Smart Tips For Holiday Dining Out The holidays do not end when the weather begins to get warmer. Plenty of special occasions, including Passover, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Communion celebrations, and graduations, occur in spring and summer. Many families celebrate these special occasions by dining out at restaurants or using the services of a catering hall. During busy entertaining days, knowing a few things about planning events can help the occasion move along smoothly. Book early Start shopping around for restaurants as soon as possible. Reservations quickly fill up after special occasions like graduations, but the early bird gets the table. Space may be limited for large parties, so planning several weeks or even months in advance is wise. Ask about special menus The regular house menu may not be available for special events and holidays. Some establishments offer an abbreviated menu with just a few offerings to make it easy for kitchen staff to prepare in bulk. Restaurants that cater to large parties may require ordering from a family-style or party menu so they will know in advance what the guests will be dining on and can prepare accordingly. Although these options may limit options, they can make it easier for diners to determine the bill in advance. Expect some crowds On popular days to dine out, such as holidays, crowds tend to be large and wait times lengthy. Patience is necessary because the staff is doing their best to accommodate patrons. To fit more diners, restaurants may push tables closer together or add chairs to increase place settings. If you have any concerns, such as fitting a wheelchair or a baby’s highchair, bring it up when making the reservation. Pay attention to gratuity When servicing parties of six or more, dining establishments tend to include a gratuity on the bill. Restaurants may need to hire extra staff for busy days or regular staff may work extra hard on holidays. Therefore, automatic gratuities help ensure these workers will be justly compensated. Diners can always increase built-in gratuities for servers who go above and beyond. Linger within reason Large parties take up valuable space, and restaurants benefit from high table turnover rates. If the reservation is for a set amount of time (a three-hour dinner, for example), do not linger for longer than that amount of time unless you are willing to pay more. Also, on busy holidays, be courteous and dine efficiently so other patrons can enjoy the day as well. Ensure children are well-rested Cranky kids may be no big deal when dining out on a random Tuesday, but during busy service days or parties they can be disruptive. Naps, snacks and activities to keep young children occupied can make for happier diners all around. Dining out on special occasions can be enjoyable when you know what to expect and work closely with the establishment to ensure efficient service.

Easter Symbolism Complements the Holiday Tradition plays an important role in Easter celebrations for many families. Cherished traditions and symbols of Easter may include anything from egg hunts to lilies to lambs. Understanding the importance behind these symbols can make sharing the miracle of Easter that much more special. Eggs Eggs are one of the more recognizable symbols of Easter. For Easter egg hunts, eggs are hard-boiled and decorated in bright hues. It’s believed that the origins of Easter eggs are both secular and religious. From the secular (once pagan) perspective, the egg is an ancient symbol of new life, according to The History Channel, and has been associated with pagan festivals that celebrate spring. Some Christians feel that Easter eggs represent Christ’s emergence from the tomb and his subsequent resurrection. Eggs were once a food not consumed during Lent, therefore painting and decorating them to mark the end of fasting and penance became a way to celebrate Easter. Crucifix The crucifix is one of the central symbols of Easter and Christianity. The cross is a symbol of Christ’s crucifixion and sacrifice. The crucifix also highlights the ability of God to give new life to people after death. In addition to wearing and displaying the cross during Easter, some people bake “hot cross buns” as another symbol of the season. Rabbit The Easter bunny is very much a secular symbol of the holiday, but one that has become so ingrained with the season that many people ascribe to it a Christian meaning. Pagan celebrations of spring often linked rabbits or hares with the season because of their fertility and ability to bring forth new life. According to the Christian living resource Crosswalk, believers associate the rabbit coming out of its underground home as a symbol of Christ emerging from the tomb. Lilies Lilies are often exchanged during Easter celebrations or presented as hostess gifts for those sharing the holiday meal with others. The American Bible Society says lilies grow in the spring around the time when Easter is typically celebrated. Also, because they look like trumpets, they can be a symbol that heralds Christ’s resurrection. Lamb The lamb is another symbol associated with Easter. Lambs were originally associated with the Jewish holiday of Passover, when lambs were sacrificed and their blood was used to mark which houses contained those faithful to God. As a result of his crucifixion, Christ became the symbolic lamb for all — the ultimate sacrifice. In fact, Christ is often referred to as “The Lamb of God.” Easter is replete with many recognized symbols. Unearthing their meanings can be a learning experience and a way to further immerse oneself in this holy holiday.

As the final weeks of students’ high school careers whittle down, many milestone events dot the calendar. During this time, prom is the pinnacle celebration for many outgoing seniors. Prom, short for promenade — wherein guests parade around amid lavish fanfare — is an American tradition, but semi-formal dances and dinners for students are held throughout Canada and the United Kingdom as well. Even though modern proms are closely tied to high school, the tradition actually began for college students. The first recorded prom took place with the all-male student body at Amherst College, who in 1894 invited women from nearby Smith College to dance and dine. Teenagers pushed the prom tradition out of colleges and into high schools, and by the early 1940s, proms were exclusively tied to high schoolers. Proms have remained essentially unchanged for the last 60 to 70 years, with the exception that proms have become more grandiose over the years. Largely gone are the gymnasium-held dances, and now catering halls, hotels and other top-tier facilities typically host the festivities. Perhaps the grandest prom venue was the White House. In 1975, Susan Ford, daughter of President Gerald Ford, hosted her senior prom mere steps from the Oval Office, becoming the only First Child to do so. Promgoers and/or their parents spend sizable amounts of money on gowns, tuxedos, flowers, transportation, and much more to solidify their prom memories. Quite often prom nights turn into entire prom weekends or vacations, with after-parties and travel built into the tradition. Greater emphasis is now placed on the drama of the “promposal,” with certain individuals going to great lengths to orchestrate the ideal way to ask a date. And while at one point attending prom alone might never have happened, many students now relish the idea of attending as groups of friends to downplay the stress on prom couples. Thanks to social media and the connectivity of the internet, some enterprising high schoolers have attempted to make their prom experiences more memorable by asking their favorite celebrities to attend prom with them. Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Jason Derulo, Shaun White, and Miley Cyrus are all celebrities who have gone to prom with fans. Others like Selena Gomez have crashed proms. Even President John F. Kennedy crashed a prom at the Beverly Hilton Hotel when the students of John Burroughs High School had already booked the same room in which the President intended to have a fundraising dinner. JFK opted for a smaller room and let the kids have their fun, later popping in to say hello. Proms have been going strong since the late 1800s. Proms are fixtures of the spring and summer season and events that high school students look forward to as graduation nears.
