Forty years ago, the Bald Eagle, our national symbol, was in danger of extinction throughout most of its range. Habitat destruction and degradation, illegal shooting, and the contamination of its food source – due to use of the pesticide DDT – decimated the Eagle population. Habitat protection afforded by the Endangered Species Act, the federal government’s banning of DDT, and conservation actions taken by the American public helped Bald Eagles make a remarkable recovery. Bald Eagles no longer need Endangered Species Act protection because their population is protected, healthy, and growing.

Tornado Spares Family Home, But Destroys Barn The Klepinger farm in Laura was in the path of the Memorial Day tornadoes. Josh, Jessica, Josie, and Jed were blessed not to have sustained major damage to their home, but their barn – with all the animals in it – was destroyed. Amazingly, only a few animals perished. Josie is shown consoling Ruby, the family’s miniature horse, surrounded by some of the rubble. This touching photo was submitted by Grandma Karyl Woolery of Greenville, who wrote, “Our prayers go out to all that were affected by these storms.”
