Starry, starry nights …and bright blue days with triple-digit weather temperatures, are ‘riding the wind’ here in Albuquerque. And veganism, too, is surfing around in the desert air …having its share in the sunny fun. The earth-globe community, seems to be moving into the “next phase of covid” (post-covid, hopefully) & I am happy for the momentum with which veganism is being expanded, around the world. “Increase that momentum” …that is the smart thing to do -to ensure the longevity of our species. So, go ahead …increase it …make it a happy hobby, to be a vegan advocate. Our planet is in jeopardy …the animals are in jeopardy …humans are in jeopardy ……………if we despair. Don’t let people wallow in despair. Tell them what you see. I believe… vegans see us, Earthlings, poised in a great dramatic moment …which is leading us to something …positively positive. Meanwhile, restaurants are ‘opening up’ and many work-places are being ‘returned to.’ Gatherings with family and friends are ‘a thing’ again. Interstate\international travel (‘eek?’) ..is increasing. As these things happen, don’t expect to go back to pre-covid practices. Some …changes… are necessary …for creating a wiser-prevention plan. So, be prepared for more reasons to …be patient. The solution to the big problems we face, today, is …veganism. Planet Earth, recently, was visited by an officer of the “wake-up police.” That officer’s name is “CoViD-19.” And let us not forget; …there is a large battalion of those officers, available to us, if we should need them. But fear not. “Veganism” will keep our planet off their “to do” list. Before closing, here, may I caution us: do not celebrate the “end” of The Corona Virus Pandemic …prematurely. Let us not get lazy with our Corona Virus Discipline …many protocols are still being mandated. Here are some serious facts to consider: being fully “vaccinated for CoViD 19” does not guarantee immunity from the disease (because only “true vaccines” provide immunity; …and the CoViD 19 Vaccine is mis-named, for, it is, officially, not a vaccine); elderly individuals and people with health issues, are still, very much …at risk. Yet, I remain positively positive, about our positive outcome. We Earthlings are poised, for a turn of fate, which is destined to be an epic. (Epic: a poem, of great stature, as it narrates the deeds and adventures of heroic or legendary figures… and their achievements.).

Livegan …ye legends, Nancy

Plant Based, Harmful or Helpful to Veganism? Jay Ziebart, Plant Based for Life When I began my journey almost 9 years ago, I was just trying to save my own life. An undoubtably selfish aim, but one that has led me to my purpose and passion - to reduce suffering. It has been an incredible journey of discovery, unlearning, and learning anew. Not without challenge, I have reaped unimaginable rewards including a beautiful peace within my own body as well as with the world around me. I had no idea what I was getting into when I began, but I knew I wanted to continue to live so I dove deep into the science, ignoring all the swirling, buzzing opinions around every corner. Closing in on a decade later, half a person lighter, stroke level blood pressure now in a safe range, medication-free, happier, and more energetic, I am free to enjoy the rest of my life instead of just enduring it. I love my career and am incredibly grateful that I get to live my passion. I have been witness to, and participated in, so many people’s health transformations. Health that they thought they had lost forever. Some of those people, including me and my husband, have also become warriors for the animals as well. The question I pose to you today: Is a plant-based nutritionist a good advocate for veganism? I would be shocked if anyone reading this article does not have someone in their lives with a ‘lifestyle disease.’ Who comes to mind for you? The nationwide number one cause of death in our loved ones, neighbors, and friends in the United States is heart disease. According to the CDC’s provisional 2020 death statistics, significantly more than a virus that kept us locked down for over a year. The virus is serious and should not be taken lightly, but if more folks are dying, not to mention suffering while they are alive, with a terrible disease that we know how to prevent, why are we not doing more about it? It is not a requirement that you eat healthy to be vegan, but plant-based eating is tied to the message of veganism through food, and that is not a bad thing. As a speaker and nutritionist, I regularly explain that a plant-based person can be vegan or not. There is so much more to it than just food, but the amazing thing I have witnessed over and again, is that the more people feel at peace with their health and connected with their food, the more their perspective widens to encompass healthful improvements in other areas of their lives, including their relationships with nonhuman animals and the world around them. On my own professional journey, I have fully embraced the differences between individuals. Each of us has our own personality, strengths, and challenges. Trying to address this with a one-size-fits-all approach is not the best strategy for success. Adapting to each person’s specific past, path, and perspective, you empower that person. It should not be about anyone else telling that person what they should do. Providing evidence-based information in a customized way for your audience allows them to take that as far as they would like to go. Do you like to be told what to do? Autonomy is essential. If we want to continue to be effective advocates, we can also provide support to help keep them on the path that they have chosen.

