PARKS & RECREATION Mission Welcome to the City of Compton Parks & Recreation Department. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for all Compton residents by providing access to clean and safe recreational facilities that support diverse year round youth, adult and senior leisure time recreational programs. We strive to deliver these services in a professional, courteous manner, with a dedication to ethical standards and responsiveness to the changing needs and priorities of the community. OVER 100 YOUTH PARTICIPATED, HAD FUN AND EXCELLED.

Roughly 120 youth participated in the City of Compton Parks and

Recreation Program basketball this season at five major parks, (Wilson, Burrell, Lueders, Gonzales and Kelly). Staff at five major parks recruited talented youth and coordinated an exciting basketball league for 2016. The picture above features the Wilson Park

Trailblazers The program encouraged youth to play their best, have fun and stay active. Teams won trophies at the end and were rewarded for their sportsmanship, Ultimately, participants gained self-confidence and learned the proper fundamentals of basketball.

Parks received renovations.

Another Great Day in the Park PARK IMPROVEMENT Wilson Park, Burrell McDonald and South Park received makovers on the outdoor Basketball Courts. The new amenities have attracted more youth to engage in positive activity and enjoy parks in the City of Compton. It has been a long time comming and we are progressing with several park improvement projects.

Go Deep 5 on 5 Flag Football League

Tennis

Join in and develop teamwork and sportsmanship in a competitive and safe environment. Whether you are just now learning the basic skills and concepts of football or you are searching for an opportunity to hone your skills with more practice and game playing time, we have a place for you in Youth Flag Football. League begins September 22, 2016 - November 17, 2016. Divisions are Tiny : Born 2007 or 2008, Pee-Wee Born 2005 or 2006, Midgets: Born 2003 or 2004. Program will be held at Gonzales Park.

No experience necessary! This class will focus on proper fundamentals to give students a solid base including teaching hand position and grips, stances, ground strokes, volleys, etc. Stroke production drills and hand-eye coordination techniques are used. Participants will be required to bring a tennis racket and two unopened cans of heavy duty tennis balls. location at Lueders Park.

Youth Girls Volleyball Youth Volleyball is a fast-paced game that can be played indoors or outdoors. The youth volleyball league will run practice Wednesdays and Fridays, and games are TBA. The park teams consist of Tiny (Born in 2007 or 2008), Pee Wee and Midgets (Born 2003 – 2004). This league offers basic volleyball skilled level. League begins September 24, 2016. YOUTH SPORTS Soccer

SNAG GOLF

The City of Compton’s Parks & Recreation Department’s Youth Soccer League is designed to provide fundamental instruction at an introductory level for the game of Soccer. Our goal is to introduce and teach kids the basic skills and concepts of Soccer while having fun, encouraging good sportsmanship, physical fitness, and competitiveness, in a safe environment. Our youth soccer program teaches all the basics of soccer: dribbling, passing, receiving, shooting and everything in between. It is well-suited to the firsttime player, while still being fun and engaging for kids who already have soccer experience. Come enjoy a fast paced popular pastime that will definitely get your heart pumping and your juices flowing. Location at Kelly Park.

SNAG golf is designed for youth golfers of beginning ability levels. The equipment is modified for appropriate use at local parks and it makes learning the mechanics more accessible to youth. Youth will learn fundamental skills that can elevate their game when they play with regular golf equipment. Youth will practice putting, chipping, pitching, launching, and course play.

NEW SPORT Cricket Cricket is the second most played sport in the world. This program teaches the basics of cricket in a fun and supportive environment. YOUTH SPECIAL INTEREST LACMA Art Class

5-Eleven Hoops Autism Basketball Club

Join us!!! Make and learn about art with the entire family. Workshops are led by teaching artists form the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Each series is drop in, you may attend one class or all in the series. No registration necessary. All workshops are free of charge and art materials are provided. Location at Lueders Park.

Looking for a fun activity for a child with Autimsm? Well look no further! 5_Eleven Hoops provides basketball training for youth on the Autism Spectrum and other special needs in a fun supportive environment. The class will take place every Monday during November 7th through December 12th. Location at Wilson Park.

Sk8 Night Grab some friends and bring your skateboard to the Wilson Park Sk8 Night events! Skaters can show off their board skills, listen to music, and have a blast. Kids Night Out Parents!!! need a break? Look no more. Every last Friday of the month we will be offering a night full of fun activities. Key of Knowledge CDC "Academic Champions"

CST provides support to children in the community by offering enrichment programs based on the children’s interests. Programming includes: art, sports, music, dance, volunteer opportunities, high school and college prep workshops, and many more age appropriate activities. www.childrenstrivingtogether.org. arks and recreation Department understands the importance of including all youth into programs. An example of inclusion is our focus on Autistic youth. Over the Summer, Councilperson Zurita sponsoredthe 3rd Annual Autistic Swim Program. Additionally, the Department is working with Know Me Network to provide art for youth with Autism. B.A.S.E. Afterschool Program The Afterschool Playground Program is a program that gives children the opportunity to exercise, play, and build their self-esteem in a safe, fun, and nurturing environment. Additionally, the programs offer opportunities for homework completion and educational exploration. It is designed for youth of all ages and is open to Compton residents and children attending Compton Unified Schools. Afterschool program. The program will be held at all Major Parks. Low Impact Aerobics Have a great workout with these low impact classes. Social Clubs

Learn how to use cardio exercise and weights to look and feel better. Wear workout clothes, bring a towel and be ready for a great workout. Class includes a short warm up, beginner level exercise including weights or resistance training bands and a short cool down period. Train at Dollarhide Community Center.

Our social clubs meet on a regular basis at the Dollarhide Neighborhood Senior Center and various locations in the Compton area. Activities include meetings, games, excursions, parties, and special events. The below chart reflects the days, times of each social club. Whether your looking to add fun and excitement to your life or enjoy the social activity of club atmosphere, one of these clubs will definitely suit your needs.

Tai Chi Tai Chi is designed to help seniors fight stress and live a longer and healthier life. Originally developed for self-defense, Tai Chi has evolved into a graceful form of exercise that’s now used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions.
