis Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Hare and Lisa Peterson poured their Bush-era outrage that an unjust and unprovoked war could proceed despite mass protests, just as easily lends itself to the more contemporary civilian despair that the rich and powerful will wage wars that profit them regardless of what it means for the rest of us, and that a society based in a country at perpetual war cannot be anything but violent, aggressive, inhumane and dehumanizing to its citizens. Agamemnon values personal pride, glory, and power over the welfare of his army. Greek gods orchestrate battles for sport. Achilles can do nothing with his sorrow and grief but turn it into horrific violence. American capitalism tells us to value profit over people, to hold subaltern and underprivileged lives for cheap, to take the violence that the state visits upon its own citizens as a matter of course. None of us working on this show have ever fought in a war, and telling the stories of those that have only sharpens our sense of the distance between their experience and ours. But all of us have lived our entire lives in a country at war, a country defined by its domestic and international aggression, by its embrace of profit over people, by its addiction to violence and wealth. We live in a society defined by the terrible injustices that support and result from the military-industrial-capitalist complex. With this production of An Iliad, we have done our best to create a prayer for peace. We offer it to you in this spirit, and in hopes that there can be a future where war itself will seem as far away as Achilles, and violence and profit no longer define what it means to be American.

A Message From our Co-Honorary Producers We have always loved and searched for great theatre. One early memory was seeing Judi Dench and Ian McKellen perform Macbeth in one act in London in 1978 at the Warehouse Theatre, which was about the size of the Bob and Selma. The production was so inspiring that it required a second viewing. In the eighties, our journey through the theater world continued in Connecticut at the Yale Repertory Theater, Long Wharf and the Goodspeed Opera House. Over the years, we have been fortunate to enjoy many New York productions on and off Broadway, at BAM, and at Lincoln Center. When we moved back to the Philadelphia area and Delaware 18 years ago, our theater odyssey led us to the Arden, where we have seen many inspirational productions. In fact, we have enjoyed some shows at the Arden more than when we saw their original productions in Chicago (Superior Donuts) and New York (August: Osage County). As ardent Arden supporters who love a great story told well, we are proud to help bring this epic journey to you and your friends.

Written in the 8th Century BCE, The Iliad by Homer is one of the oldest stories known to humankind. So why has this story reverberated throughout history and remained present in our cultural canon? It is because throughout history and into modern day, we have sought out stories of wartime heroism and the inevitable cost of battle. There is an allure to wartime stories that both horrifies and emboldens us. Philadelphia artist Mary Tuomanen brings this epic to life through the adept direction of fellow local Rebecca Wright. LISA PETERSON (Co-author) is a theater director who wrote and adapted An Iliad with actor Denis O’Hare, for which they won 2012 Obie and Lucille Lortel Awards. Her other adaptations include The Waves, adapted from the novel by Virginia Woolf, with composer David Bucknam (Drama Desk nominations), the upcoming The Good Book with Denis O’Hare, and Insurance Men with composer Todd Almond. She was Resident Director at the Mark Taper Forum for ten years, and Associate Director at La Jolla Playhouse for three years before that. Her directing credits include the world premieres of Tony Kushner’s Slavs!, Donald Margulies’ Collected Stories and The Model Apartment, Naomi Wallace’s Trestle at Pope Lick Creek, Janusz Glowacki’s The Fourth Sister, John Belluso’s The Poor Itch, Beth Henley’s Ridiculous Fraud, Jose Rivera’s Sueno, Marlane Meyer’s The Chemistry of Change, and many others. She has worked at theaters around the country including New York Theater Workshop, The Public, Playwrights Horizons, The Vineyard, Primary Stages, Manhattan Theater Club, MCC, Guthrie Theater, Seattle Rep, Berkeley Rep, Actors Theater of Louisville, Arena Stage,Yale Rep, and the McCarter Theater.
