Editor’s Note: Welcome, to the New Year, of New Mexico Vegan! It is my wish, that in the year 2016: humanity becomes a purely-vegan society. I hope, that all beings, everywhere, will experience: love, harmony, and mercy, in the coming year. As more people value, “the non-violent way of the plant-based diet,” our collective human consciousness, is expanding, towards the harmonious-number “one:” all alike – as peaceful; each unique -- as specially gifted. Each of you who is vegan, is represented by an animal, still alive today, who would, otherwise, “not be” so alive. Some, of you, are considering: becoming-vegan (…your open-mind is appreciated; because, your open-mind is {happily …for the animals & all the Earth} investigating the dietary-&-emotional purity of veganism). What is my resolution, this New Year? ...to continue promoting veganism, as: the most compassionate lifestyle. “Veganism” is more than a diet-concept. A “true-vegan” believes in the ideal of: happiness for all. There is no ethical-reason, to deny any being: the birthright of happiness. Regarding the desire for world peace: must we concern ourselves (so much) with giving …or can we simply focus on not taking; must we concern ourselves (so much) with doing (for others) …or can we simply cease our violence, and allow (others, to be who they are)? Is it not our greatest societal need, to have an “inner” stairway to heaven, built of self-sufficient individual-steps; wherein, no one is dependent on “being given to” from: others, on the “outside?” A chain is only as strong, as its weakest link, yes? Well, let us be: unbreakable. Let the debate… “on humans giving-happiness (to others)” …be, for a moment, put aside. Can we, now, be fair-minded regarding the idea… “of humans giving-slaughter (to animals)” …and let it speak for itself? If, all we can achieve, is to stop doing obviously-harmful things, to others: then, beautiful personalities will bloom & grow, by virtue of the real-nature of humanity, (which will shine anew). Vegans advocate for “all, in harmony;” where harmony, is based on: non-violence. Vegans everywhere, (many, by simply dining as vegans), are fighting for the rights of “trillions of animals,” who are digestively-consumed (by global humanity), annually. If animals (within “Animal-Agriculture”) knew they were going to die-prematurely and be eaten (after having been enslaved), they would resist, yes? The (non-human) animalkingdom is not rebelling against humanity, because they trust us. Animals do not anticipate the violent-circumstances, coming to them, by (some version of) us. Animals are unassuming of human-violence; and, therefore, they silently & ignorantly surrender, to being innocentlydragged, to their bitter destiny. My resolution this (new) year…?... to be all I can be: so that these absurd-atrocities may (new-ly) come to an end. Join me, in a New Year’s resolution, to share veganism, with everyone, this coming year: So we can get closer to peace, love, and harmony, for everyone on this planet. Happy New Year! I have a question for …animal lovers; rights-activists of every sort; environmentalists; those against war/discrimination/hunger; (etc.) who, yet remain: non-vegan. Certainly, I appreciate that some carnivores are helping, to eradicate “violence.” Nevertheless, if you pet the dog; then, eat the cow: are you not self-conflicted, (furthermore, how can your advocacy be fully effective)? If one is advocating for even a thin-slice of “social justice pie,” that advocate’s own life, itself, should be a nearly-spotless-example of justice, yes? Otherwise, how can the advocate’s conscience, plead …for anything? There are many instances of “pet the dog/eat the hog” involving (ironically) “activism for animalrights.” Animals suffer: (animals, in every moment of their existence, will either: feel pain or peace; be whole or broken; be alive or dead; …just the same as You & I). Therefore, when a person discusses “protection for dolphins,” over a meal of “steak & lobster” …well now… that presents a poignant-question, does it not? Is one’s consciousness more-highly-evolved, who: eats the other; or, empathizes with suffering in the other? I could continue lobbying: against “this side of the fence (pain);” or, for “that side of the fence (peace).” But, those of you, who are on both-sides of the fence, already know the righteous-case that I would plead with you, because: you are already pleading that-same-righteous-case, for some other cause, in some other field. You are, just, not pleading it, for veganism; since, you are not vegan. This is why you will have a powerful gift, when you fully come over, to stand with both feet, firmly on the side of veganism: because, you will have much needed empathy, for aspiring-vegans, who are struggling to detach, from their carnivorous-desires. What I am asking, is this, “Can you look inside yourself, deeply enough, to complete the circle of compassion you have begun?” Understand this: if you are not vegan, then you are not completely connected, with your own wishes. As you delve, well, into these thoughts; you will see the steps, that lead to completion. You must arrive, at the center, in the full-circle of compassion; only then, can you be a shining example, of advocacy, for the oppressed. I salute your courage, in this plight, to make the world: happier; and, more harmonious for all.