NM Vegan | 07

Plant Based, Harmful or Helpful to Veganism? – Cont’d Jay Ziebart, Plant Based for Life Some worry that the plant-based diet movement might water down the vegan message, but many paths can lead to the same destination. Every time a person chooses a plant-based option, that is a cascading reduction in suffering – theirs, the animals’ and the world’s. Advocates with different approaches appeal to people with differing sensibilities. A gentler approach works better for some. Some folks need to see the horror up close to believe it. Others have better imaginations or a lower tolerance for any kind of cruelty. There are a lot of hard-liners out there and that type of advocacy attracts and holds the attention of a certain type of person. All are needed. What we need to do as vegan advocates is to stop bickering amongst ourselves, especially in public forums. How is that helping anyone? We also need to stop the one-upping. Are you a better vegan than I? I am thrilled for you and very happy for the beings that you are saving, but it does not negate everyone else’s strides. Perfection is an extremely low bar because it is not achievable. Do not let the pursuit of perfection derail excellent intentions. “[B]est is the enemy of good.” ~Voltaire Why do we go vegan? To protect the animals, the environment, and sometimes our health. Often people start for health reasons but end up reducing the suffering of animals and contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable world and this is something to be applauded! We are all going in the same direction, maybe for different reasons, but the end result is the same – helping and supporting each other along the way, instead of criticizing differing paths, will truly make the world a better place. My objective is not to convert people to veganism, but I am incredibly happy when that happens. My passion is to reduce suffering. Yours, mine, and theirs.

Reversing Our Climate Crisis Dan Brook Like an overheated car, an overcooked dinner, or a person with a fever, we are overheating our precious planet to dangerous levels. And the number 1 cause of weather-related death worldwide is heat. New Zealand declared a climate emergency — joining dozens of other jurisdictions — with its popular Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern calling climate change “one of the greatest challenges of our time”, adding that we must “act with urgency”. We need to do so, as well. Our rapid industrialization of production, power generation, agriculture, and livestock, especially since the Industrial Revolution, are associated with the overproduction of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide — the three major greenhouse gases. These gases in our atmosphere trap more heat from the sun, raising average temperatures. The oceans are absorbing more carbon dioxide, thereby acidifying them. This is affecting all countries and all species, including us, creating a climate emergency. Although it took hundreds of millions of years to form dirty and dangerous fossil fuels, we are burning through them. Despite our knowledge of safe and clean alternatives — especially solar, wind, hydro, wave, tidal, geothermal, hydrogen, algae — we continue to over-rely on fossil fuels, notably oil, coal, and gas. That makes us fossil fools. Climatologists assert that 350 parts per million (ppm) of atmospheric CO2 is a threshold level of carbon dioxide, which was below 285 ppm for thousands of years, yet it surpassed 418 ppm on June 1, 2020, the highest level in three million years. That same month, the Arctic soared to over 100º Fahrenheit (38ºC) for the first time in recorded history. Houston has been ravaged by five “500-year storms” in the last five years. In 2020, wildfires ravaged the western US, massive storms hit the Koreas, the Philippines, and the Gulf Coast. None of this is normal, but it might be our “new abnormal”. A rainforest takes thousands of years to develop its rich biodiversity, yet we are destroying these life-giving forests with alarming rapidity, greed, and arrogance. Deforestation means that the forests can no longer absorb carbon dioxide, emit oxygen, filter water, provide homes for people, fauna, and flora, produce food and medicine, be available for exploration or recreation, or display their beauty. Over 80% of the burned Amazon Rainforest is later used for grazing cattle.

Reversing Our Climate Crisis – Cont’d Dan Brook Although we can thrive on plant-based diets, we have substantially increased the amount of meat and dairy we consume and therefore the number of animals we cruelly herd, imprison, torture, and slaughter. The production of meat is extraordinarily wasteful in terms of energy, water, chemicals, land, calories, and lives, while emitting huge amounts of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ammonia, and other ecologically-disruptive gases. We can quickly and easily reduce our carbon hoofprint and methane mouthprint by eschewing, not chewing, animals, which would help reverse our climate crisis. These and other phenomena are creating our experience with climate change, which every reputable scientific, environmental, and educational institution in the world agrees is real, serious, worsening, and anthropogenic (human-caused despite whatever natural variations may occur). New studies reveal that climate change is even affecting Earth’s magnetic poles and tipping Earth off its axis. Crises brought about by climate change, or global warming — higher temperatures overall though lower in some regions, melting icecaps, shrinking glaciers, shifting weather patterns, increasing drought, increasing severity of storms, rising sea levels, changes in rainfall, shrinking freshwater supplies, increased ocean acidity, more and bigger wildfires, the spread of diseases, increased crop failures, altered coastlines, submerged islands, species extinctions, climate refugees — cause social disruption in all countries and will increasingly do so. And this is most true for the most vulnerable. The environmental costs are devastating. The economic costs are enormous. Political costs are uncertain and shifting. Social costs are incalculable and inevitable. Climate scientist Michael Mann reminds us that “The solution is already here. We just need to deploy it rapidly and at a massive scale. It all comes down to political will and economic incentives.” The sooner we act, the lower the procrastination penalty, which will get increasingly expensive in terms of money, property, habitats, and lives. How can we take effective action? We can conserve precious resources, consume less crap, recycle and compost more waste, reduce or eliminate meat and dairy, switch from fossil fuels to renewable energies, and support politicians who respect science. It is already tragically too late for some species, some people, some cities, and some islands. Now is the time for bold action on all levels, from the personal to the planetary. Let’s act decisively before it’s too late for the rest of us. This article is a reprint (with permission) from the published article, Reversing Our Climate Crisis by Dan Brook | VISIBLE Magazine

