Applause, please, for our Media Partners:
WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director We are expanding.
Terrence J. Nolen
We have purchased a building located three doors north of the Arden at 62 N. 2nd Street and will transform it into the Hamilton Family Arts Center. When renovated, this 22,000 square foot building will include classrooms, rehearsal spaces, an intimate 80-seat studio theatre, and a crafts studio for construction of our sets and props. It will allow for a dramatic expansion of our work with kids – after-school programming for teens; a greater variety of classes, camps and workshops; and plays for toddlers, introducing our youngest audience members to the power and possibility of live theatre. The Hamilton Family Arts Center will also be the home for our new play development. We will be able to hold more readings of new plays and musicals under the auspices of the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase, and provide a home-base for The Writers’ Room, our playwright-in-residence program that is currently in its inaugural year. The Writers’ Room offers playwrights the time and space to develop a new play while offering unprecedented behind-thescenes access for Arden audiences. Our first Writers’ Room playwright is Wendy MacLeod, best known for her plays The House of Yes, produced internationally and now an award-winning Miramax film, and Schoolgirl Figure, a dark comedy about extremes of body image obsession in high school, recently adapted for HBO. Wendy is spending four months here at the Arden getting to know the vibrant Philadelphia theatre community and writing a play that we will produce this summer. More information about The Writers’ Room can be found at ardentheatre.org/writersroom. Check it out, and come see Wendy’s new play this July. The Arden has become a hotbed for new play development with plays like Opus, My Name Is Asher Lev, Something Intangible, and Wittenberg being produced at theatres across the country and abroad. The Hamilton Family Arts Center will enable the Arden to be an artistic home for even more artists. It will allow us to plant more seeds (or bulbs given the show you are about to see) and provide artists time, support and space to write great new plays and musicals for the American stage. The Hamilton Family Arts Center is our investment in the future: in our kids, our artists, and in the stories yet to be told. If you are interested in learning more about this campaign, please call or email me. We need your help to make it a reality.

DIRECTOR’S Notes Tulipomania was the first-ever musical to be commissioned by the Arden in 2005. We had previously produced the premieres of Michael Ogborn’s Café Puttanesca, another musical set in an Amsterdam café, and Baby Case, an audacious musical about the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. Baby Case was a seminal production in the Arden’s history. It exemplified the Arden’s dedication to the development of new work and our commitment to advancing the musical theatre art form. Informed by these earlier collaborations, a musical about a man willing to give up everything for a single tulip bulb during the 17th Century Dutch Tulip Craze seemed like an inspired subject for Michael Ogborn’s next project. “Tulip mania,” often referred to as the first recorded economic bubble, seems almost too farfetched to be true. How could these Calvinist merchants immortalized in Rembrandt’s paintings become obsessed with collecting flowers? An economist with whom I spoke compared “tulip fever” to the contemporary art market. The British artist Damien Hirst’s Lullaby Spring (which consists of a steel cabinet containing 6,136 hand-painted pills) was sold for over $19 million - the highest price paid for a work by a living artist - and Tate Modern in London is currently mounting a blockbuster exhibition of his work including his infamous formaldehyde shark. Yet just this month a leading art critic wrote, “Damien Hirsts are the sub-prime of the art world. When the penny drops that these are not art, it’s all going to collapse.” Boom or bust? Only time will tell. Over years of development, Tulipomania has been written, revised, and rewritten again. Ultimately, Michael chose to set the musical in a modern day Amsterdam hash bar, with each patron becoming complicit in the re-enactment of one ill-fated tulip trader’s story. He found a way to tell the story of the Dutch Tulip Craze while enabling contemporary resonances and parallels to co-exist within the telling. Most importantly, he discovered a wondrous way to unleash his great passion for musical theatre and to bring his story to radiant life. Tulipomania was originally inspired by the dot-com bubble. As that bubble all-too-quickly faded, I remember thinking that Tulipomania would no longer be relevant. How wrong I was... Welcome to the tulip trade.
P.S. Baby Case will be produced this summer at the New York Musical Theatre Festival (nymf.org). This is the first production since its Arden premiere in 2001. Sometimes these investments take time to bloom.