Meet: Alamogordo, NM Alamogordo, sits in the Tularosa Basin. The Tularosa basin, is the product of an ancient underwater geological dome, that buckled, as seas regressed from landmasses, to form the basin. Veganism. For us it has been a journey of love and compassion. One that is leading our family of six to a world of betterment and empowerment. A journey that has not for one second been a difficult one. There was no second guessing, no doubting. On the contrary, life is so much better! After becoming aware of the reality that is the unimaginable cruelty behind animal farming, the least we could do as a family was to become vegan. For ourselves and all our fellow animals that we do not “eat” anymore. This was decided as a family and not forced onto anyone. We all felt it in our hearts as the right, the only way to lead our lives on forward. If our young children are so capable of compassion and embrace vegan living for what it is and can also see all its benefits, why can’t so many adults? As vegans, we have learned the stereotypes all too well. The classic, “Do you only eat salads?” “Where do you get your protein?” “You need meat.” The ignorant, “You have to drink milk for your bones.” (do they mean to put holes in our bones? Lol!) And the just plain silly, “Animals were put on this earth for us to eat.” (According to who?) There is not one thing anyone could say to defend any of these arguments. Scientifically or Ethically. “Why do we have incisors?” Why does one of the strongest mammals have them? The gorilla, herbivore. Where does he get his protein to build his tremendous strength? Easy answer, plants!! Like a lot of beings and creatures, we have to tear and chew our food to better digest it. The plain cruel statements like “We have always done it that way!” All pretty senseless. On the other hand, learning about the abuse, exploitation and suffering that farmed animals endure was heartbreaking and it made us open our eyes and embrace and appreciate all nonhuman life even further. Nutrition is extremely important to us as we raise our children and take care of ourselves as well. It caused us to deeply study the lifestyle of being a vegan. We knew it would not be a “diet,” but a new and a refreshing way to live. Every documentary we watched, every piece of medical evidence we came across and testimony from credible experts and longtime vegans, whether online or in person, pointed to the same conclusion, veganism is not only good for the animals and the planet but a much healthier way of nourishing our bodies. We discovered that being vegan was such a no brainer! A plantbased form of eating offers all the nutrients we need plus a long list of added health benefits. Our 13 yr. old son plays football for his high school and he was outstanding in his first season being vegan without any animal derived food. He is a healthy young man who is concerned about nutrition and the environment, things that are positively affected by living vegan. So he’s taken care of in both of those areas. We have one boy, and three girls and all under 13. So you can imagine, we still prepare all the comfort foods children and adults enjoy. Chili cheeze veggie burgers with seitan baco’n and mayo. A variety of sandwiches with mock deli meats, seitan or simply beans, avocado and veggies. Pozole red or green. Tamales red or green or sweet. Unlimited amounts of different pastas. Enchiladas. Tacos. Asian. Italian. Mexican. Even some fried foods 100 % Vegan. Classic desserts like cheesecake, chocolate chip cookies and even glazed donuts! Again, all vegan. All the veggies and fruit we want. Most of our favorite foods are actually raw vegan as we’ve discovered a variety of rich new flavors and foods that otherwise we would never have tried with our old monotonous eating habits. We now have a good time in the kitchen preparing our food and involving everyone in the family, even relatives and guests. Why eat only a few types of animal flesh that is cholesterol, hormone, pesticide and chemical laden, which we used to drench in different sauces, salt and spices to make them taste good? Now that doesn’t sound like much fun at all! As far as milk and cheese, with so many cruelty-free varieties and more nutrient dense, who needs to consume the secretions of another animal that is naturally meant for their babies. Eggs are easy to substitute for baking and cooking and again once you come to terms with what an egg really is, hard to ever want to eat one again. We are thankful that we are now conscious and aware and that we can raise our children to become free thinking individuals, not conforming to the many absurdities that are indoctrinated on us since childhood and to which we grow so dependent on. The same absurdity that has manipulated us into turning that “switch” of compassion toward animals on and off, discriminating against some as we see fit and convenient, when in essence we are all equal. We all have the same capacity to feel physical and emotional pain, fear, anxiety and if allowed happiness and joy. Karla Flores www.cloudcroftvegansociety.com.

