Summer is here What beautiful, warm and sunny days… days to go out and frolic, to play. I encourage you to go outside …do some outdoor activities. Visit: a Wildlife Refuge; or, an Animal Sanctuary. Go to the park. Go to the beach. Just go outside …have fun and play. Nature is waiting. Take time to have fun and enjoy yourself, while you are taking time to help all those animals who are depending on you. We are always here for you. Warmly, Nancy & Arwen.

If you wrote a book, what would you name the main character and where would he go?

What’s the funniest thing you saw today/this week?

If we had an airplane to take us on vacation right now, where would you want to go?

Who is your favorite tv/book/story character and what do you like about him/her?

Where is your favorite place to be?

Did you know… •

Prairie dogs play a vital role in maintaining the prairie ecosystem. Their churning activities aerate the soil allowing more water penetration.

Prairie dogs are highly social, living in large groups called “towns”.

Prairie dogs co-operate to share food, protect their burrow and often groom each other.

While prairie dog group forages and maintains the burrows, one or more individuals act as a sentinel keeping watch for danger

When prairie dog group members meet each other they give them a prairie dog kiss or nuzzle.

Prairie dogs act together to ensure each others’ safety.

Prairie dogs are intelligent animals with complex communication.

Prairie dogs have a range of different barks and chirps for communicating different messages.

The name Prairie dog was given due to their habitat (prairies/grasslands) and their warning calls which sound like barks.

Prairie dogs live in underground burrows which have a complex tunnel and warren system. They have specific areas for nurseries, sleeping, toilets and even listening posts near exits

How You Can Get Started …In Activism

Are you ready to be a Vegan-Activist? If you’re wondering, how you can get started, here is a suggestion:

Organize Your Own Protest Planning Pick the date, time, and location of your protest. Give yourself some time to get the supplies you need. Begin planning, at least two weeks prior to the event-date; this will help your event succeed. Consider “foot-traffic” (how many people will see you?): time of day; lunch-time or dinner-time; etc. Protests should last about an hour. Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. can be productive (i.e., lunch-time on the weekend) …people are out and about). Most public sidewalks are available to use; however, some cities require that you obtain a permit. You can call the local police department and ask if you need a permit, to organize your peaceful protest. Remember, the more people that attend, the better—invite others to join you. Before Demo On the day of your protest, arrive 15 minutes early. Your clothing can have an impact: wear your favorite animal rights t-shirt; etc. Make sure you have “investigated the issue” which you are protesting, so you can have facts and be able to answer questions that might be asked. At the Demo Be sure that all (your group’s) hand-held signs, can be read easily, by the spectators. Also, you can hand-out informative flyers, to the people passing by. As you hand out your flyers, do so with a smile. You could say, to the observers: “Did you know about this?; Here’s some info that might interest you; etc.” Take some pictures to share later; that will help you to expand the outreach, of the event. Interacting Be polite. Smile. Be: respectful; courteous; and, compassionate, to everyone. Yelling, angrily, will surely send the wrong message. After Demo Collect all your materials and take them with you. yourself, for doing something to help the animals.

Don’t litter.
