WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director

Our production of Three Sisters is the culmination of a two-year artistic journey. And what an extraordinary journey it has been.

Terrence J. Nolen

It began when Curt Columbus agreed to work on a new translation of this play. Curt is an expert in the art of translation and in all things Chekhov. He’s lived in Russia, is fluent in the language, and has translated all of Chekhov’s masterworks. In addition, he’s the Artistic Director at Trinity Rep in Providence, Rhode Island and an extraordinary theatre artist.

It continued when Curt and I traveled to Moscow in November 2012 to meet with some of the foremost experts in the work, life and performance of Chekhov. We spent time at the Moscow Art Theatre, saw an extraordinary production of Rothschild’s Fiddle (based on a short story by Chekhov) directed by the renowned Russian director Kama Ginkas, and visited Chekhov’s country estate at Melikhova. And we drank vodka. We were struck by the fact that each of our Russian hosts felt such a profound connection to Chekhov, referring to Anton Pavlovich as if he were a dear friend or an old flame. We were introduced to various versions of Chekhov on that trip – all very different, yet each so deeply personal. We spent months casting this remarkable company of actors and bringing together our team of designers, drawing from the Philadelphia theatre community and Trinity Rep’s artistic company. We held readings and workshops with the cast, treating this new translation as we would a new play, allowing Curt the opportunity to continually refine his translation and the cast an opportunity to rigorously examine and explore the text. And we brought in master teachers – David Downs of Northwestern University, Brian McEleney of Brown University/ Trinity Rep, and Emmanuelle Delpech of the Pig Iron School for Advanced Performance Training – to bring new influences to our work. Chekhov wrote for a company of actors and our goal with this production has been to forge that rarest of things: a true ensemble. This research and development has been an invaluable opportunity to test new ideas, challenge old assumptions, and welcome new perspectives. It has required a most remarkable investment of time, energy, and most importantly, passion. To all of those who have brought themselves so fully to this work, my heartfelt thanks. And a special thank you to The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage for their generous support. They encouraged us to think expansively and to radically explore new strategies for making art here in Philadelphia. Without their vision, this project would never have been possible. My thanks to you for being here – and for joining us on this journey. We’ve been waiting for you.

P.S. We are deep into planning for our 2014/15 season, which will include the comedy La Bête featuring Scott Greer and Ian Merrill Peakes, a new play by Michael Hollinger (about organ donations and the ties that bind), and Stephen Sondheim’s Passion, a musical that features what is perhaps his most ravishing score. The remaining two productions will be announced soon. Please join us and subscribe.

DIRECTOR’S Notes Three Sisters is a play that I’ve wanted to stage since I first read it as a freshman in college. At the time, I was going through a Russian literature phase, convinced that The Brothers Karamazov was the greatest novel ever written. Russian literature was filled with huge passions and soaring narratives. Then I read Chekhov – specifically Three Sisters. It was hard-going at first. Seemingly little happened, and I often couldn’t keep track of the characters and all those relationships. But as I worked through the play, I got caught up in the lives of these remarkable characters – swept up by their concerns, lost in their dreams. These characters have a passionate desire to live – to find meaning in their existence. And I thought about my own life: my own relationships and loves and hopes. Here was humanity onstage as I had never experienced it – complex, crushingly funny and so very true. Nothing happened; and absolutely everything. When we started the Arden in 1988, I knew that one day I would direct the work of Anton Chekhov. Our mission then, as now, is simple: to tell great stories by great storytellers. And Chekhov is one of the greatest. Who knew that it would take 26 years to make this happen? During rehearsals for this production, our dear friend and treasured colleague Sheila Kutner passed away. Amy and I have known Sheila from before the Arden began and, when we started this company, she was one of the first people we approached to join our Board of Directors. Sheila’s response was, “Sure, but I don’t know what a board does.” To which I replied, “I don’t either but we’ll figure it out together.” And that’s what we did. Sheila was the first President of the Arden’s Board of Directors and led by Sheila’s indefatigable energy, tremendous curiosity and seemingly unlimited optimism, the Arden was born. She was there at the very beginning; and nothing beats optimism when faced with impossible odds. Again and again, Sheila beat the odds. She believed in miracles and made them happen. Sheila also believed in the power of family, and her entire family has been part of the Arden: her husband Alan performed in A Little Night Music and Caroline, or Change; her son Neil was the Wilma Theater’s Production Manager and provided invaluable advice as we opened this building; her daughter Donna is an American Sign Language Interpreter who has interpreted our productions for over a decade; her youngest son Joel has been an ardent Arden supporter (and a wonderful juggler, but that’s another story); and her beloved grandchildren have grown up coming to Arden Children’s Theatre. To honor Sheila’s tremendous contributions to the Arden, we are creating the Sheila Kutner Apprentice Award, to be given each season to the Arden apprentice who exemplifies the ideals of hard work, positive energy, and can-do spirit that Sheila held so dear and brought so fervently to her own life. Through this award – for many, many years to come – we will tell the story of the remarkable woman who believed in this theatre before it even existed, and who gave so much of herself to make that dream a reality. I’ve been thinking a lot about Sheila as we’ve rehearsed Three Sisters: a play about family and love and dreams and, of course, loss. It’s taken 26 years to produce this play here at the Arden, and Chekhov reminds us that as time passes, life moves on. Seemingly small details can have momentous consequences. And a single person can shape the course of one’s life. I dedicate this production to Sheila.