Grilled Eggplant Niçoise Recipe Serves 4

This simple Mediterranean sandwich makes an elegant lunch or a late-afternoon dinner. •4 cloves garlic •1 large eggplant, sliced into thick slabs •Juice of 4 lemons (about ½ cup) •¼ teaspoon cracked black pepper •1 tablespoon dried lavender •½ teaspoon saffron •4 large slices French bread or sourdough bread, toasted •1 small fennel bulb, sliced •2 tomatoes, sliced •¼ cup sliced pitted Niçoise olives or green olives

Smash the garlic and rub each slab of eggplant with the garlic. Place the eggplant in a shallow bowl and pour the lemon juice over it. Add enough water to submerge the eggplant. Allow the eggplant to marinate for at least 1 hour, then drain and place it in a shallow dish. Add the garlic, pepper, lavender, and saffron and let it sit for about 1 hour. Place the eggplant directly on a grill over medium heat and cook until it is soft on both sides but not charred. Place a grilled slab of eggplant on a slice of bread and top with a couple slices of fennel and tomatoes and about 1 tablespoon sliced olives. This sandwich is served open-faced.

"Some people think the plant-based, whole-foods diet is extreme. Half a million people a year will have their chests opened up and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme." ~ Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn "After all the information I gathered about the mistreatment of animals, I couldn't continue to eat meat. The more I was aware of, the harder and harder it was to do." ~ Liam Hemsworth "It is not YOUR right—based on YOUR traditions, YOUR customs and YOUR habits—to deny animals THEIR freedom so you can harm them, enslave them and kill them. That’s not what rights are about. That’s injustice." ~ Gary Yourofsky "We cannot have peace among men whose hearts find delight in killing any living creature." ~ Rachel Carson

Over the course of my lifetime, I have witnessed many societal changes here in the U.S. — from civil rights, to women’s liberation, to the peace movement, Earth Day, smoking bans, gay rights — all are historically significant. Today we are on the verge of another enormous social change. The trend is clear and the momentum is building as educated and caring people, particularly millennials, are beginning to see non-human animals as feeling individuals with their own desires and rights. They are shifting away from seeing them as property and resources for food, clothing, experimentation or entertainment. As baby boomers learned early on, we don’t need a majority of Americans behind a cause to effect change; it occurs at a tipping point well below 50 percent. It actually requires almost single-digit percentage numbers to make change possible throughout the entire country. As cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead famously wrote, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” Animal agriculture is wreaking havoc on Earth. With 7 billion-plus humans inhabiting the planet, we are running out of land and resources to produce animal foods for the masses. As Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, says in the documentary Cowspiracy, our survival as a species depends on drastically reducing animal food consumption “to about two ounces a week.” Other reasons people are embracing veganism are to feed the world’s hungry, preserve peace, conserve natural resources, improve health, achieve sustained weight loss, and to demonstrate love and compassion for all animals. To illustrate the changes that are occurring, a few interesting way-markers include: the latest president of the American College of Cardiology, Dr. Kim Williams, is vegan; vegan ultra-marathoner, Scott Jurak, smashed the record for supported traverse of the Appalachian Trail; White Castle offers vegan veggie sliders nationwide; Subway has vegan sandwiches available at 1,000 locations (more to come) nationwide; Wendy’s is offering a black bean burger; IKEA introduced vegan meatless meatballs at all stores; Ben and Jerry’s is making a vegan ice cream line; a California school became the first in the country to go entirely vegan; Jon Stewart and wife Tracey are opening a farm animal sanctuary; life-altering documentaries like Cowspiracy, Forks Over Knives and Earthlings are streaming; U.S. meat consumption is down 10 percent in the last decade; and Stevie Wonder, Kalel Cullen, Bono, Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus have gone vegan, joining dozens of other celebrities. Social justice movements are tenacious, brazen and most importantly — successful. The number of vegans in the U.S., by one poll, is more than 22 million — relatively small in number but growing exponentially. Many of us baby boomers remember the enormous resistance we got from the “establishment” in the ’60s and ’70s. Today we are the establishment, and considering the far-reaching implications of our lifestyle choices, we now have to ask ourselves, what side of history do we want to be on?

