Introduction Compton’s My Brother’s Keeper Local Action Summit was a huge success.

On November 14, 2014, around 100 participants showed up to our local action summit. They enthusiastically catapulted collective impact toward achieving MBK goals by engaging in dialog, panel discussion, working groups, and networking sessions. The summit was a much-needed addition to our current efforts of building the infrastructure to improve conditions for our most vulnerable population. The summit was comprised of community leaders, elected officials, law enforcement personnel, business owners, faith-based leaders, former gang members, youth leaders and community-based organizations. We convened to discuss how to address several complicated issues and how to establish responsibilities within our community ecosystem. This brief report provides a glimpse of how we designed our summit to maximize an action-oriented gathering with a focus on collective impact and what transpired at our Local Action Summit with an elite group of people. Overall, the summit helped us to successfully build momentum, spread awareness of MBK goals, collect pertinent information, and inform partners of next steps. 3

Building momemtum! Special Assistant to the White House, Mr. Michael Smith presented compelling evidence and a business case for moving toward action. Mr. Smith appropriately summed up the attitude of participants and the energy within the Compton Community Center when he said:

“Compton is serious about building strong children and I am so excited to help in that mission. 4

SUSTAINING MOMENTUM Individuals from all walks of life including from the entertainment industry arrived to show their continued support and their commitment to creating opportunities for boys and young men of color in Compton. This cross-sector partnership added value to creative discussions with individuals and organizations who are committed to pursuing shared goals. The culmination of distinguished partners and creative minds inspired a unique combination of focus and excitement necessary to sustain momentum toward completing our mission.

Facilitating a creative working environment We worked with a diverse group of professionals and community members around setting goals, determining priorities and creating recommendations to achieve our three MBK goals. Roughly 100 participants came to our local actoin summit representing around sixty organizations across various sectors. We prepared 16 round tables that seated six to eight people per table. We placed informational packets at each table to help focus conversations around key points. The worksheets were designed to help us understand the needs, assets and the level of commitment around helping all youth, including boys and young men of color, in your community.
