LETTER FROM OUR CEO
One of my mother’s favorite songs is a hymn penned by J. Oatman in the 1900s. “Count Your Blessings” reverberated for most of my 2021-2022 as I sat at Sharp’s Infusion Center for my monthly chemotherapy sessions that finally concluded in March. There were times when certainly, I felt “discouraged, thinking all is lost. So, I counted my many blessings and named them one by one…”
AREAA is perhaps one of the biggest blessings in my life. To be surrounded by people who genuinely care for one another in a work setting is a novelty nowadays.
I remember sharing the diagnosis with the executive committee and being told to take whatever time I needed to take care of myself. Tim, Amy and the rest of the leadership team ensured that I was supported in all aspects of my healing journey – emotionally (from emails, texts and phone calls); physically (the wig and hair accessories I received in the event I lost my hair); and mentally (the title promotion this year has challenged me to raise the bar even higher in all aspects of AREAA).
Then there’s our staff team who allowed me to take a back seat for most of 2021 and 2022. I don’t think I’ve thanked them enough – from traveling to representing me at meetings and unburdening me with work stress – thank you Carrie, Christina, Eloisa, Jazz, Jessica, Jordan and most especially to Vanessa.
Our members who have poured out love and support the last twenty months have been simply amazing. The messages I have received have been a source of encouragement and inspiration as I sat in that infusion chair for hours. Our partners have been equally supportive and I am truly grateful to be surrounded by people who deeply care.
Strangely enough, I count Langerhans Cell Histiocytocis as a blessing. If it were not for this disease, I would not have experienced this extraordinary love from our AREAA family. It’s also a blessing because I now know more about my body and this disease and through this journey, I have expanded my sphere of friendship that spans the nurses, physicians and every healthcare worker who have touched my life. What a blessing to receive such great care from wonderful individuals who dispense compassion and kindness when it is needed the most.
So I end with this…
“When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed, When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost, Count your many blessings, name them one by one, And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done”
Light and love,

LOOKING BACK WITH TIM HUR
This year saw AREAA continue to gain recognition from other organizations, lawmakers, and industry leaders. This would not have been possible without the leadership from our 2022 National President Tim Hur, an Atlanta based REALTOR® who's passion for creating cross cultural connections played an important role during his presidential tenure. Tim has an extensive history with both AREAA and the real estate industry. Since graduating from Georgia Institute of Technology, Tim has been an active seller for over 14 years, and is currently the Managing Broker for Point Honors and Associates, REALTORS®, a boutique real estate firm located in Metro Atlanta. He has served in leadership positions with AREAA and NAR in the past, including as chair of the AREAA Policy Committee. We had the opportunity to sit down with Tim and reflect on the past year.
What were the biggest challenges and biggest successes of this past year?
Tim: This year, I think we conquered a very major challenge of successfully transitioning back to in-person events. We really had to learn to roll with the punches in terms of sudden cancelations due to Covid exposure, limiting the number of people in certain areas, making sure people were vaccinated, and prioritizing the health of our members. Despite that, we got back to putting on amazing events at both local and national levels, so kudos to the chapter leaders and staff who made it all possible. I would have to say that the biggest triumph was our Diversity and Fair Housing Summit. We really exceeded expectations there.
Speaking of which, prior to your Presidential position, you were a past National Policy Chair. How did that affect this year’s Diversity and Fair Housing Summit?
Tim: Well, I wish I could claim credit for the record-breaking success we saw in DC, but it really goes to the chapter leaders, partners, guest-speakers, and of course, our members. It was a truly memorable experience to be able to be on stage with representatives from the highest level of our government, and a testimony to AREAA’s significance as a leader for AAPI organizations. Moreover, it proved that we could put on our serious hats, advocate for crucial changes that will affect the AAPI community, and have a great time doing it. I am so excited for DFHS to continue to expand and grow as we look to make it our main Spring event and am confident in Kurt’s ability to knock it out of the park next year.
In the study we published in this year’s State of Asia America Report, we found that there were significant concerns about safety and discrimination for prospective AAPI homebuyers. How can AREAA address this?