An Evening with Will and Madeleine Tuttle

Will Tuttle, PhD (best-selling-author of The World Peace Diet; pianist/music-composer; former Zen Monk; etc.) offered a live presentation, during a special-edition ABQ Veg monthly-meeting [on Saturday November 21st 2015, in Albuquerque]. {It was the first, in a series of lectures to be given, here, in New Mexico (…Santa Fe and Taos)}. I was enjoying the honor, of introducing Dr. Tuttle; when I was sweetly-moved, by the look of serene-anticipation, on the caringfaces, in the audience. “Something was,” as we say, “in the air …a feeling of global-family-reunion-with-loving-purpose.” His central-thesis, for the evening, was the acclaimed, planet-saving topic: Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony. In this context, he detailed the ‘inner and outer’ values, of living a: vegan-lifestyle. Will Tuttle shares the Vegan Message through ‘beauty.’ Happiness is beautiful. Rather than complaining about our “need for the message” …he is happy to help. After all, true-vegans are not just bitterly-waiting for future-success (to arrive, as a result of their present righteous cause). Happiness, is one of the ‘now-fruits’ of vegan-wisdom. When Dr Tuttle speaks, about humanity’s unconscious ‘votes’ (dollars/lust) for carnivorous foods: he is gentle, not judgmental. No one is individually-responsible for ‘choosing’ a dietary habit, Tuttle says. Therefore; blame, guilt and condemnation, (on anyone) is unrealistic. Everyone (from birth) is physically, psychologically & emotionally conditioned, to follow some particular social-food-program. In America, most children have a food-program modeled to them, within their household (by: family, the refrigerator, televisions, & magazines, etc.) …and, also, in their local community [by: neighbors, friends, schools, advertisementbillboards, & restaurants, etc.]. Most children {on planet Earth}, have the carnivorous-program (everywhere; and, at all times) modeled to them. In fact, for most of our national culture, the carnivorous-food-tradition, is so long-standing and so deeplyingrained, in daily habits (including religious-rites and beloved-celebrations), that any opportunity for ‘food choice’ (other than growing-up “carnivorous”) is overwhelmingly: precluded, overridden, & suppressed. Odds are, if you were born in the US of A, you ‘grew-up’ eating animals (because, really, you had no other ‘choice’). Within certain carnivorous-cultures, the conscience (in some people) of the community: may be prone to think, compassionately, on behalf of animals; and, may potentially rebel against “killing & eating animals.” As a safeguard, against this threat-ofawareness, the carnivorous-custom has evolved a ‘shield’ to protect and perpetuate itself. This shield, is in the form of a ‘taboo.’ Although this taboo, is {outwardly} unwritten; it is {inwardly} written, on the collective sub-conscious minds of its adherents. The taboo decrees, that: we shall not talk about killing & eating animals. This “taboo-imposed silence” is a form of impersonalintimidation, which suppresses the urge of the communal-conscience, to speak-out. If conversations, regarding food-and-ethics, were encouraged; then, people who are ordinarily content, might have to face inconvenient social-upheaval. The carnivoroushabit is resistant to: sacrifice. Such a habit, therefore, “uses” a taboo (of this kind); to insure that, the principle of killing & eating animals: is rarely-challenged. Another term, used by Tuttle, is “disconnection.” I must, ‘disconnect’ my sympathetic-love, from an animal, before I eat it; if I do not (so “disconnect”), “my conscience will not allow me to eat the animal.” ‘Disconnection’ allows me (the ‘eater’) to perceive an “animal” as a “non-sentient object” …now, I (the ‘eater’) can escape remorse, regarding the pain & death of an animal, that once breathed & circulated-warm-blood: as I, now, do. “Occasionally, pet the dog; yet, constantly, digest the hog” -thus is (here quoted) the unconscious-motto of our carnivorous-society. How, can the hog be loved, (with doggy-love); when the hog is becoming feces, in the bowel? The mind, is not to blame, for the “broken love-connection” between the human-eater & the eaten-animal. The eater’s consciousness has merely adapted a means of avoiding torment, since: we cannot have our hoggy-love; and, eat it, too. We must ‘disconnect’ from our own conscience (if we are to escape emotional-conflict) while sumptuously “dining” on our loved-ones. Consider this elegant ideal: Plants are conscious; however, Plants do not have, animal-type-consciousness; Plants have plantconsciousness; subsequently, Plants do not suffer, (as animals do) from being eaten by humans; furthermore, As an aspect of wisely-compassionate Nature, ‘plants’ are nature-ally, a non-toxic, complete-food. If humanity were able to (only briefly, yet sincerely) contemplate the eating of animals; then humans would intuitively-infer, that eating flesh & blood, is as toxic as it is, horrifically unethical. A metaphysical toxin (violent belief), is the underlying reason, that a human-body, plays host, to a physical toxin (disease). As the saying goes, “By hating another, I poison myself.” Tuttle refers to this principle as: ‘Reductionism’ …one’s habit, of mentally ‘reducing’ one’s own perception, of ‘another’ being’s true-value (e.g., believing that a being is ‘less’ than it truly is). Since the body behaves, as the mind believes; the next phase of ‘reduction’ is to outwardly-treat the ‘other’ being as ‘less than’ (e.g., mental prejudice …becomes… behavioral abuse).

