Coffee, water, and lemonade will also be provided. “Donations only” will be accepted to benefit both the Knights of St. John Commandery #300 as well as several local charities throughout the year. CYO Basketball, Community Blood Drives, and St. Vincent de Paul are a just a few of the civic and church functions supported by the Knights of St. John.
The Humane Society of the United States opposes declawing cats except in rare cases when it is necessary for medical purposes, such as the removal of cancerous tumors from cats’ nail beds. The HSUS advises that it’s perfectly natural for cats to scratch, which they typically begin doing as eight-week-old kittens, and that declawing may contribute to problems that are more serious than shredded furniture. Rather than planning to declaw their cats, pet parents can begin training kittens to use scratching posts and trim their nails when cats begin scratching. The HSUS notes that declawing can produce some very negative side effects for cats, including pain in the paw, infection, lameness, and back pain. When cats’ claws are removed, this can change the way their feet meet the ground, resulting in the same painful feelings that human beings may feel when wearing uncomfortable footwear. In addition, improperly removed claws may begin to grow back. Declawing also may contribute to nerve damage and result in the formation of potentially painful bone spurs. The HSUS also notes that some newly declawed cats begin to bite as a defense mechanism, putting themselves and anyone they encounter in danger.

The life-sustaining cycle of giving and receiving blood is well known in the Kremer family of North Star. A legacy of hemophilia across three generations has been a challenge and an inspiration. It gave Debora Kremer Smith a particular sense of pride when she made her milestone 100th lifetime blood donation January 9 at the Greater Greenville Ministerial Association blood drive. Debora’s parents, Carl and Carolyn Kremer, raised a family of four on their dairy farm in North Star. Debora’s brothers, Dan and Kevin, are both hemophiliacs. A generation later, Debora’s sons, Paul and Dean, ages 18 and 14, are hemophiliacs, as well. Dan and Kevin grew up in a time when the clotting disorder was not well understood and treatments were still developing. It meant many journeys to Dayton in the dark of night for emergency care during bleeding incidents. But it was also an opportunity for the community to learn about hemophilia and respond to the family by supporting blood drives. At age 80, Carolyn has 118 lifetime donations and wants to keep donating. Debora followed her mom’s example as a donor, and became a nurse. “I went to the Miami Valley School of Nursing, and those three years in school I was very consistent donating,” said Debora. She worked at Mercer Hospital in Coldwater and gave birth to her daughter Carla. The challenge of raising two hemophiliac sons gave her a better understanding of what her mother faced. “It was much easier than for my mother, but you still fear the big injury,” said Debora. “Boys are boys.” Paul and Dean were able to play CYO basketball and fell in love with swimming, with coaching from their dad. It’s sobering to know that the Kremer family can never completely ignore the heritage of hemophilia. The disorder is a recessive trait passed on through the females. Dan’s daughter recently gave birth to a son, and he is a hemophiliac. A generational change in the treatment is the wide use of factor concentrates that don’t have to come from human plasma donations. “My boys’ treatment has been a protein that is artificial,” said Debora. “They don’t have to have the protein from plasma anymore. My brothers would have blood donated for them.” Learn more at www.GivingBlood.org.

The Ohio Dept. of Agriculture (ODA) urges Ohio farmers and producers who have not yet done so to respond to the United States Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) Census of Agriculture. Responses are accepted in the mail and online through February 5. “The data collected from the Census of Agriculture is critically important as decision makers at all levels work to help agriculture grow in our state and country,” said ODA Director David T. Daniels. “Census data impacts nearly every Ohio farmer or producer through a variety of conservation and support programs. The census is important and I hope everyone involved in Ohio’s food and agriculture industry does their part.” Census data is used to support rural infrastructure; farm service agency loan programs; natural resources conservation services programs; and rural development funds. USDA has improved the online form making responding easier and more convenient than ever. Additionally, federal law requires that all responses are secure and confidential. “The census is the only source of comprehensive and impartial agricultural data for not only every county in Ohio, but every county in the nation,” said Daniels. “I understand some people might have pause sharing the information asked for, but please know the responses to the questions asked are confidential and the aggregated information is critical to shaping the future of agriculture for the next decade.” Taken every five years, the Census of Agriculture is a complete count of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. Even the smallest plots of land with vegetables, fruit, livestock, equine or food animals are included. To respond, visit agcensus.usda.gov or mail in your questionnaire. Questions about the census should be directed to USDA at 866-2948560.