Tim: We can continue to educate our members on ways to serve their AAPI clients, provide resources to these communities, and work with policymakers to try to solve these problems. But truthfully, we can’t fix these problems alone, and that is why our partnerships with GSEs, banks, and other nonprofits are so important to our mission. We are proud to be leaders in the diversity, equity, and inclusion space, and are tremendously grateful to all the other organizations that help us fight against hate.
Tim, you have talked a lot about the support that past National Presidents provided during your tenure. Do you see yourself following that trend?
Tim: Well, as I’ve said before, we are always around. Look at the founders; even after 20 years, they continue to be active and supportive to our organization. We jokingly say you “drink the AREAA Kool-Aid”, but it speaks to the fact that once you have realized just how rewarding it can be to be an advocate for the AAPI community, you are hooked for life. Looking to the next year, I will do all I can to make sure Kurt receives the same incredible level of support that I had during my year.
LOOKING FORWARD WITH KURT NISHIMURA
AREAA has been and will continue to be the leading advocate for AAPI housing, and nobody understands that more than Kurt Nishimura. Kurt works as a real estate agent and consultant with Coldwell Banker out of Phoenix, AZ, and has witnessed firsthand the rapid growth of the AAPI community in his hometown of Phoenix. Kurt also recognizes the importance of AAPI identity. Growing up in Chicago, Illinois, Kurt did not have many AAPI peers. Out of concerns for potential racial ostracism, his parents encouraged him to play many different sports, a passion which he still holds to this day. For Kurt, AREAA has been an important community that has helped him to get closer to his heritage, identity
Every AREAA President has a unique approach or goals that they follow during their term. What will that be for you?
Kurt: First, it’s important to me to continue all the great work we are already doing. Creating educational content to help our members better serve their local community, meeting with our representatives in DC to make important changes, and conducting our own research so we can spotlight the most relevant issues facing the AAPI community. But for my year, I really want to draw attention to the incredible power of the AAPI community. Despite the work that still needs to be done, this is a community that has a very high purchasing power, is commanding a greater cultural presence, and is starting small businesses and buying homes across the country. It’s a big deal, and businesses that fail to adequately address this community’s’ needs are missing out on a major market.
This year’s National Convention theme is AREAA Unplugged. What does that mean?
Kurt: I was always a big fan of MTV Unplugged, and I think it will be great for us to embrace the level of authenticity that it created. We are always encouraging new members not to be shy, and to step out of their comfort zone when it comes to AREAA events. AREAA Unplugged is really a way for us to showcase the opening and welcoming spirit of AREAA that I got to experience when I first joined ten years ago.
With Covid restrictions easing, we are seeing membership grow at a faster rate. What advice do you have for these new members?
Kurt, why is leadership a major priority of yours for this upcoming year?
Kurt: Despite making up 27% of employees at Silicon Valley tech firms, AAPIs only made up 14% of executives. This means that, whether intentional or not, big companies are not choosing AAPI leaders at the rate that they should. One of our goals at AREAA is to uplift and train young leaders from this community, and that happens through a variety of ways. First, there are the many professional development webinars and events that we host throughout the year. We also have theEDGE mentorship program, which helps newer real estate professionals get in touch with industry veterans to learn from their experience. Lastly, at a chapter level, there are always ways to get involved and become more of a leader in your local community. This country needs more AAPI leaders, and I am proud to represent an organization that fills that gap.
Kurt: It is easy to get overwhelmed by the big things. Meetings with congress members in DC, fancy galas, conventions with over a thousand people. But I want to take a moment to focus on the granular. AREAA is a place to make connections. Whether it’s a few extra referrals a year, the opportunity to get cutting edge market info, or just to meet like-minded professionals in your community. It all starts with connections. You don’t need to attend every single event, but I encourage new members to put themselves out there, because it’s really a case of you getting what you give.

2021 MEMBER OF THE YEAR
KELVIN KAM
Congratulations to Kelvin Kam for winning our 2021 AREAA Member of the Year Award! Kelvin received the highest number of nominations for this award, praising the hard work he did for supporting our SF Peninsula and Greater East Bay chapters, as well as his devotion towards promoting homeownership for the AAPI community. He hosts free, educational events, organizes community service days, and fosters an energetic and positive attitude that is described by his peers as contagious. The Member of the Year Award also came with a free lifetime AREAA membership, and we are honored to have him be a part of this organization.