Arden Theatre Company’s
A campaign for Education and Innovation.
The Arden is dedicated to the development of new work. Since we moved to our home in Old City in 1995, we have launched the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase, supporting the development of new work, and instituted the Playwrights’ Fund, commissioning new plays and musicals. This year we are expanding our efforts with the addition of The Writers’ Room, a playwright-in-residence program that offers unprecedented behind-the-scenes access. The Hamilton Family Arts Center is a dramatic expansion of space to better serve our students, artists, artisans, and audiences. Located just three doors north of the Arden at 62 North 2nd Street, the 22,000 square foot building will become: seven classrooms, a rehearsal hall, 80-seat studio theatre, lobby, parent lounge, teacher resource center, and crafts studio. When complete the Hamilton Family Arts Center will be a center for the artistic process that will provide the room to expand our new play development work, create a permanent home for Arden Drama School, and increase opportunities for community partnerships. The Hamilton Family Arts Center is our investment in the future.
We invite you to join us in making the Hamilton Family Arts Center a reality. Contact Director of Institutional Advancement, Jessica Calter at 215-922-8900 x49 or jcalter@ardentheatre.org

A Message From Our Production Sponsor At the peak of the Dutch Tulip Crisis in 1637 - “tulip mania” - some single tulip bulbs sold for more than 10 times the annual income of a skilled craftsman. generally considered to be the first recorded speculative economic bubble, Tulipomania provides the perfect setting to explore ambition, greed and envy associated with the most recent speculative bubble. The Arden’s Sylvan Society members were first introduced to an earlier and quite different version of Tulipomania in 2009. That’s when my wife Kris and I joined others for a sing-through of Michael Ogborn’s earlier manuscript on the F. Otto Haas Stage. (Incidentally, that’s one of the perks of being a Sylvan Society member, and a great reason to join today!) As fans of Michael’s two other original works, Café Puttanesca and Baby Case, also first produced on Arden Theatre Company’s stage, we were immediately taken by his wry and witty framing of the great Dutch Tulip Crisis of 1637. Thomas M. Petro
We were thrilled last summer when we learned that Tulipomania would be part of the 2011/12 Arden season. Fox Chase Bank has proudly sponsored a string of world premiere productions on the Arden stage, and the opportunity to help launch Michael Ogborn’s newest work was simply marvelous. To wit, the directors, officers and staff of Fox Chase Bank, proudly welcome you to Tulipomania. We hope you enjoy this world premiere that caps off another fabulous season at Arden Theatre Company. Cheers!