NM Vegan | 12

An Evening with Will and Madeleine Tuttle (continued)

The following ‘thoughts’ (whether, conscious or unconscious), are examples of, reductionism: “Animals do not have, feelings. Animals are merely unfeeling commodities [i.e., inanimate objects, such as: cars; phones; trash-cans; toilets; beds; sidewalks; food; etc.].” Reductionism, may begin as an unconscious-attitude; or, a dogmatic-belief. However, ‘reduction-ism’ has progressed, to become: seriously-physical-abuse, when a person, repeatedly-stabs-animals (even if that person is, performing a job ‘duty’ in an animal-agricultural slaughter-house. Which of us, humans, does not associate our own ‘bleeding’ with, some degree, of our own ‘pain?’ When a breathing cow, is stabbed …it bleeds: when a stone is stabbed …it does not, likewise, bleed. If a human, cannot make, the obvious link, between an animal’s ‘bleeding’ and that animal’s ‘pain’ …then, it is only natural to imagine: that this human’s instrument-of-perception; has, also, been ‘reduced’ (e.g., this human has been robbed of: intelligent-discrimination; and/or, compassion). The murderer, is deserving of the same (equal) compassion, that we have for the murdered. They are both wounded. Oftentimes “legal” murder (of animals, within food/product-industry) leads to “illegal” murder (of humans & animals, outside food/product-industry …i.e., Perpetrator Induced Traumatic Stress). In ever-increasing numbers, hired-laborers, (whose hourly/daily/weekly/monthly/yearly job is to routinely slaughter animals), are turning their “job-related” murderousactions, on their family, pets, neighbors, or unacquainted citizens in the community/world. The detriment of carnivorous “habits” is, simply, continuing to gain momentum, toward absurdly harmful appetites. Most human-carnivores, are not directly involved, in the bloody murderous-acts, of animal-agriculture, (because; conveniently, “it” comes neatly and cleanly packaged {even white-wrapped} by the local butcher). Nonetheless, all carnivores are involved (indirectly, if not directly) in “swinging the axe.” Again, we have all been carnivores (if not in this lifetime, then, in some other). There is no judgment, here; simply a recognized, matter-of-fact. But, when will it end? Will it end with you? Will you be one of the heroes, for a long-awaited global-change? Seventy-five (75) million animals, are slaughtered, daily, for food, in the U.S., alone; those vast numbers are matched: by an equally vast number of tongues, who are happily tasting the blood, and silently saying ‘yes’ …to the knife (in the slaughter-house). We should question our food system. Because, those questions will expose, the root-cause, of all our social ills. The root-cause is: that which we put into our own mouths & bellies. Food-rituals are the most powerful subconscious-programmers: a person’s deepest beliefs of “right & wrong/mercy & cruelty” are linked to the food they eat. When we change our food; we change ourselves …at the most fundamental human level. If we want to get rid of violence, we should eat non-violent food. Non-violent food, will create non-violent people. Will Tuttle feels that veganism is the solution, for averting a self-created global-apocalypse. We must end the sickness, through complete purification. Humanity must “go all the way” to “radical inclusion.” We must ‘include’ all beings, equally, in one sphere of non-suffering-existence. If given the chance, each “I” would eagerly grant its own self, peace. Let us extend that right, to all. -- Madeleine Tuttle -Madeleine Tuttle, (visionary artist; Waldorf teacher; etc.) was also in attendance, and supervised a “booth of Tuttleofferings” (including: Books; CDs; and, Art; etc.). They both gave of their time, after the presentation, to answer oneon-one questions. For more information on Dr. Will & Madeleine Tuttle visit… http://www.worldpeacediet.com/