If you have someone in mind who you think works tirelessly to promote sustainable AAPI homeownership, uplifts and supports their local AREAA chapter, and is deserving of the 2022 Member of the Year Award, make sure to nominate them at areaa.org
DIVERSITY & FAIR HOUSING SUMMIT
Our 2022 Diversity and Fair Housing Summit exceeded expectations, with a record-breaking number of attendees as well as an unprecedented number of high level speakers. This event featured influential speakers from the highest levels of our government including USTR Ambassador Katherine Tai, Deputy Assistant to the President Erika Moritsugu, Congressional Chairwoman Maxine Waters, FHFA Director Sandra Thompson, OMB Deputy Director Nani Coloretti, ACoC Michael Hsu, and more. Each was highly receptive to our legislative goals of creating and promoting affordable housing, removing barriers to AAPI housing, and expanding language and credit access to a greater part of the population. We also paid
homage to the life and legacy of a groundbreaking leader for the AAPI community and a dear friend to many at AREAA, Norman Mineta.
Our congratulations and appreciation extend to all the AREAA members involved. Without your time and leadership, we would not be able to have the powerful impact that we have in DC. AREAA has cemented itself as a leader when it comes to advocating for AAPI Housing, and it takes the combined effort of members from all across the country to maintain that position. Expanding the size and scope of our DFHS has been a long-time coming goal of AREAA, and with the increased media focus on hate crimes and AAPI issues, it is more in line
with our mission to promote sustainable AAPI housing that we make DFHS our main spring conference over Global and Luxury Summit.
As a result, more time, resources, and effort can be allocated towards taking DFHS to new heights, and this was already clearly noticeable at our most recent one. The caliber of the speakers, experiences, and program were top notch, and these will only continue to grow year after year.
THREE-POINT
Point 1: Affordable Housing Support
An independent analysis from Moody’s Analytics indicated that this bill would result in a10% decrease in rent for lower income and middle-class families, and is aimed to address historical discriminatory policies.
Point
Fair Housing Support
This legislation would provide down payment assistance to first-generation homebuyers to address multigenerational inequities in access to homeownership and to narrow and ultimately close the racial homeownership gap in the United States.
Point
Alternative Credit
The expanded alternative credit creates a more comprehensive model by also including Rent Payments, Utility Payments, Internet and Phone Bills, Insurance Payments, and Student Loans.
theEDGE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
By Prisca Lee, theEDGE Committee ChairBecoming a National leader at AREAA is a big deal. As Asian Americans in the real estate industry, we’re not seen enough as executives, but AREAA creates opportunities for that to happen. National Presidents get recognized and invited to speak on the mainstage for some of the largest industry events throughout the year and that impacts not only AREAA the organization, but also the individual.
During my term as theEDGE Committee Chair, I saw an opportunity for theEDGE to grow into a leadership hub for future AREAA leaders. As a previous chapter president, I knew that some earlier guidance could go a long way and so our big focus this year has been to establish a mentorship program. Each of our committee members participated as a mentee, and our mentors comprised of National leaders. Over the course of six months, mentees and mentors met regularly to discuss leadership, whether that applied to their role within their chapter, professionally or personally. The results have been incredible!
To have a National leader care about your growth and give you regular words of affirmation has been game changing for many of our mentees. theEDGE Committee members have blossomed to become some of the most engaged and visible AREAA leaders throughout the country. Jimmy Chang from Atlanta Metro has contributed to his chapter winning Chapter of the Year! Chapter Presidents like Miriam Crispin from Greater Tampa actively participated in the Diversity & Fair Housing Summit in DC this past May. And upcoming chapter vice-presidents like Crystal Tani from Las Vegas have deepened their relationships with AREAA leaders by showing their support at chapter events. Sean Phalon, a previous Chapter President of Northern New Jersey, had Donnie Pingaro, future 2024 National President, take him under his wing and from it came some incredible ideas. These mentorships not only serve individuals
but the organization as a whole and can help shape AREAA’s evolution with today’s ever changing culture and economy. These amazing things do not happen by accident but from dedication and true intent of the members that serve this amazing organization.
