©©© sPellinG Bee & hisTory Bee Fort Rowdy will host a Good Old Fashioned Spelling Bee and an Ohio Pioneer History Bee on Saturday, Sept. 4, from 4-5 p.m. The Old Fashioned Spelling Bee divisions will be children going into grades 3-6, grades 7-12, and adult (anyone 18 or over). This is a notto-be-missed event! Kids love the Spelling Bees, which encourage fortitude, grit, and confidence in those who participate. The Spelling Bee will include chalkboards, chalk, washcloth erasers, and a variety of words especially chosen for those specific age groups. Ms. Roeth, Covington’s J.R. Clarke Library’s Director, will lead and encourage all participants to “spell out-loud, so others can hear you!” We will also be using those new-fangled microphones to help everyone in the crowd hearken to our superb spellers. Winners in all categories will receive the new Fort Rowdy medallion especially crafted for this Labor Day weekend. Word sheets used for each age division may be picked up at the J.R. Clarke Public Library Alternative Site, 101 N. High St. Fort Rowdy will also be holding an Ohio Pioneer History Bee! Questions for the History Bee will be from histories of Miami/Darke Counties and the Village of Covington and the surrounding area. There will be two divisions: Children going into grades 7-12 and adults (ages 18 and over). If you are interested, please see the local history books in the J.R. Clarke Alcove or refer to the websites listed below. In order to narrow down the time period, most questions are from 1800’s through the Great Depression. Winners will also receive a 2021 Fort Rowdy medallion.

The 29th Annual
FORT ROWDY GATHERING SEPTEMBER 4 - 5 - 6 ••• OPEning CEREMOniES SET fOR SEPTEMBER 4 •••
fort Rowdy gathering will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, on the main stage in the Covington Community Park. following the flag raising, the Covington Marching Band will play the national Anthem and god Bless America. The festival committee would like to welcome all state and local dignitaries, the 2021 grand Marshal – Mike Busse, and the public to the 29th gathering.
DOG ORDINANCE Due to City Ordinance, dogs are not permitted in the Covington Park during the Gathering. Service dogs, of course, are allowed.
Welcome to the 2021 Fort Rowdy Gathering! Another year has rolled around and it’s time for the Fort Rowdy Gathering. This past year has been trying on us all with the uncertainty of the pandemic, causing the cancellation of the 2020 Gathering. However, the Fort Rowdy Gathering is back in 2021 for its 29th year as we return to a somewhat normal life. With our Gathering being one of the few events able to go on since the lifting of COVID related-restrictions, we as a committee are looking forward to seeing everyone wanting to get out of the house. The Gathering will be held Saturday, Sept. 4, thru Monday, Sept. 6, at the Covington Community Park. The Gathering is FREE and offers shuttle bus service from Covington High School to the park every ½ hour. The shuttle is handicapped accessible. When arriving at the park you will enter the present-day side, where you can enjoy arts and crafts, entertainment, lots of good food, and things for the children to enjoy. Also joining us this year is Annie the Highway Cow and her friends (we never know which friends she’ll decide to bring along). They will also be bringing their merchandise with them. Cross the 208 foot portable bridge that spans the Stillwater River, entering into the bygone years of the late 1700’s. In this encampment visitors will find campers living as they did in that era, and enjoy the aroma of campfires and food being prepared over open fires. Visitors can watch campers participate in games of the same era. I would like to thank all of the board members, campers, family, and volunteers for all their hard work to make this event a success. Come and enjoy seeing old friends and making new friends and wonderful memories. Don Clark Jr., Chairman

Mike Busse Named Fort Rowdy Gathering Grand Marshal The Fort Rowdy Gathering is pleased to announce the 2021 Grand Marshal is Mike Busse. Mike and his wife of 37 years, Becky, currently reside in Russia. They have two children, Michael and Allysia, and six grandchildren. He moved to the Covington area in 2005. Many people who have been to the Gathering in recent years have seen Mike hard at work, supporting Covington’s annual festival. It was not unusual to see him in the park, patrolling in his duties as an auxiliary police officer, then later in the day he could be seen helping keep the park clean so visitors to the Gathering could have a more enjoyable time. As the Covington Village Administrator, Mike was always “Home Town Proud.” He is currently the Village Administrator for Versailles. Mike grew up in the Fort Loramie area and graduated from Ft. Loramie High School. He graduated from the Shelby County Police Academy in 1987, and worked in the police field for 34 years, working in Minster, Ft. Loramie, Russia, and Covington. He has had continuing education courses in police work, as well as having a Class 2 Certification in Waste Water Management. His strong sense of community led him to be a Voluntary Fireman for Fort Loramie and Russia. He has also been an Assistant Troop Leader for both Boy and Cub Scouts. He enjoys helping the Fort Rowdy Gathering and is looking forward to this year’s festival. Mike has always liked the sense of community and involvement found in a small town “where you get to know your neighbor.” He added, “Working in local government allows you to get to know everyone.” He is a strong believer in community service and enjoys meeting new people and helping others. His personal motto is “Do your best, no matter at what you are working.” His advice to future generations is, “Always maintain a sense of community and help your neighbor. We haven’t lost that. That’s why I like small towns.” The Fort Rowdy Gathering Board would like to thank Mike Busse for all the support he has given Fort Rowdy over the years.