THE NEXT STAGE:

The Impact of the Arden’s New Play Development At Arden Theatre Company, we are dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers. We believe a great way to support this mission is to continuously add great plays to the canon through the shepherding of new plays and playwrights. Now in its 26th season, the Arden has produced 36 world premieres of new plays, adaptations, translations, and work for young audiences, 18 of which have also been published. The Arden has also provided workshop opportunities for a number of additional projects that have gone on to productions around the country. Arden premieres have received 200 subsequent productions by such prominent American Theatres as Atlantic Theatre Company, Primary Stages, The Globe in San Diego, Two River Theatre Company, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville, Portland Stage, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, City Theatre in Pittsburgh, The Pearl Theatre, and Perseverance Theatre in Alaska, to name a few. 2013 alone has seen 28 new productions of plays that originated at the Arden. Aaron Posner’s adaptation of My Name is Asher Lev, which premiered at the Arden in 2009, recently had a successful Off-Broadway run at the Westside Theatre. Michael Hollinger’s Opus, one of the top three-most produced plays in the country in 2009, has already had three productions this season alone. Our work has also crossed borders, both David Davalos’ Wittenberg and Craig Wright’s The Pavilion (a Pulitzer Prize nominee) have been translated into German; Michael Hollinger’s Opus was recently translated into Japanese and was performed twice in Tokyo last year. Aside from Austria and Tokyo, our new plays have been seen in Canada, the UK, and Australia. In November of 2013 we cut the ribbon on the new Hamilton Family Arts Center. The building is a home to the Arden’s New Play Development efforts and includes six classrooms for Arden Drama School, a rehearsal hall, an 80 seat studio theatre and A postcard from the Tokyo production of Opus

our production facilities. Our new building will help us continue to providing space to workshop and produce new work. We have been forging and deepening relationships both here in Philadelphia and beyond. We have been providing meeting space for A production image from the Australia production the Foundry, a collective of of Wittenberg at the Fitzroy Theatre Philadelphia playwrights, and are excited by the talent of Philadelphia’s next generation of playwrights. We are exploring co-commissioning and co-developing models with leading theatres such as Providence’s Trinity Repertory Theatre, Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre and Minneapolis’ Children’s Theatre Company. The Arden is excited by Philadelphia’s recognition as a hub for new work, and will continue contributing exciting new works to the national and international new play conversation. Our new play development has galvanized our artists and audiences, and the plays themselves have been the leading ambassador for the Arden’s work nationally and internationally.

NEXT ON THE F. OTTO HAAS STAGE

r r u o p c t e l i n b I a dark comedy about the dark ages On stage May 22nd – June 22nd

By

Michael Hollinger

Directed by

Matthew Decker

This spring the Arden presents our 10th production of a Michael Hollinger play, furthering our artistic collaboration with this Philadelphia master playwright. At a decrepit medieval monastery in France, a traveling one-eyed con artist teaches the desperate monks an outrageous new way to pay old debts. Based on true historical events and inspired by Michael’s work in non-profits, Incorruptible – which first premiered at the Arden in 1996 – investigates if it’s ok to do a little bad if the ultimate goal is to work for good. We’ve assembled a comically gifted ensemble for this wicked dark comedy that asks the burning question: “What happens when faith alone can’t pay the bills?”

2014/15 Season Subscribe today and receive priority seating. La Bête

By David Hirson A dazzling display of verbal wit, manic farce, and a little schtick thrown in for good measure, this uproarious comedy about a very serious troupe of actors in 17th century France who become saddled with an obnoxious street performer will feature Arden favorites Scott Greer and Ian Merrill Peakes.

A NEW PLAY

By Michael Hollinger Time jumps backwards, forwards, and sideways in Michael Hollinger’s new comedy that explores what we owe our parents and our children. Second only to Stephen Sondheim, Hollinger is the most produced playwright in Arden’s history. Hollinger is an important voice in American theatre and we are proud to introduce his next world premiere.

pASSION

Book by James Lapine Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim The Arden returns to Stephen Sondheim with this tale of love and obsession set in 19th century Italy.