-- Climate Hope "Rudolph The Red Nosed ...Windmill?" "Holiday Stroll For ...Climate Hope?" Yes, naturally; this is New Mexico (a land ready to turn to 100% Clean Energy/i.e. NonPolluting & Naturally Renewable)‌ ...And, so, there we were, in The Annual Nob Hill Holiday Shop and Stroll 2015, ...a warmlydressed, yet red-cheeked group, (virtually "donning" lanterns and posters), singing CleanClimate-Christmas-Carols (yes, you read correctly... or did you?) all, while doing A Holiday Stroll For Climate Hope. Our primary hope: (was to) spread a message; and, collect petition-signatures, for the sake of A-Pure-Environment around our children, right-now, and in all future-generations {of course we were, also, basking in a little yuletide-glory, on this December-solstice celebration}. We gathered at Triangle Park, where we discussed some strolling-logistics, and practiced our repertoire of Clean-Climate-Christmas-Carols (can you say it ten-times...fast?) {you may listen-to or download the carols at http://www.riograndesierraclub.org/nob-hill-holiday-stroll/}. Even though we had plenty of 'room' for improvement ...in our caroling... we sacrificed further rehearsal, and loyally strolled out onto bustling Central Avenue, so as not to delay our mission, on this windy & wintry night, in Nob Hill. What flavors of personality, awaited us, down the main avenue of our town ...down Old 66; ...as, down fell the temperature...down . . . [Holiday Stroll For Climate Hope was sponsored by: Sierra Club, 350.org; Environment NM; Positive Energy Solar; and, Osceola Energy.] ----------( )---------I must add my disappointment, unfortunately, that 'veganism' was not "strolled for" by the 'Climate Hope strollers' (per the sponsors, above) {though I did, with constant fidelity, wave my vegan-poster}. Yes, it grieves me, that higher-causes are pleaded for, from the dark and narrow lanes, in the basement, beneath "the world's metaphorical bell-tower" ...while lesser-causes "ring" (atop the tower) from the bell, itself. The violence, which humans force onto animals; is, consequently, returning to humans. Do you know what the vegan-banner is waving for...?...that which our own national-flag is waving for: "spilled blood" ...and 'freedom.' Anything good, is good; but, better is better. Vegan-ism includes all that is good, and goes all the way, (through "better") into that which is 'best' ...doesn't it? Investigate it, and see, if you agree: a vegan world, is a climate of profound joy. Joy, bless us ...Joy bless us, everyone.

-- Direct Action Everywhere -Representatives for Direct Action Everywhere delivered an impromptu introduction, of their vocation, at an ABQ Veg meeting (a monthly potluck-dinner; on Saturday December 6th 2015, at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice). Their well-versed intentions, were inspiring; and, their pledge-request, was compelling. The audience listened, attentively, to their message; and, there was some lively discussion. DXE is a wonderful group; they are working diligently to spread the animal-rights message, on behalf of animal-freedom. You can take their pledge, and/or find more information, at the following link: http://directactioneverywhere.com/take-action/
