PITTSBURGH’S HILL DISTRICT: AUGUST WILSON’S STOMPING GROUND By: Neena Arndt
Born in 1945 to a German American father and an African American mother, Wilson was raised exclusively by his mother and sent to Catholic school. He transferred high schools several times during ninth grade due to racial tensions with the primarily white students; he dropped out at age 15 after a teacher accused him of plagiarizing a paper. But the teenager had not finished (and arguably had scarcely begun) his education. Wilson spent most days at the public library reading about subjects he found interesting. When not reading, he roamed his home neighborhood, absorbing the speech rhythms, social issues, and culture that would later comprise the raw material for his celebrated plays. In particular, he later set Two Trains Running in a diner in the Hill District in 1969 The Hill District circa 1931 with an overlay of zoning – a time and place with which he was intimately familiar. plans for new roads and the Civic Arena created by the Lower Hill Redevelopment Plan of 1955. In 1955, when Wilson was 10 years old, the federal government approved the Lower Hill Redevelopment Plan. Four hundred businesses relocated or closed and 8,000 residents, including 1,239 black families and 312 white families, were displaced. Most found homes in other areas of the city, but the neighborhood never recovered. In the early 1950s its population neared 54,000, while the population in 2010 was reduced to just over 10,000. A neighborhood that had once been a shining beacon of culture now struggled to support even modest businesses like grocery stores, drugstores and diners. By the time Wilson wandered the Hill District’s streets learning “how to be a man,” its cultural heyday had ended. But despite (or because of) its dilapidation, the neighborhood helped shape an important cultural voice: a young man named August Wilson who took to the streets to find himself and eventually the inspiration for his plays. WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director Welcome.

Two Trains Running is the Arden’s third foray into the work of August Wilson, having previously produced Fences (2005) and The Piano Lesson (2008). This play is part of August Wilson’s Century Cycle, 10 plays that chronicle the African American experience throughout the 20th century, all of which, except one, are set in Pittsburgh’s Hill District. Wilson’s Century Cycle is a towering achievement – one that grows more estimable and profound for me as I spend time in their presence, listening to his words and rhythms, struck by his understanding of people, his prophesies, and his ability to see how the past and present are forever intertwined.
The production marks the Arden directorial debut of Raelle Myrick-Hodges, who began her professional career as an Arden Professional Apprentice. When we created the APA Program back in 1993, our goal was to train future theatre leaders, providing access to all aspects of running a nonprofit professional theatre: from box office to backstage to board meetings. Raelle was a member of APA Class #5. Our current apprentices are Class #23. APA grads are working at theatres in this region and beyond: Julianna Brienza is the founder of the Capital Fringe Festival in DC; Annaliese Van Arsdale helped lead the effort to build the new Drake Theatre as the Managing Director for Interact Theatre; our Board President Brian Abernathy is a former APA (and now First Deputy Managing Director for the City of Philadelphia). So is Grammy Award-winning artist Jill Scott. Arden Apprentices are making a mark – they are making a difference. We’re thrilled to welcome back Raelle, the first APA grad to direct here at the Arden. We are excited to announce our plans for the 2016/17 season, our 29th! Arden Co-founder Aaron Posner will be returning to direct his acclaimed new play Stupid F**cking Bird, his irreverent and very funny take on Chekhov’s The Seagull; next up is a new play by Matthew Lopez, The Legend of Georgia McBride, about an Elvis impersonator whose dive bar act is replaced with a drag show; A Midsummer Night’s Dream directed by Matt Pfeiffer, will fill the Haas Stage with passion and music and magic; and we will close the season with Mary Martello as Mama Rose in the legendary musical Gypsy. There is one more play still to be announced – stay tuned. Join us for what promises to be a most exciting season! Great theaters need great audiences. Thank you for being part of the Arden – and if you haven’t yet, please subscribe to next year.