Tulip Mania Michael Ogborn’s Tulipomania: The Musical draws its inspiration from the tulip bulb craze (better known as tulip mania) that broke out in Holland in 1634. Spurred by the whims of the wealthy, this craze financially consumed much of the Netherlands for many years. As the Scottish journalist Charles MacKay (whose text is still in print today and used in contemporary economics classes) puts it: In 1634, the rage among the Dutch to possess them was so great that the ordinary industry of the country was neglected, and the population, even to its lowest dregs, embarked in the tulip trade. As the mania increased, prices augmented, until, in the year 1635, many persons were known to invest a fortune of 100,000 florins in the purchase of forty roots. A contributor to several newspapers, MacKay was the assistant editor of the Morning Chronicle and eventually the editor of the Glasgow Argus—the leading choice of the Whigs in glasgow. His text on the tulip mania of the 1600’s touches on the lengths people went to just to obtain a single tulip bulb. Nobles, citizens, farmers, mechanics, seamen, footmen, maidservants, even chimney-sweeps and old clotheswomen, dabbled in tulips. People of all grades converted their property into cash, and invested it in flowers. Houses and lands were offered for sale at ruinously low prices, or assigned in payment of bargains made at the tulip-mart. However, certain bulbs caught the attention of many potential seekers. Exactly as it is in Ogborn’s story, the Semper Augustus was widely regarded as the paragon of tulips. At one point in time, it was believed that: … at one time, early in 1636, there were only two roots of this description to be had in all Holland, and those not of the best. One was in the possession of a dealer in Amsterdam, and the other in Harlaem. So anxious were the speculators to obtain them that one person offered the fee-simple of twelve acres of building ground for the Harlaem tulip. That of Amsterdam was bought for 4600 florins, a new carriage, two grey horses, and a complete suit of harness. This craze, though, wasn’t a lasting one by any means. Those with money began to see that their funds could be better spent elsewhere. Those on the lower rungs, however, were not so lucky. Many of them had tapped out their savings and even mortgaged against property to find a place among those wealthier. With the demise of the tulip mania, their investments in the bulbs left them virtually penniless and with a product coveted no longer. Hundreds who, a few months previously, had begun to doubt that there was such a thing as poverty in the land, suddenly found themselves the possessors of a few bulbs, which nobody would buy. The cry of distress resounded everywhere, and each man accused his neighbour. The few who had contrived to enrich themselves hid their wealth from the knowledge of their fellow-citizens, and invested it in the English or other funds. Many who, for a brief season, had emerged from the humbler walks of life, were cast back into their original obscurity. Substantial merchants were reduced almost to beggary, and many a representative of a noble line saw the fortunes of his house ruined beyond redemption. The country took years to recover from the damage done by the tulip mania. And the love of these dangerous flowers still lingers in the passion many a Dutchman finds in a beautiful tulip. While the craze that drove the entire economic system of a country into frenzy is long past, it is still haunting to think about the lengths to which people went. “Once upon a time there was a man who sacrificed all he possessed in the world—for a tulip.”

Arden Children’s Theatre sponsored by:
The Arden’s 25th Anniversary Season Next season, the Arden will celebrate 25 years of telling great stories by great storytellers. For this milestone, we’ve assembled five plays that exemplify what we do best: daring and ambitious musicals, dramas that grapple with the complicated notion of the American family, and provocative pieces by contemporary playwrights. We kick off in October with the musical Next to Normal, by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Next to Normal is the story of a suburban family grappling with a mother’s mental illness. Daring, electric, and emotionally rigorous, when Next to Normal premiered on Broadway in 2009, it redefined the American musical. Terry Nolen will co-conceive the production with Jorge Cousineau, reuniting the creative team behind Sunday in the Park with George whose visually arresting, video-based Chromolume illuminated the musical in a whole new way. We can’t wait to see what they have in store. In the fall on the Arcadia Stage, we will present the Philadelphia premiere of Freud’s Last Session by Mark St. germain. An intimate, quick-witted tête-à-tête about love, god, and life, Freud’s Last Session imagines a private meeting between Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis. Ian Merrill Peakes, a Barrymore-award winning actor who has appeared in 14 productions at the Arden, will make his directorial debut. Ian has talked about directing for years, and when he proposed that the Arden produce Freud’s Last Session and that he should direct it, we couldn’t have agreed more. At the start of 2013, we will mount Endgame, by Nobel Prize-winning writer Samuel Beckett. Under the direction of Arden Associate Artistic Director Edward Sobel, who helmed this season’s Clybourne Park, Scott greer and James Ijames will play the co-dependent clowns Hamm and Clov. This darkly comic work was one of the most influential pieces of the 20th century and we are proud to present, for the first time, the work of master storyteller Samuel Beckett to our audiences. Spring 2013 brings Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun to the Haas Stage. Director Walter Dallas, who staged Blue Door and The Piano Lesson, brings this pivotal family drama to life. Hailed as one of the greatest plays in the history of American theatre, A Raisin in the Sun is set against the backdrop of a country struggling to find its tolerance. The story of the Younger family remains just as pertinent today as when in 1959, it became the first play by an African American to be produced on Broadway. The Arden has produced 11 Stephen Sondheim musicals – the most of any playwright or composer in the history of the company. It seems fitting that for the final production of the 25th Anniversary season, we return to his work with A Little Night Music. Terry Nolen directs grace gonglewski, Ben Dibble and Mary Martello and a cast of 16 in this achingly beautiful musical about love and regret set in turn of the century Sweden. We hope you join us to celebrate next season. It promises to be quite a ride.
