How To Control Common Spring Pests Just when winter thaws out and people are anxious to enjoy the blooming flowers and luscious lawns of spring, pesky pests can appear and impact comfort levels and safety. Many pests resume their levels of activity as spring draws closer and temperatures warm up. The presence of these insects and rodents may cause problems in and around a home, which makes it essential to recognize them and avoid issues. The following are some of the more common spring pests and how to remedy infestations.

Pavement ants Pavement ants are some of the most common pests residents encounter inside and outside of their homes. These ants are light brown to black with appendages that are lighter than the rest of their bodies. Small in stature, pavement ants have parallel lines on their heads and

thorax, according to pest extermination company Orkin. Although pavement ants nest outdoors, they can enter homes through small crevices in search of food scraps. Their large colonies may not disappear until treatment is introduced. Keep foods in tightly sealed containers, clear counters and floors of crumbs, and address water sources, such as leaks. Pesticides may be needed in extreme conditions. Fleas Fleas are tiny, jumping, biting pests that must find a host upon which to live. As ectoparasites, they feed on blood while living on the body of living hosts. Pets can bring fleas inside the yard and home in warm weather. According to the University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program, flea larvae develop more quickly at higher temperatures. At normal room temperatures, the entire life cycle of a flea is about 18 days. Several flea control products are available to control fleas on cats and dogs. There also may be powders and sprays to alleviate flea infestations in the home. Vacuuming is also very effective in killing larvae in the carpet and at picking up adults.

The sixth annual Artisan Showcase in New Bremen will take place Saturday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The showcase will highlight artisans who create unique pieces of art such as jewelry, paintings, wood carvings, reclaimed furniture, and more. The Artisan Showcase is an event highlighted at the annual New Bremen Pumpkinfest. The Artisan Showcase is currently looking for interested artists. Spaces are limited, so contact the Artisan Showcase today to fill out an application and reserve a booth. Booths are $65 for a 10 x 10 space before March 15. Deadline for applications is August 1. Send in the application before March 15 to save $10 on booth rental. Taking place at the Crown Pavilion along the banks of the Miami and Erie Canal in New Bremen, Pumpkinfest is a family-friendly event that features activities that will delight all visitors with live entertainment, beverages, and plenty of food. The New Bremen Pumpkinfest is known nationwide. In 2010, organizers baked a 20-foot in diameter pumpkin pie that is featured in the Guinness Book of World Records. Patron Saints and How They’re Chosen
Amateur and professional athletics are both big business. According to Forbes, the Southeastern Conference, a collective of universities that includes the University of Alabama and the University of Georgia, generated $375 million in television money alone in 2015, collecting another $140 million from football and basketball postseason play. While that’s a hefty chunk of change, and even more impressive when considering the SEC is just one of many conferences in college athletics, it pales considerably in comparison to the National Football League, which Forbes projected would surpass $13.3 billion in total revenues in 2016. Such figures highlight the popularity of both amateur and professional sports. Hundreds of millions of people across the globe enjoy sports, and many are fond of gathering with fellow fans to watch their favorite teams play, whether in-person or on television. Viewing parties are a great way to watch the big game with fellow fans, and such gatherings don’t have to require all that much effort on the part of hosts. • Make it a potluck affair. Potluck affairs make perfect sense for sports viewing parties, so don’t be surprised if guests offer to whip up some homemade guacamole or a buffet-style dish for the big party. Encourage this, asking guests to share what they’re bringing with other invitees so there are no duplicate offerings. • Vary the food and beverage menu. Chicken wings and beer might seem like go-to foods and beverages for the big game, but even sports bars are increasingly recognizing sports fans’ desire for healthy foods. It’s still acceptable to serve staples like wings, nachos, chips, and pretzels, but try to provide some healthy fare like celery and salad as well. Even whole-grain pretzels might be more enticing to guests watching what they eat. In addition, provide alternatives to alcohol, such as water, soda and juice, for guests who are abstaining. • Upgrade your television. Projection screens are go-to options for many avid sports fans, But projectors and screens may stretch some sports fans’ budgets. A 4K ultra-HD television can be an affordable option depending on the size of the television, and such devices provide incredibly crisp pictures that can make sports fans feel as though they’re inside the stadium cheering on their favorite players. • Purchase a sound system. Today’s televisions are sleek and thin. While that saves space and provides more aesthetic appeal than the bulky televisions of yesteryear, thin designs leave little room for sound tech. As a result, it can be hard to hear what’s going on in the game without a sound system. Sound systems are relatively inexpensive; just make sure to purchase one that is compatible with your television. Sports viewing parties tend to be easygoing affairs that don’t require the level of planning of more formal gatherings.

Because of his work, St. Patrick is known as the “Apostle of Ireland,” as well as being the primary patron saint of Ireland alongside saints Brigit of Kildare and Columba. Upon hearing St. Patrick referred to as the “patron saint” of Ireland, many may wonder just what a patron saint is and how saints become patrons of particular places, professions, etc. From the earliest days of the Catholic Church, groups of the faithful have chosen particularly holy deceased people to intercede with God on their behalf. Although individuals can still pray directly to God, praying to a patron saint as well is like asking a friend to speak on your behalf. According to About: Religion, the practice of adopting patron saints dates back to the building of the first public churches in the Roman Empire, most of which were built over the graves of martyrs. The churches were then given the name of the martyr, and the martyr was expected to act as an intercessor for the Christians who worshiped there. Churches are largely dedicated to a patron. For example, St. Peter is the patron saint of St. Peter’s Church. Patron saints are not only advocates for churches, but also they can be the heavenly protector of a nation, profession, class, clan, occupation, family, or even a person. In addition to Roman Catholicism, patron saints also may be recognized in Eastern Catholicism, Eastern Orthodoxy, Lutheranism, and Anglicanism.