DIRECTOR’S Notes February 8, 2016
Raelle Myrick-Hodges
I have been asked to write director’s notes for a production on which rehearsal has not begun. This is a difficult task because as a director, the complex layers of the characters are yet to be completely revealed to me. As my first opportunity to work on an August Wilson play, I have the trepidation of taking into consideration a myriad of ‘directorial versions’ taken on by some amazing nationally and internationally recognized directors. I am forced to ask myself out loud: What is the value of my vision? Well, first and foremost, I humbly concede that I am merely a vessel for a great playwright. Understanding this, I turn to the language of the playwright as my guiding force.
So, I guess that’s what my notes are about — supporting the SOUND of the playwright, from stage direction to scene transition, to embody the three-dimensional characters in Two Trains Running. The shape of each monologue, Mr. Wilson’s stage directions, even the sound of the diner’s entry bell – it is all a musical score to envelope us in a story. And I have a story to translate, because, though set in 1969, its commentary and narrative tale are simultaneously enlightening, disconcerting and still prevalent in today’s society. From the civil rights movement of the 1960s, to the #BLACKLIVESMATTER movement of today, I am here to serve a story which is supposedly familiar yet surprisingly not well heard. So, I am telling the playwright’s tale – vigorously and with my own sense of liberation from preconceived notions of what Two Trains Running ‘is’. I also understand that a production is not the text alone — it is the voices of the acting artists, the phenomenon of collaboration among the lighting, set, costume and sound designers, and the commitment from an entire production company to support the storytelling of the playwright. For me, this story allows insight into understanding the difficulty of being the only woman in a community of men, the struggle of young men battling incarceration then reentering American society, grappling with mental illness in our communities, and the myths of being a person of color during times of major change in American society. Most importantly, my hope is that the play carries the voice of its writer and causes audiences to listen – and inspires them to ‘lean in’ and hear the narrative. Mr. Wilson’s work is about listening. Luckily, I have a cast of local and regional artists to embody Mr. Wilson’s words. Hopefully we are able to share them with an audience that is ready to hear that the world for the African American community is STILL as complex as it was in 1969.

2016/17 Season
Subscribe today and receive priority seating. STUPID F***CKING BIRD Written and Directed by Aaron Posner Sort of adapted from The Seagull by Anton Chekhov In this irreverent, contemporary, and very funny remix of Chekhov’s The Seagull, Arden co-founder Aaron Posner stages a timeless battle between young and old, past and present, in search of the true meaning of it all. This new play has been showered with awards and critical acclaim and is one of the most produced plays in the country – now it comes to Philadelphia.
THE LEGEND OF GEORGIA MCBRIDE By Matthew Lopez He’s young, he’s broke, he’s just found out his wife is going to have a baby, and now Casey has lost his gig as an Elvis impersonator. When his club brings in a drag act led by Miss Tracy Mills, Casey is given the opportunity to trade one sequined outfit for another. With Dito van Reigersberg of Martha Graham Cracker fame as Tracy, this music-filled comedy celebrates finding your own voice.
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM By William Shakespeare We opened the Haas Stage in 1998 with Shakespeare’s beloved comedy. Next year, Barrymore Award-winning director Matt Pfeiffer creates a vibrant new production featuring Philadelphia’s most exciting up-and-coming actors, musicians, and designers. Join us for a musical celebration of the follies and foibles of human beings (and fairies) in a fresh new staging that promises to be an unforgettable midsummer adventure.
GYPSY Book by Arthur Laurents Music by Jule Styne Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Five-time Barrymore Award-winner Mary Martello comes to the Arden stage as the indomitable Mama Rose. Set in the fading days of the vaudeville circuit, Gypsy features a legendary score that includes “Let Me Entertain You,” “Together, Wherever We Go,” and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses.” One of Philadelphia’s greatest actresses takes on Mama Rose – this promises to be an event not-to-be-missed!
Plus one more show, soon to be announced! (shows subject to change)
A Little Night Music (2013). Joilet F. Harris in A Raisin in the Sun (2013). Jerome Preston Bates and Joniece Abott-Pratt in Stick Fly (2013). Eric Hissom and Ian Merrill Peakes in Equivocation (2015). Christopher Patrick Mullen in Metamorphoses (2015). James Ijames and Craig Spidle in Superior Donuts (2011). Scott Greer in La Bête (2014). August: Osage County (2011).