Animals can feel empathy just like humans do. Empathy for each other, for us, and even for other species.

Tigers 1. Tigers are the largest cat species in the world reaching up to 11 feet in length and weighing up to 670 pounds. 2. Tigers unlike most other cats, tigers are great swimmers and like the water. 3. Tiger cubs are born blind and only open their eyes 1-2 weeks after birth. 4. Tiger cubs stay with their moms until they are about 18 months old. 5. Tigers communicate using scent markings, visual signals and lots of sounds like roars, growls, snarls, grunts, moans, mews and hisses. 6. A group of Tigers are called an ambush or streak. 7. Tigers can sprint at over 37 miles/hour. 8. Tiger stripes are also found on their skin. 9. Tigers rarely roar and are humble towards their group. 10. Tigers can imitate the call of other animals. 11. Tigers can easily jump over 20 feet in length. 12. Tigers mark their territories with urine, or by scratching trees and are very protective of their territory. 13. Each tiger's stripes are unique to the animal. 14. The first tigers appeared 2 million years ago. 15. One thing singers and tigers have in common is the need to vocalize. Tigers vocalize to improve their roar. 16. Tigers have strong, powerful paws with claws that could grow up to about 5 inches long. Next to their strong teeth, tiger claws serve as their main defense mechanisms. 17. Tigers have night vision. Their eyes have a specialized structure which lets them see 6 times better than a normal human. 18. Each tiger has a unique scent. 19. Tigers cannot enjoy sweet treats. All cat species have taste buds like us. However, their taste buds cannot recognize sweetness. 20. Tiger roars are powerful and can travel long distances; they can be heard as far as two miles away!

Firstly… I will say, “Congratulations!” Second, third, and fourthly… Mother Earth appreciates you …animals appreciate you... and your own body\mind will appreciate you …for living the vegan lifestyle. Perhaps, this very morning, you were enchantingly awakened, by an auspicious sunrise, and now, you… are newly vegan. Consequently, you are wondering what new vegan wonders you can perform, with the rest of your day. In the following paragraphs, I will offer some suggestions to help… ease… your transition into veganism. Do I seem to hint that …maybe, it will not be easy to do? I do not mean to doubt you. It’s just that… well… you see… I was groomed for my vegan vocation, by the School Of Hard Knocks. My first attempt at a vegan transition …failed. (That story… another time). It may be your destiny to sail on a magic carpet, that gently lands you on the sands of success. But, for those on the hard bumpy road, let me say, “Though veganism is more than just a diet… the diet aspect… is, itself, a… hurdle.”

Let’s begin with an introduction… to some of the vegan food-products available, on the commercial market. Myself, I started by …replacing some everyday items like mayonnaise, butter, bread, cheese, and milk; …with vegan brands. This was my first move; because I was in love, already, with rice and beans, which are vegan …naturally. Soon after, I began “veganizing” traditional popular basics, as: chicken fried rice; lasagna with Italian-sausage; cold-cut sandwiches; burgers; pepperoni pizza; meat-balls\meat-loaf; holiday roasts; huevos rancheros; and on and on; until …wow …I discovered an amazing reality. If I am the first to tell you this, then …here it comes: vegans can eat any food\recipe in the whole wide world. How? Because: (A) animals are not food …the concept of “animals as food” is a facsimile… the GENUINE thing is plants for food… the COPY is animals for food. Do not get attached to the “copy” …the copy is false\mis-leading\harmful; (B) any recipe… from pork-pie to tiramisu… can be prepared with plants only… (this is why chefs can turn beans into cheeses\burgers); (C) when eating plants -plants only- in the correct manner …you will not sacrifice; you will gain …let me be clear… you may “give-up” an artificial-appetite, but your food-experience will become that of “ultimate satisfaction” …even better… than ‘before.’ As I mentioned earlier, “Veganism is more than a diet.” When I was a new vegan, I could not fill my pantry with dependable food-products, until I sampled across the entire “rainbow” of options. Through trial and more trial; finally, I found the items, I was looking for …to satisfy my taste. Since everyone’s taste is different, I suggest you try and try again, until you find the products that suit you. Or you may come to one of my Cooking With Compassion cooking classes [Natural Grocers, Vitamin Cottage - Wyoming & Montgomery] (admission is free). I am available, immediately after each class, to direct your questions. Also, I can walk you through the store, …pointing out stuff, directly, …right there on the shelf. Some vegan butter choices are …Earth Balance, Miyoko’s, Kite Hill, …and one of my personal favorites, Country Crock plant-based butter. For mayonnaise, I use …Follow Your Heart, Vegenaise, Earth Balance, Hellman’s Vegan Mayo, and another of my favorites …Sir Kensington’s Vegan Mayo.