Becoming a leader is a lot easier said than done and does not happen overnight. Developing a culture where leadership can be a collective experience is the future of AREAA, and I’m excited that theEDGE is moving in that direction. Our plans for next year is to expand theEDGE mentorship program to help more of our local chapter leaders thrive in their communities. We want to create stepping stones for our future leaders to use as their North Star as they continue their leadership journey from a local to national level. This will require a lot of collaboration and buy-in from our current and past leaders but where there’s a will, there’s a way and I look forward to seeing AREAA and theEDGE continue to grow in the years come!

POLICY
AREAA’s 2022 Diversity and Fair Housing Summit was a record-breaking success. It was an incredible experience to see the energy and numbers that we brought to DC, especially since it was the first time for many of attendees. We had the opportunity to meet with our lawmakers, whether in person or via zoom, and present our 3 Policy Points before them. This year, we want to recognize a chapter that played a key role in driving attendance, organizing with other chapters, and effectively articulate AREAA’s policy goals to their representatives. We are proud to award AREAA Boston with the Policy Award.
2022 BEST OF AREAA
RISING STAR

BEST GALA
Each AREAA Chapter plans an installation event for their membership and local real estate community, where they also install their new board members. AREAA Galas are large events and require enormous effort and organization. This year, the award for best gala goes to the Silicon Valley chapter.
2022 CHAPTER OF THE YEAR
The AREAA Chapter of the Year is one of our organization’s most prestigious recognitions. To be recognized as Chapter of the Year, the winning chapter must demonstrate not only consistent excellence in ongoing engagement with AREAA National events and initiatives, but also demonstrate the outstanding operation of their own chapter in all aspects. Because of their chapter’s impressive participation with all AREAA events, individual excellence and dedication to their membership, we are proud to award AREAA Atlanta Metro as the 2022 Chapter of the Year! Congratulations to this outstanding chapter for winning this award!
FOUNDER'S UPDATE
2022. Who would have known that we would still be living in a pandemic after almost three years? With the possibility of COVID-19 being categorized as an endemic by the end of this year, we now have the monkey pox to contend with. With all those health related challenges that persist, layer in inflation, rising interest rates not to mention housing inventory issues that makes it tougher to purchase a home, especially for first time homebuyers.
AREAA is on the forefront of these issues to help bolster our home ownership rates. From fighting for more affordable housing units to purchase, to down payment assistance for AAPIs especially in high priced market and the inclusion of AAPIs when it comes to housing assistance from the real estate industry, AREAA is fighting on our community’s behalf. It is unfortunate that the model minority myth still persists and negatively impacts our community. We read of equitable housing goals, initiatives that focus on uplifting other minority communities
when it comes to home ownership but the exclusion of AAPIs from these programs and initiatives is visibly invisible.
What is even more frustrating is this feeling of invisibility is something that we have been dealing with for centuries. Perhaps we are not really “seen” because most people do not take the time to understand how we are different. There is an all too common assumption that all Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are the same, so it is not really necessary for me to “see you” because I already know you. For others, it is easier to ignore AAPIs because it is too difficult to learn the complexities of the AAPI community. For some, perhaps it is more fear based on preconceived notions.
This is where you come in. Your membership and partnership with AREAA empowers AREAA to be the voice of the AAPI community when it comes to housing so we are grateful for your support.
2022. This marks the 10-year milestone for Hope Atuel as the Executive Director of AREAA. Hope joined us in January of 2012 after months of searching for an ED. In the last decade Hope has propelled AREAA into an organization of 18,000 members, 43 chapters and an organization that has a high level of operational excellence within our staff and organizational governance. With Hope’s leadership, we have now a Washington, DC office, and as this is written, the possibility of AREAA being a home owner ourselves by the end of the year. But more that all that, Hope lives up to her name. She is the beacon of hope for AREAA, for our community and others that is impacted by her life. Ivan Choi, president in 2014 facetiously will say “keep Hope alive.” Hope keeps AREAA alive and we cannot be more grateful for her leadership in the last ten years and more years to come.
Kurt Nishimura
President of AREAA
A leader and trailblazer with 20+ years in real estate, we are proud to congratulate Coldwell Banker Realty affiliated agent Kurt Nishimura on his new position as President of the Asian Real Estate Association of America (AREAA). His hard work and dedication in promoting homeownership in the Asian and Pacific Islander communities is inspiring.