Now let's talk about milk. There are many varieties available. And me, I’m a big milk drinker, since way-back; so, I wanted to sample every kind of alternative milk I could get my hands on. There is milk from: almond, flax, soy, oat, cashew, pea, coconut, quinoa, hazelnut, sunflower, hemp, peanut, wheat, multi-grain, and more. There are a plethora of brands, also, that offer plant-based milks such as: Ripple, Silk, Milkadamia, Oatly, Pacific, Good Karma, Califia Farms, etc. If you peeked into my fridge, today, you would find Silk brand: Organic Soy (unsweet); and their Original Oat. There is condensed milk, cream, yogurt, ice cream, and so on. I do cook with milk. I prefer: Almond milk when baking; oat milk for creamy mashed potatoes; and soy milk in my coffee. Commercial cheeses are diverse too: spreadable, sliced, blocks, crumbled, shredded, finely grated parmesan, smoked, peppered, bleu, feta, etc. I use: Go Veggie, Follow Your Heart, Field Roast, Miyoko’s, Daiya, Kite Hill, and Violife, to name a few …depending on what I’m cooking. Earlier, in this article, I stated that, “Veganism is more than a diet,” and it certainly is. Veganism is wisdom. Wisdom is …proper-prosperity. Prosperity is created through …non-violence …as in… “Attention humanity, you have two options: you can kill each other and become extinct; or you can “let live” …and seek for that basic contentment that is the very omni-bliss of Nature.” That bliss… is veganism. That bliss is …proper prosperity. Non-violence towards animals, extends beyond: letting them live. Animals should live; and live well… this ideal simply reflects a successfully …creative & self-maintaining… beauty, …from the infinite power of Nature. Happiness is the purest beauty. Vegans do not support the killing of elephants and the robbing of their ivory tusks… so, vegans do not purchase ivory treasures -n- trinkets. If the killer profits from killing; then, the killer is elected as “Judge” …and every dollar spent in that direction, is a vote that elected them. The material bodies of animals, these days, are in the manufacturing-recipe for retail-items …that surround human contact… from food to shampoo …armchairs to zippers. Some products contain no animal parts; but somehow, the animals lost their homes when their natural habitat was destroyed, by the company manufacturing the product. Do your own contemplation and research …see how deeply, subtly, and pervasively the blood of animals has seeped …into the world’s human-driven cultures. Do you want toxic chemicals, in your household’s cleansers? Do you want to use make-up that was aggressively-tested on an innocent bunny? Do you want to put damaging lotions and makeup on your own face and body? Get to know the labels on the outside of the store’s products. You will find obvious references (or not) to veganism, that will ensure that you are harming, neither: yourself, the planet, nor the animals. You might be thinking, “This is overwhelming.” Certainly, the transition to veganism could appear difficult at first. But I know from personal experience …it is not difficult to do …though it might prove difficult to understand what to do! We humans don’t like change, when it involves self-sacrifice. Winning the lottery …that seems like a big change that no one will complain about. We like to get comfortable and stay there. Herein lies the betrayal, of our own …innocent ignorance… we fail, innocently, because we don’t know yet, and our comfort zone …holds us close. The truth is, you only need good basic information. Embrace the changes that make you a vegan. You NM Vegan | 33

will come to find that your decision to become vegan is one of the best you can make. I say this because, in my outreach endeavors, one of the most common comments I hear goes something like this, “I wish I had become vegan …sooner.” Food issues aside, for a moment, let me encourage you to find a vegan community. Connect with other like-minded individuals who are on the vegan trail, with you. And, yes, virtual connections, are still connections, if that is what it must be. I believe in supportive communities. Others’ journeys, …your journeys… can be mutually inspiring. We all want a vegan world, and we want you to succeed. Obviously, I did not convey all of veganism, in this short article.
